Following the days after a mysterious assault of Konoha's main gate many of the village Shinobi were given instructions to pay more attention on their patrols. Many specialist groups were under orders to investigate areas of interest and cautioned if such areas were found to be chakra sensitive. While fresher enlistees to the fold took joy in an opportunity to put their polished skills in tracking to good use there were some who were beginning to question if whether or not to prepare themselves for a much greater omen. In addition to several other squads, Gene is sent out as a specialist to run scout reports of the paths leading South; during the night and when curfew had set for the village he and two Chunin ventured beyond the gate and patrolled as intended.

"These patrols are about as thrilling as watching paint dry," Gene spoke calmly. Panning from right to left as he moved briskly through the tree invested region careful that his steps were true and mindful that his clothes would not snag on any branch while passing by. It was to his and the rest of the teams understanding that while the Samurai directly employed to the Daimyo were allies to the leaf and protectors of Fire country overall - they were not to be involved in this mission and the wandering Ronin were already treated with mild suspicion due to a question as to their true loyalties. On paper, this was a mission set up to go without an issue but both Chunin were aware that there was always a possibility that their lives could be thrust into the fires of hellish Combat...and they were ready.

Not above the sound of croaking toads were the sounds of steady footfalls but no more. In the likeness of a shadow with the deftness of a leaf the trio moved with a brisk and controlled sense of purpose. Travelers along the route were knocked unconscious or placed under moderate illusions that deceived their senses in order to make them distrust themselves, questioning reality from fiction. Others were avoided entirely via complex re-routes and travel higher above where branches permitted. A specialist in the methods of tracker techniques and jutsu, Gene paid special attention to areas where one might have attempted to cover over their tracks or altered the environment in some way. If there were foreigners lurking within the domains of Hi no Kuni's great forest along the route south of Konoha then they would not be able to hide for long.

"Walking around the forest instead of being at home with Cha-cha sucks big time but I understand the need. These forests can be full of unsavory types and I don't doubt that something funny would occur if they were allowed to get close enough to the village to do harm. " One of the Chunin responded and for the better part of twenty minutes while traveling the long stretch of land leading South, the group conversed about various subjects of interest. Every now and again the trio would stop, mark the location and document a list of things noticed along the journey and send that information back to the village by way of messenger bird and scroll paper - the latter being armed with unique fuinjutsu formulas to aid in the protection against intelligence leaks.

"Real quiet out here tonight," spoke the other Chunin. He'd been busy setting up trip wire traps along the perimeter five meters out from where the group had decided to make camp. Only when he'd been confident in the placement and functionality of his traps did the man who looked every bit of sixteen, return to the rest of the group where a warm fire and tents were waiting for him. Knowing only that the success of this mission would bring him one step closer to being able to request a promotion, he observed the surroundings with a watchful eye.

Meanwhile, Gene divided his attention between setting up a make shift Sensory station and planning where to put a triage in the event that the group should come under attack. At night when visibility was low and during an October winter, this task was made more arduous than it needed to be. "Pass me that screw, would you?" Gene sounded off, his tone a mix between the tranquil rivers of Fire country and the low rumble of a bear's first undertone. Working under the cover of night; camp had been set and now it was time to decide who would take the first night's shift watch.

To decide, the group drew straws and ironically enough, Gene had drew the shortest one. While the others settled in their tents for a nights rests and relaxation, Gene remained alert but tranquil; sitting near a burning flame listening to the occasional pop pop of crackling fire. Had one looked at him they would see no weapons (they were in his tent) and no visible village headband with which he could be labeled a Shinobi. Instead, they would see a young man tending to himself in silence under a starry night and quiet but active forest.

All the while, his mind's eye had been open and working diligently to sort through any sources of Chakra worth noting. While the event in and of itself remained a somber, solitary affair, specialist Gene had not bothered himself with thoughts of the future or memories of the past. Fixed only to time and space now in the present - he'd complete this task like any other.
