The Survivors

Post by Taiga » Sun May 01, 2022 12:03 am

Amidst the orange-red glow of a harvest moon, the shrill screams of horses and the sounds of striking metal filled the air. Occasionally whooping and hollering let loose. Taiga heaved as his feet slid in the mud and he attempted to hold the line, his hands sealed tightly together as the barrier wall he was projecting took a heavy hit. A massive explosion suddenly shook the earth as his barrier was shattered and the young Jounin was sent flying backward into the thicket with alarming speed. His body instinctively phased as he flew through the trees into the earth itself, only to emerge to a horrific scene. There was blood everywhere. His platoon impaled on the very trees and thicket that had provided their flank cover. Tears welled in his eyes as he rushed forward looking for any signs of life, finding his way to the young woman who was the sensor of the platoon. She was gasping for air a large branch right through her stomach.

"Don't mo-" he tried to call out as the girl grabbed his face. "Capt-" she whispered weakly as her eyes went blank, her bloodied hand sliding off of Taiga's face leaving blood in its track. Taiga looked off in horror. They were just kids. Barely Chuunin. Fighting in a foreign land...

Gasping for air Taiga woke up. His vision was blurred, but slowly came to, wiping the amassed sweat from his brow as he glanced over to the blood-red moon outside his window, then looked back to his hand. They were covered in blood. He blinked until finally his hands were clean, then left his bed to get a glass of water. These dreams- no, these memories had been haunting him. Haunting him ever since the war. FInishing the glass off he made his way back to the bed, where he sat looking out his window towards the training fields. He wouldn't get back to sleep any time soon.

Putting on some slacks and a standard issued black long-sleeve shinobi shirt, Taiga phased through the wall and lept down to the street. A stroll would hopefully tire him out.

[color=999]You humans are always too soft.[/color] Sukairaa said with a low grumble. Taiga nearly chuckled. You act tough, but I know you've taken care of me all these years not just for your own benefit, Su." Taiga said back, the Genma only responding with a rumbling hmph.

As he rounded the corner of the training ground, he'd begin to hear some noise and notice one loan figure training there, in the midst of the night.

While others his age slept soundly in their beds, every night Takeshi trained into the early hours of the morning. He had become accustomed to sleeping a few hours at a time throughout the day. It was easier this way, balancing his duties with ANBU and being able to train lightly during the day with his sister and other Genin, holding himself back for his real training within the ANBU conclave or on his own such as on this night. He and his twin sister Kaori had recently celebrated their 14th birthday, yet he was still a Genin, promising his sister he would take the Chunin exams alongside her. He knew she suspected he had long surpassed her, the truth was even most Chunin wouldn’t be a match for him now. But rank he held didn’t matter much to him, as a member of ROOT he was given special permissions to take on dangerous missions normally not assigned to Genin. He had even traveled to the Lightning Empire alone and fought a presumed Kiri shinobi there.

The near-death encounter served only to fuel his hatred for the enemy village. No matter the official status of the villages after the war, he wouldn’t forgive or forget what they had done. It was only a matter of time before they struck again and there was no place for excuses. He had to be the strongest version of himself, as quickly as possible. The young man wore his usual training outfit when not within the ANBU compound, a loose flowing teal pants and white robe with a teal obi. His dark hair was tied back into a ponytail and his forehead protector covered the curse mark across his forehead. Across his back was his bow and quiver and at the left side of his hip the Dao style 3ft long broadsword he had claimed only a few months ago.

Takeshi’s body had put on considerable mass over the last year, though beneath the loose clothing it was difficult to discern quite how well defined he had become. Nonetheless, standing at 5’8 he had seemed to already grow into his stature despite his youth. And as he moved, spinning with the typical grace and precision of a Hyuuga, it was clear he took his training seriously. The standard rotation technique was quite simple for him to perform at this point. His chakra control was exceptional, and he could produce chakra from each of his tenketsu simultaneously. Now, it was a matter of infusing that chakra with Fuuton, all without the use of handseals. For most shinobi that would be a daunting task but members of the Hyuuga clan learned from a young age how to produce and manipulate chakra without hand seals.

He could already perform several Fuuton ninjutsu without seals, though the scale of this technique and the complexity of the taijutsu aspect made it more complicated. Nonetheless, he was determined to succeed. He had no intentions to begin training in any other elements anytime soon he the least he could do was hone his Fuuton and incorporate it into his taijutsu styles. He still had to learn how to use a sword and find a way to blend such techniques seamlessly with projectiles and Jyuuken. But at least with Fuuton it was easy enough to apply cutting properties to his raw chakra manipulation in order to increase the deadliness of his techniques. But he had to be efficient with his time and only learn what he thought he would actually use and rely on regularly. Certainly, being able to turn a defensive technique into offense would be useful to him. And as a long-range fighter first and foremost it was important to be able to have means to deter an opponent from getting too close.

Performing his rotation jutsu for the third time within the growing crater that formed from his previous attempts, Takeshi refined his chakra further, imparting the cutting properties of wind, imagining his chakra oscillating against itself, thinner and sharper as he released it outward. The tell-tale sound of whistling winds let him know that he had successfully managed to infuse Fuuton into his rotation. He slowed his spin and so too did the chakra around him begin to destabilize and slow before expanding and losing its structure. Takeshi panted as he felt himself begin to sweat lightly. That was close, but he wanted something that could last longer, create a defense that would sustain long enough for him to prepare another attack or jutsu while the winds swirled around him. “Not quite” he muttered to himself, he was still relying too much on the traditional feel of the rotation, letting his body lead the way for his chakra rather than empowering the jutsu to sustain itself.

One more time and he flowed additional chakra into the technique, enough to help it persist even after he stopped moving. His control was good enough that it only took a minor adjustment to maintain the form of the wind infused chakra shell once it had enough potency to sustain itself. This time he stood in the center for a full minute or more as the wind swirled around him, keeping an adequate safe zone in the middle. Naturally his Byakugan was active while he trained so that he could assess the weaknesses in his own technique and discern if there were any gaps where the flow of chakra or density of cutting wind wasn’t as strong. But within the dome his vision was clouded in a sense, only really able to see beneath him without having to strain his eyes to work through the dense layer of chakra around him.

Surely, only the most dedicated of shinobi would be training this late into the night. That or someone who had a really shitty third-shift guard gig. Taiga smiled at the thought. He'd been there, done that, got the flak jacket. It was certainly not healthy for his mental health or his sleep schedule, but here he was, also awake at this time but unlike the figure who was training hard doing nothing productive and merely walking aimlessly to cure the distress his soul was feeling. The figure was a young man, though one that was beginning to come into his prime. He danced fluidly as he waved about in a way that was obvious to Taiga, who had seen and studied carefully all the martial arts of Konohagakure. The young man before him was a Hyuuga. If that hadn't been obvious enough, his attempted Jyuuken techniques made it clear. It was, of course, a sight to beholden.

It was also enough to take Taiga way from the memories that had haunted him and cause him to engage.

"You damn kids, always making noise in the middle of the night and preventing hobos like me from getting any sleep..." he said in a booming, but clearly sarcastic and joking manner. as his hand went up to the back of his hair and he slowly approached the boy. As he came closer he noticed the boys features more clearly- the ponytail, the forehead protector fitted over the forehead. Was he a member of the branch family? Main members of the Hyuuga rarely put their forehead protectors on their heads- as if to confirm to the world their status within their inbred clan. While Taiga had never been much a fan of Takeo, he was happy that some none cousin DNA was circulating in that genetic pool.

"I see you are working on Jyuuken, and I can guess you are a martial artist. You know, I'm something of a martial artist myself?" he said, hoping the kid would be interested in training. Using his body a bit would help him tire out faster so he could finally get just a few hours of sleep. These days the only thing that held back his memories and horrors... his monsters, was exhaustion and the point of breaking. Despite his rather unserious tone, it was clear from his body language and his powerful presence that he was a powerful combatant. If Takeshi looked at him with his byakugan, he'd also be able to see the insane amount of chakra that resided in Taiga due to his tailed beast.

As the winds around him began to subside, Takeshi sensed the arrival of a massive source of chakra. At least as potent as either of his parents, potentially even greater. He observed him closely, taking in the details of his body, even as he saw the vibrant chakra paths beneath his skin. He smirked at the comment, it was clear this guy wasn’t just some vagrant. Was this Awai Fanho? He had heard he had returned recently but he couldn’t recall ever meeting him, at least not since he was just a little kid. “I thought I knew most of Konoha’s Bannin. Are you that guy, Fanho? Returning from your long training after the war?” he scowled. He was less courteous in the middle of the night, he felt he could be closer to his true self, training with his full strength and not having to put on airs of propriety. He was glad his father was talking of stepping down, but he wasn’t sure he could put much more faith in someone that hadn’t even fought Kiri during the war. In fact, he wasn’t sure there was anyone in Konoha he could truly respect, even his mother had recently retired, for all her strength. And in one way or another he felt each of his older siblings had given up and abandoned their family. Only his twin sister was close to him, and she was rapidly falling behind as Takeshi’s training within ROOT consumed his life and gave him purpose.

He nodded as the grey-haired man mentioned that he was a martial artist. Takeshi had no idea what to expect of the man except that he was surely outclassed in every way. But that had never stopped him from training before. From his parents to Yoru, or even Masami and Yozei, he had always trained under Jounin and Bannin. “I’m just a Genin. Hyuuga Takeshi, please go easy on me” he greeted, dipping his head in a slight bow as he remembered some of his manners. But there was a certain intensity about his activated Byakugan and the way he carried himself. And no sooner than he finished speaking, he charged forward at 10 Speed, channeling chakra into his palms as he aimed a double palm strike toward the man’s chest. It was a simple technique, powerful enough to drop most weaker opponents but in this bout it would surely be an easily evaded opening move as he hoped to lure the man into a false assessment of his skill level.

~ Jyuuken : Twin Striking Palm
D-rank Nintaijutsu Maneuver
Often used as a finishing strike, the user will charge chakra through their palms before they deliver the blow. They will then strike with one palm inverted over the other into the opponent’s abdomen. The chakra that is injected directly into the opponent’s lungs and solar plexus causing significant internal damage, fully capable of collapsing a lung and cracking ribs provided the opponents [Strength] does not exceed the user’s [Control]-5.
Of course, as Takeshi charged in and made his more telegraphed attack, his mind was already working on his next counter. He learned Jyuuken to gain respect from the Hyuuga clan and to work towards fulfilling his mother’s dream. But the truth was, Fuuton and even archery came more naturally to him. Channeling chakra into his chest as he made his Jyuuken strike, he would aim to quickly evade and get distance once again from the man that claimed to be skilled in martial arts. He wasn’t opposed to trading a few blows with the mysterious man, but for now he would be cautious and make him work slightly to keep in close range with him. Of course, he had no way of knowing the extent of Taiga’s abilities or just how difficult of an opponent he could be. The blast of wind would propel out from his chest, aiming to push back both him and Taiga simultaneously in opposite directions. There was no cutting aspect to the wind’s but they would manifest with 15 Speed and impact with equal Strength.

That would hopefully be enough to get back to a safe distance of at least 20 meters, or at least it would if it struck the man. Against such a high-level combatant it was more likely to be evaded or interrupted altogether. But as long as Takeshi could propel himself backward at least then the jutsu concept would be a success. There was still a lot of potential to explore with Fuuton, especially in supplementary uses that didn’t apply the cutting properties. But it was a fine line between relying too much on jutsu and not enough on his own bodily control and athleticism. The only way to perfect such a balance however was testing techniques against high-level combatants and learning in combat.

The Survivors

The boy was astute in his observations and Taiga was no fool that before a Hyuuga he could bear no secrets. His hair stood slightly on the back of his neck ass he subconsciously remembered the bewildering thought that the Hyuuga literally saw through people, and knew every part of them down to their tenketsu. His mind wondered. What did Suukairaa look like? Was his tenketsu any different from that of a lesser man? Moving past the obvious questions, he pondered who this Hyuuga boy was completely in the dark about the boy's noble parentage and oblivious to the fact that his father was none other than Natsuki Takeo. He didn't have much more time to ponder however as the boy scowled a question at him- with perhaps a level of sass that rivaled his very own.

“I thought I knew most of Konoha’s Bannin. Are you that guy, Fanho? Returning from your long training after the war?” Taiga let out a long hardy laugh as the question graced his ears.

"That guy? Nah, fuck that guy." he said with another round of deep chuckles at the clear disapproval of Fanho by this boy. It was real hoot and for a moment almost took Taiga's mind off of what had been bothering him, only for his mind to catch up to the word war. He paused briefly, examining his hands for a moment as his tone changed to a more serious one. "I'm a mere jounin and the war was my training. Unlike he, I suppose I wasn't Lord Natsuki's grace enough to be spared the horrors of war... not that anyone in Konohagakure truly was." Taiga said, his words leaking vitrol as the boy before him moved to a combat stance. He would lower his own head slightly in a bow as he took his own position.

Heh, me, a bannin.
They'd have to be real desperate for a runt like you to be at the top wouldn't they? Sukairaa chuckled.

"Sarutobi Taiga- your wish is my command."

With little time to spare the boy would approach with a refreshing amount of seriousness. Unlike Fanho or his other compatriots in his youth, the boy was silent and focused. His mouth didn't run excessively and there needn't be a joke behind every strike. Like a bird of prey, Taiga's eyes watched his opponent carefully. Given his earlier movements in the training park and the tells of his physical composition, Taiga could tell he was going to pull his first strike- it was also fairly typical of a spar not to open with all you have. He could also tell, given his ability to do the technique himself to a degree, that the boy would open with a Jyuuken palm strike.

Unaware of what the boy was capable of he would be careful over callous- something Taiga had learned through many a battle, and rather than engage, would swiftly move away, leaping back to put distance between them while building up tailwind, all the while as his eyes would be very alive as they darted about. He'd also make no effort to counter-attack, letting the boy make his intended escape. It would also cause him to raise his eyebrow.

"How curious- a Hyuuga who avoids direct combat..." Taiga would mutter. In most situations, Hyuuga or martial artists would be laying down a barrage of strikes... perhaps this boy preferred to fight another way. Taiga's hands would come together as he contemplated using a Genjutsu, only to decide that it would ruin their fun. Instead, he'd form a jumbo shuriken (1m radius), reaching down into the earth to pull the material to do so.

He'd spin gracefully as he lobbed the shuriken in the direction of the boy- not at full strength and nothing too serious that a chuunin level combatant couldn't deal with. Afterall, he doubted this boy was just a little ole helpless genin.

Flying Swallow • Birds of Prey
S-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
Prerequisite: 50 Willpower, [Perception]
With immense willpower and perception skills, Taiga has trained himself to be one with his environment much like birds of prey. Able to keep his focus in all situations with great pose he is cognizant of subtle details around him, capable of honing in on the slightest changes of air or even the smallest movements in the fibers of an opponents clothes, allowing him to pick up on their movement and predict it before it is complete. This can also be used outside of combat for lip reading, or even guessing what someone writes by watching the eraser of the pencil etc. This causes him to seem rather ADD at times as his eyes rapidly tracking movements around him. A downfall to this technique however is that while his eyes and brain may be aware of movement, his body is not always capable of knowing and keeping up. Meaning he has to be physically capable still of responding to threats or capitalizing on weaknesses, even if he perceives them.

Konoha no Senken • Tailwind
B-Rank Maneuver Taijutsu
Required: [Heavenly Body Control]
The Flying Swallow Style developed by the Sarutobi family is a NinTai style. To circumvent the need for ninjutsu in Konoha no Senken, practitioners instead use their own explosive movements to bend the wind around their body and create a powerful tailwind behind them. While they move, this tail wind violently circulates around their body, building up pressure. Each post the the user is consecutively moving forward at a minimum of [Speed]/2, the wind gains [Speed]/2 strength. It can be used as a shield to protect the user, or through the use of another technique can be released. The maximum amount of times the technique can gain speed is 2 times. If the user stops moving or drops below [Speed/2] for more than a post the wind dissipates.

Konoha no Senken • Dance of the Falling Leaf/b]
B-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
The only limit to the speed of which Taiga control his body, via rapid acceleration or assimilation, is the speed in which his mind can physically send the impulse to his body to do so. With Taiga's high body control, he has trained and honed his mind and body to be as one, capable of reacting near the speed of thought in terms of controlling himself. This allows him to create interesting attacks by rapidly changing his movement patterns while fighting.

[Tools]
D-Rank Ninjutsu
After phasing a body part into a material, Taiga will channel raw chakra into it shaping the material to form basic shinobi tools: kunai, senbon, arrows, shuriken, or fuma shuriken. In one go, this technique can only manipulate up to 1x1x1 meters of material meaning nothing can be made bigger or in a larger quantity than that. After jutsu completion, the completed tool is ejected from the source material and sits upon the source's surface, if gravity allows it. Tools have the properties and durability of their source material, however if Taiga channels chakra throughout the duration of the creation of the tools they can be augmented to a strength equal to his [Control].

The stranger earned a slight amount of respect with his comment about Fanho. At least he wasn’t someone who bought into big talk and no action to back it up. It seemed most Konoha shinobi were all too happy to pretend the war didn’t happen and that peace was still something that was sustainable. Another modicum of respect at the mention of having fought in the war. That was more than he had done himself, at least until the final pushes fighting back against Kirigakure. But he still felt the scars and remembered when the mist rolled in and threatened to snuff out the will of fire.

He scoffed again at the thought of Fanho and the 17th Hokage. “Yeah, couldn’t have anything happen to his precious successor, right? But the rest of us were left to suffer instead” he scowled as the image of his grandfather gurgling blood filled his mind. He had laid down his life so that Takeshi could get his twin sister to safety. He had spent Kirigakure’s invasion of Konoha hiding in the forest before eventually making contact with returning troops. The 14-year-old shook his head, willing the memories away as he focused his mind on sparring with this Jounin. His eyes widened at the name, he recognized it. But he couldn’t dwell on that right now. It was time to see if the rumors about Taiga were true.

The initial exchange, if one could call it that was lackluster. Takeshi charged in and then both of them leaped back. He had heard Taiga was known for being hard to pin down, but he still expected some kind of counterattack. If he intended on creating space though, then the young Hyuuga could work with that. He trained enough to ensure that he was capable at any range. Immediately, he would adapt, reaching for a pair of kunai and tossing them center mass at 15 str/spd and the second at 14, one staggered behind the other in a way that might trick a novice into thinking there was only one projectile. It was a basic technique, common among shinobi.

However, as he tossed his kunai, Taiga reached into the earth and pulled out a shuriken made of stone. ‘The hell’ his eyes narrowed. He hadn’t seen any hand seals but more surprising was the way the man’s chakra flared was unnatural. Instead of the usual blue chakra, his tenketsu was flooded with a surge of a deep grey coloration that seemed to come from deep within his core. He had begun reaching for a shuriken to continue his projectile assault but the strange chakra gave him a brief pause, and instead, he hesitated very briefly before leaping upward at 12 speed, flipping gracefully through the air as the large shuriken passed beneath him. Channeling chakra into his own shuriken he coated it in a layer of wind before launching it while still in mid-air with 15 Strength. It would again be aimed at center mass but if Taiga moved to evade, it would charge directions at the last moment, following after him. Despite being only a Genin, it was clear Taiga’s intuition was correct and the young Hyuuga was in fact more akin to a Chunin-level combatant.

This masks the second projectile and makes it more difficult for the opponent to completely avoid. Opponents with a Perception technique equal or higher in rank may be able to see both projectiles clearly within a reasonable distance, though they'll still have to properly defend against it.

Taiga couldn't suppress a chuckle at the young man's mention of Fanho as his "precious successor." This youth possessed a sassy demeanor, and Taiga wholeheartedly embraced it. With careful scrutiny, Taiga observed the initial barrage of projectiles unleashed by the boy. It was discernible to him that another attack lay concealed within the first, yet he remained unfazed. Resolute, Taiga's chestplate resonated as it discharged its Koton and his body assimilated it in the blink of an eye. In a seamless motion he stepped forward towards the incoming atack.

"It's his loss, really. The war... did not treat me well but I came out on the other side it's conqueror..." Taiga remarked with a hint of pain—a sensation that Takeshi likely empathized with more than Takeo or Fanho. Taiga's thoughts wandered momentarily, his focus on Takeshi diminishing as he advanced with unspoken strength, seemingly without care of the incoming attack. His mind wandered further as memories flooded his brain completely removing him from the situation.

He could discern the stains of blood on his hands and jackets. Sensations of warmth dissipating from him—as he cradled him his life slipping away. His clenched fist pounded against the ground as he unleashed a roar of rage amidst a swirling tempest of smoke. Without regard for them, he strode through the projectiles unscathed, advancing unyieldingly even against the subsequent onslaught. The projectiles, including the fuuton ones, rebounded harmlessly off him, as if inconsequential.

As the barrage deflected off him, he seamlessly transitioned from composed strides to a sudden burst of intense speed, yet remaining within the realm of the young man's comprehension. With calculated precision, he retracted his punch, executing a maneuver reminiscent of the Jyuuken of the Hyuga clan, descending into a lunge before delivering an upward open-palm strike toward Takeshi's chest.

"Tell me- what happened during the war here. Here in Konoha while I was off watching men die in my arms fighting in a god forsaken country we should of never been in." Taiga growled as he would push up. If he managed to land his hit, he would make sure to pull back on the power do not actually break the boys sternum, but instead perhaps take him off his feet.

There was something different about Taiga from the other adults of Konoha- he held no bars. Every thing he thought he said. He was direct, even in his distaste for Fanho and the Hokage. He, in all his power, was liberated to say as he wanted. Feel as he felt. Perhaps it was less liberation and more privilege of being such a successful host... after all, could they afford to lose a legendary Jinchuuriki just because his mouth ran opposite those in power? It took tens of candidates and decades-near-centuries to usually find a match like this.
