Lost in Thought

Post by HopeOfDamnation » Tue Mar 21, 2023 4:14 pm

It was a rainy afternoon when Kibou reaches the arena, thoughts clouded like the dark skies above. He'd come, as he had done many times before, to clear his mind and calm his nerves, which he really was in desperate need of. Tensions have been high in the hyuuga household and the young genin couldn't help but feel guilty, almost like it was his mere existance that draped the clan in a blanket of unease. Kibou was used to the occasional snide remark or disapproving look, but today it all was too much. So he did as he always does.

He began by doing some light stretches, before waving together a few hand seals, calling forth a small tree, which shaped itself into a perfect copy of him in just a few seconds. The Hyuuga was slightly disturbed by it, something that was so flawlessly identical in every way - from the thin scar on it's upper lip, to the exact number of freckles across it's cheeks. Regardless, Kibou pushes those thoughts aside and took a fighting stance, willing the doppelganger to do the same. He charged first, striking precisely and carefully, like he would with the Gentle Fist, but he did not expend any chakra, intending only to practice the flowing movement of the unique style. The boy his wooden duplicated eventually synchronized into a Dance-like rhythm, both throwing out attack after attack, blocking, dodging and rep eating. The half-Senju's mind was taken up by this mock-battle and all thought of anything other than it all but disappeared. For a second, the brunette lost his concentration, only to end up reeling back from the sharp kick of his wooden double. Regaining his footing quickly, he subdued it, before motioning for it to stop. He'd heard something.

Activating the byakugan, Kibou's gaze pierced the trees and walls around him, looking for the source of this noise. Cautiously, he drew himself into a defensive stance, ready to act if needed, wood clone following his lead. After a moment or two, his posfure relaxed, if slightly, and he went back to sparring with the conjured guardian.

The Senju had been through the list of shinobi may have the potential to be a member of ROOT. It brought back memories of the days when he himself was in that branch of the bigger organisation. When he was flicking through the list he came across a name which he had heard of before. A Young Hyuuga and Senju cross who had caused a bit of turmoil for the clans to eventually sort out and reach an agreement. He was not sure what the decision was in the end but he had never seen him around the Senju compound, although he himself did not spend much time there these days.

But, if he was on this list, he must have displayed skill to a high enough degree to be considered for the position. Gojo had decided he would go and meet this youth and see what he was about, get a sense of who this kid was. He stood up and left the room. All potential recruits were monitored by the organisation, so it would not be hard to track him down. As he walked along the corridor he stop next to a door and went in, moving quickly through the room he found the file which contained some encrypted details only ANBU operatives could view via a jutsu. This file contained the name of the operative who was in charge of monitoring the potential recruit. Knowing that, Gojo tuned into the communication fuuin and made contact with that operative, who instructed him on the whereabouts of the youth. Knowing where to go, Gojo left the headquarters and began heading over to the training area.

It was not long before he was waking up to the arena where the youth was training. The the lack of comms from the watcher only meant that he was still there, or should be. And a few moments later he could see two figures growing bigger as he approached.

’Hows it going lad?’ The Senju said in a calm voice with his hands tucked into his pockets casually.

Unbeknownst to the clan hybrid, Kibou had a shadow. For days now Tengu had spent the majority of his waking hours watching the Hyuuga Genin. He was curious. Both professionally and personally. Outside of his Anbu uniform and the red-faced bird mask he wore, Tengu was not dissimilar from the individual he had volunteered to observe. Each outcasts of the Hyuuga clan, forced to be named as branch family members and adorned with a cursed seal, despite the fact that their mothers were each from the main family. In fact, their mothers were first cousins though the two boy’s had never met, at least not as far as Takeshi could remember. His own mother Aina had always been a rebel and an outcast from the Hyuuga family, donning tattoos and a brash attitude; the Usurper they had called her after she had been taken hostage in the events directly preceding the former clan leaders murder. Many blamed her, despite her only being a teenage girl set upon by S-ranked missing ninja that had invaded the village. 17 years it had been since that day, and still the Hyuuga clan refused to forget the stain on her name.

From what Tengu had observed Kibou seemed close with his mother, and unlike himself still lived among the Hyuuga compound. He trained diligently but often alone. The reason being that the rumors about his paternity seemed to be true. A hybrid with a Senju, the first of his kind. Previously the Hyuuga would never allow such an abomination to happen, but the 17th Hokage; Natsuki Takeo, had set a dangerous precedent, marryng into the Hyuuga clan despite being raised by the Inuzuka and speculated to have genetic lineage to them. He had singlehandedly opened the floodgates and emboldened young Hyuuga who dared to find comfort and love outside of their clan. And now the clan was left to deal with the aftermath that was Hyuuga Kibou. Many Hyuuga elders wanted the boy dead but had no means to act against the protection of the Hokage and the more accepting Senju clan.

Takeshi wasn’t yet sure what to make of Kibou. But he intended to find out exactly who this kid was and what he was capable of. Whether he was a threat to the clan and the village or an asset. Suddenly the crackle of a familiar voice broke over the com link tattooed in his ear. “I have eyes on the target. Arena 3. He’s alone” he relayed from a distance of 200 meters away, well outside the arena. Rain dripped down his black hood and across the porcelain white bird’s mask. His eyes bulged as his Byakugan focused on Kibou’s position. As was his prerogative, Tengu had positioned himself at a suitable vantage point, near the top of a 50-meter-tall tree at the edge of a nearby training field. There were many forested patches throughout Konoha, even deeper in the center of the village it was common to have small thickets of trees between buildings. As such there was always somewhere for trained Anbu operatives to find cover and vantage points.

The young operative would watch as his partner arrived on the scene. Only two years they had trained together as part of the same unit and already he trusted the older teenager as much as his own brother. Notching his bow as was reflex at this point he covered Noeru with unwavering focus. “Should I take a little off the top? I have a shot.” He suggested over coms, they needed to test him after all. But Tengu wasn’t about to fire off rashly. He would wait for a signal. After all they were professionals not a bunch of trigger-happy idiots. The slightest hand gesture would be enough, Anbu were taught a variety of hand signals and secret codes. They even had a series of specific combination keyed in to their signals and were experienced enough with one another’s habits that they could typically anticipate one another’s actions and positions as if it were a 6th sense.
Jutsu UsedShow
Silent Movement
C-Ranked Taijutsu Discipline
A fundamental skill in a hunter’s repertoire, Takeshi has learned to move at up to half his speed stat without making any discernable sounds. Even in thick foliage he can identify and navigate around fragile twigs and dry leaves and step on vegetation in a way as to not make a sound and similarly even draw weapons undetected unless the opponent has an applicable perception technique of equal or greater rank.

Lurking in the Shadows
C-Ranked Taijutsu Discipline
This pseudo-camouflage technique doesn’t grant any form of true invisibility, simply it dictates Takeshi’s ability to approach and stalk his targets unseen or similarly retreat quickly. Much like the animals of the forest he can seem to disappear simply by stepping into foliage or the slightest forms of cover, knowing exactly how to navigate any natural or artificial obstructions that may present itself without exposing himself to visual observation unless his opponent has a visual perception jutsu of equal or higher rank.

Foremost Polygraph
B-Ranked Nintaijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: Perception & Byakugan
The user will activate their byakugan, they will use this to check for subtle facial features, the way the target moves their hands and their general mannerism, see their heart and how fast it is beating, and other minute details that no normal eye could see. This allows the user to see if a target is lying and detect any signs of hostility or deception with pinpoint accuracy. Only if the target has a technique of equal or greater rank for masking their body language will they be able to deceive the user.

~Byakugan: Telescopic Vision
D Rank Ninjutsu
By channeling a small amount of chakra to the Hyuuga's Byakugan, the clan member uses their doujutsu to zoom in like a telescope, allowing them to see much farther away. In doing so, the Hyuuga member is able to see up to 250 meters away as though they were mere feet away. It should be noted that while using their telescopic vision the Hyuuga experiences tunnel vision, making it difficult to see their surroundings. This jutsu can be maintained as long as the Hyuuga channels chakra to their eyes.

*[Flawless Aim Style • Absolute Aim]
A-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Having mastered the art of ranged combat, the practitioner is capable of calculating all outside factors before launching their projectiles. Ambient factors such as temperature, winds, moisture, any terrain, and even lack of sight on their target can not hinder their aim. So long as they have a means of detecting the location of their opponent and no impassible objects or unavoidable defenses stand in their way, the practitioner's attacks will strike their target with pinpoint accuracy without fail. Living targets must have a Perception technique equal or higher in rank to be able to perceive the practitioner's attacks without some sort of additional defense.

*[Flawless Aim Style • Sniper’s Mark]
A-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Focusing for half a post and torquing every single muscle in their body, the practitioner concentrates on their target and launches a single, long-distance projectile attack. This attack can strike its target without losing Strength, Speed, or Accuracy up to [(Speed + Strength)/2] x 100 meters, rounded down.

Kibou raised a hand as he saw the Senju approach and dismissed the clone, turning towards the newcomer with a curious look upon his face. The half-Hyuuga's pale eyes observed the older nin carefully and with caution, before a feint smile graced his features, though his body language was still slightly tense. "It's... Going, I guess. I guess things are just as messy as they've always been."

The boy looked around, in an effort to hide his tense nerves. "I've never actually seen one of you before. Is there something wrong or do just you come here to train often?" The younger fiddled around absent-mindedly with the pouches in his belt, before looking towards one of the training dummies. "You can join me if you want to? What's your name?" Kibou was, of course, unaware of the chuunin's true purpose and intent, but even then, he was careful not to fully trust a stranger, especially one dressed in full Anbu uniform.

Kitsune couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle as he heard his comrade over the comms. Takeshi was as eager as ever. Completely ignoring what the youth said, Kitsune activated his communications seals and spoke as if he was speaking to the lad in front of him - ’There seems to be one to many in this area.’ And once those words left his mouth he hoped that Takeshi understood the message. And when the deed was done, Kitsune waved a string of hand seals before roots erupted from the ground and wrapped themselves around the one that remained. It was time to test the mettle of the young lad. See whether he could live up to the potential others saw in him. The Jutsu move quickly and with great strength. But for the moment there was no malicious intent. The grip was firm but not strong enough to cut off any circulation. But his whole body would be covered in wood. Wood that would immobilise him unless the Jutsu would be reversed or the bindings were broken. To a bystander the it looked like a human shaped cocoon. There was no gap for his mouth, but there were holes for his nostrils. His eyes were essentially sealed away for the time being. This was not something he enjoyed doing, but it was an effective way of breaking someone’s spirit, especially when the bindings would become tighter and the victim would begin loosing feeling throughout their body.

With that in place, Kitsune waved his hand signalling Takeshi to make his way down, unless he has done so already. Now it was time for some light interrogation. ’Are you a Hyuuga, or a Senju?’ Kitsune asked. For the moment, his tone remained cool and calm just like it was earlier. Almost soothing, but that could take a sharp turn - depending on his answer.

Tengu understood the instruction loud and clear as he drew his drawstring back, adjusted his aim and let his arrow loose. The arrow would come hurtling in from above at 20 Speed and Strength, nearly undetectable in the dark sky and the constant pattering of rain the arrow would surely strike true. Unless by some miracle it would pierce through Kibou’s skull…or at least the likeness of him as the Mokuton clone was targeted with a precision shot directly between the eyes.

From there, following the appropriate signal, the young operative channeled chakra through his body, surrounding himself in futon chakra as he leaped from the tree. Gliding through the air he approached swiftly and eloquently as the rain parted around him He would keep his Byakugan active but scale back the telescopic vision, allowing him to see nearly 360 degrees around him once more. If the boy did manage to evade the roots somehow Takeshi would swiftly be upon him, cutting him off wherever he went, ready to perform his gentle palm techniques and shut off the boy’s chakra if his partner wasn’t able to restrain him.

But assuming the wood did ensnare Kibou, Takeshi would land next to his partner. “Don’t try to fight us or run. It will only end badly for you” he warned, his mask modulating his voice, making it a few tones deeper. Like a true Tengu descending from the sky he was here to make a judgement on this boy who lived two lives, two identities. But where did his loyalties truly lie? “The Hyuuga clan forbid you practicing Mokuton. So which is it, are you a Hyuuga or a Senju?” he reiterated, nodding to his partner to indicate he allow the boy to speak. All the while he monitored the boy, his heart rate and subtle signs of deception.

A-ranked Fuuton Jutsu
After forming the necessary handseals Takeshi will flow Fuuton natured chakra around his body in a thin veil. Unlike most Fuuton jutsu this veil contains no cutting properties, but it does create a buffer that blows aside any airborne particulates. In addition, it allows Takeshi to soar through the air, controlling his direction at will or conversely as he typically opts to do he can rely more on the Fuuton focused around his feet, running, jumping or even rolling across the sky as if he were on solid ground, remaining in full control of his movements. This jutsu can last for a maximum of 7 posts, allowing the user to move at a speed equal to his control to a maximum of his Speed stat.

Shit.

Kibou's heart began to race, the attack a frightening surprise. He'd suspected the Anbu in front of him had ill intent from the start, but he hadn't expected what seemed to be an outright assasination attempt. The why was obvious - his clan wanted him dead, his very existance was against all they stood for and he could very well pose a threat to Konoha, given enough time to grow in power and let resentment foster in his heart. The half-Hyuuga barely had any time to think, but at the last second, he managed to use the simple substitution technique - replacing himself with one of the dummies and letting the roots wrap themselves around it rather than him. He had a lot less luck avoiding the until now hidden partner to his attacker, a taller figure who moved in to close off his every chance of escape. It seemed clear now that this was planned, but for how long, the boy didn't know.

The genin almost growled, like a cornered animal, but knew there really was no way for him to get out alive. He looked around, trying to think up some sort of plan of escape to no avail. "Far as I see it, there's no choice I make that doesn't end badly for me. " Still the boy relaxed, yet Takeshi would probably notice the peculiar look in his white eyes and slight furrowing of his brows, like he was still ready to try and defend himself if push really came to shove, but was, for now, willing to comply. "I belong to the Hyuuga clan, but more than that, I am a Konoha shinobi. Mokuton would be an asset to the village. But since I know exactly what you're here for, be done with it." Kibou sighed and steeled his gaze, looking straight into the older's eyes. "You're here to get rid of me, even though I have never shown any disloyalty towards the clan."

Noeru watched the events unfold. The youth substituted with a dummy and Takeshi arrow dispersed his clone. This may have looked like a wise thing to do and the boys part but it really was not. It was obvious that the youth had no intention on working with the ANBU. Noeru understood the drawback of using the substitution technique well and utilised it to his advantage. The Senju performed the same jutsu once again, targeting the youth now that he was not able to move due to the use of substitution. Hopefully this would work, and if it did the Noeru would bind his body but the jutsu would only cover him to the top of his throat, allowing him so speak, breathe and see what was happening in front of him.

With this done and out the way, The young Senju listened to what the captured youth had to say. It seemed he did not get it. Living two lives like that, not committing to either of his bloodlines was silly, especially at that age. Noeru himself did not fully agree with the way the Hyuuga dealt with the situation, but he was not going to impose on matter that have been settled. Instead he would try and find out more about the boy. 'Do you know what having the Senju bloodline means?' The Senju said gravely. Noeru was not expecting much from a youth if his stature. Especially when he was so easily prepared to forfeit his life.

Tengu stalked the cornered Genin like a panther, cutting off any avenue of escape. His hands glowed with chakra as he settled into a Jyuuken stance. If he continued to run he would immobilize him and shut down his chakra. He could respect the kid survival instincts at least; he might have some potential. But how he held up his resolve against being captured and interrogated would be far more telling than basic combat skills. One could train themselves to fight but how one endured mental strain when there was no chance of winning was something else entirely. “If we wanted you dead, you would be. I think you know that” he stated, there was more the masked men wanted from him than his life.

Having cut off his retreat and bought some time, his partner would have ample time to cast the restraining jutsu again. The Mokuton sprouted up and ensnared Kibou with such speed that even Takeshi wouldn’t have been able to evade it, and certainly wouldn’t have had any means of breaking free. Perhaps Noeru was overdoing it a bit, but that was one way to show Kibou just how outclassed he was. The Hyuuga donning the red-faced mask of a Tengu, approached the captive, swiftly drawing a kunai and placing the tip just below the boy’s left eye. "You live two lives, loyal to the Hyuuga during the day, but you practice Mokuton in secret at night. Does your mother know you use your father’s gifts, even after he abandoned you? If you’d rather be a Senju then give your eyes back to the Clan, change your name and never set foot in the Hyuuga compound again” he insisted menacingly as the knife pricked against his skin, threatening to gauge his eye out.

This time, Kibou was caught completely off-guard. The roots tightly wrapped around him, completely immobilizing the young Hyuga. His mind raced and he could feel himself starting to panic, yet he refused to allow himself to be consumed by the fear. The genin tried to calm himself discreetly before he spoke, not wanting to let either of the two Anbu members know he was afraid.

Kibou almost felt like laughing at Noeru's question. Of course he knew - not only were the Senju the oldest and possibly most powerful clan in Konoha, they were among the most storied as well. "I do, of course. I know the clan's history, traditions and principles very well. I know that they're one of the oldest and most important clans and I know of the Will of Fire," The boy spoke, before his gaze moved to the other Anbu. The feeling of the kunai under his eye was unpleasant to say the least, but any fear had long left the half-Hyuuga's heart. He stared directly into Takeshi's eyes, or at least the ones of the mask, with determination. "She... I haven't told her, but I doubt she doesn't know. And so what if my father abandoned me? Mokuton runs in my veins as well as his now." He paused, momentarily activating the Byakugan and peeking behind the older boy's mask. As he had expected, he saw the face of another Hyuuga under that of the red tengu. "We both know even if you rip one my eyes out they would be of no use to the clan. I don't want to be a Senju or I would have at least asked my relatives to accept me into their clan. And if you aren't here to kill me then why are you here?"

Noeru simply laughed in response to the youths comment about their clan. 'So you know... And yet you are offering your corpse to us so easily. I think I will kill you. Leaving a kekkei genkai as valuable at Mokuton in possession of someone so daft and irresponsible would be a nation wide mistake. It's our role to protect the village, why should I allow you to breathe when you give yourself up so easily?' The fury in his voice was apparent. Noeru did not know what the youth was thinking, whether he genuinely was silly enough to give himself up so easily, or whether he was just trying the tough guy act. Whatever happened, Noeru would be sure he made the right choice.

Tengu clenched the knife tightly. He had never killed before but he had caused a great many injuries to his targets If he felt it necessary he knew he had it in him to cut out the boy’s eyes. He felt a darkness within him as the boy spoke of the Will of Fire. So many in Konoha claimed to carry that will, but in his experience most of the teenagers of the village didn’t know a thing about true selflessness. The 17-year-old Special Jounin scowled as Kibou activated his Byakugan, meeting his own. Takeshi was the same as him, a half-breed and one born 4 years before Kibou. But he didn’t carry a secondary Kekkei Genkai. Nonetheless, he had Inuzuka blood in his veins and the temper of the his mother; Aina, the Berserker of the Hyuuga clan. “I don’t want your eyes for the sake of our clan. I want to know if you’re an asset or a liability” he spoke sternly. They were each stains on the main families purity, nobody in the clan wanted them to associate with one another in any capacity, but if he could prove his worth and his conviction then perhaps there was hope to change the staunch and traditional ways of the Hyuuga.

The Hyuuga operative narrowed his gaze, studying the captives chakra network as well as his body language for any signs of deception. His partner, Kitsune of the Senju clan had his own reasons for wanting to know the truth of who Kibou was. And he had a point. Kibou was a risk to two of Konoha’s oldest and most revered clans. He would be a high priority target by their enemies in Kirigakure and Iwagakure and if he were to be captured his DNA could be extracted and used against Konoha. Even with the branch seal marking there were those that could undo the effects, as much as the main family didn’t want to acknowledge that fact. In essence the cursed seal was meant more to keep the branch family subjugated under the main family rather than truly protect the Byakguan from falling into enemy hands. “What does the Will of Fire really mean to you? Do you understand your responsibility to the village? To both the Senju and the Hyuuga clan? You cannot be allowed to be captured or killed by the enemy!” he reiterated. He didn’t want to have to kill Kibou but he had to know he was capable of achieving the strength necessary to protect himself and the clan traits he possessed.

Kibou had found himself in quite a precarious situation it seemed. While he was certain Takeshi truly had no intention to kill him and fairly sure that wasn't the reason the two Anbu had come, the half-Hyuuga was a lot less sure about the other masked man, who seemed much more willing to express his disdain towards Kibou. The genin had to be careful or else he could very well end up gravely injured at the least.

"So far, I've only really been an asset to my knowledge. There is nothing I've done and nothing I intend to do to harm the village. In fact, the very reason I've been practicing my skill in Wood Release is so I can better help it." The boy spoke no lies, neither now nor for the whole of their exchange. "The Will of Fire is the binding, core principle of Konoha. The village must be protected above all as it has been for generations. To keep the village safe, the inhabitants must be kept safe, and to keep the inhabitants of the village safe, the village must be kept safe. And that often requires sacrifice, in the same way a parent would sacrifice themselves to save their family." The brunette took a deep breath before speaking again.

He knew what Takeshi spoke of all too well. "I understand and accept my responsibility to the village. For all the derision I have faced, I was born here, and so was my mother, and her mother before her. My family lives here - the both of them. And Konoha deserves and needs not just mine but all of our protection, so it can flourish and grow. It's been drilled into me by my mother that I am not to be captured or killed, lest my gifts fall into the wrong hands. And not only will I do my best not to allow myself to be used in such a way, but I've been looking for ways already to make it so there's nothing left of my body in the event I die. Is this enough of an answer for you, Takeshi?" The half-Senju spat out, eyes still boring deep into his cousin's.

Tenzin had been watching from a far. It seemed that the two potential captains really took pleasure in acting aggressive. It was a trait that the silver haired shinobi genuinely loved. Testing the will of a child with intimidation really was a good way to see if they would cry and not cut it, or accept death in the honor of their village. This shinobi was an incredibly important asset. Two major clan blood within the body of a single child was enough to make a mad scientist froth at the mouth. From 30 meters out, Tenzin hid within a tree. He would weave a couple hand seals and release an Advanced Shadow clone next to him. The puff of smoke would reveal an exact replica of Tenzin.

The clone would swiftly sprint to the location where this child was tied up and basically offered to the gods. Walking up slowly, dressed in normal Konoha attire, Tenzin would appear to walk into the scene with his arms folded. He would walk up and release Kibou from his restraints and start speaking to the child. "You did well, come with me." The man would start to lead the boy to the Anbu Hideout. While this was happening, the real Tenzin would have gotten a head start and made his way to his office in the Anbu Hideout.

As the two would be walking to the hideout Tenzin would reassure safety and ask questions to seemingly establish some kind of repour. "So Kibou, I want to first apologize for the hostility. We just wanted to see if you would wet your pants or hold your own. You did fairly well. You have to understand, just on bloodlines alone you poses great potential. My name is Tenzin Hatake, have you done any missions or trainings after you graduated from the Academy?" Tenzin was asking questions he already knew, this was just a simple tactic to see if the child would naturally lie or tell the truth. A personality breakdown never truly fit on a piece of paper, it usually developed through everyday small talk.

Kibou's eyes flipped to Tenzin's form as he approached, widening slightly in surprise. He sighed as the man released him, grateful just as much as he was confused. This man must've been someone higher ranking than the two Anbu and not by some small degree - else he'd be dead or worse by now. Still, despite the half-Senju's apprehensions, he followed Tenzin back to the hideout, steals weary and careful.

"It was... Intense, if I'm honest." Kibou gave a half-hearted chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "I am grateful for your faith in me and my potential. Hopefully I'll be used to the village and your cause." The clan hybrid studied the other man for a moment, remaining silent. " I haven't really been on many missions, but I've made it my duty to hone my skills to the best of my ability. I'm curious if this is a common way to recruit new members to the Anbu, though? Probably an effective one either way."
