Naruto Saigen Roleplay Welcome to Naruto Saigen Roleplay, an alternate universe roleplay based loosely off the manga series Naruto. NSRP offers a unique roleplay environment completely separated from the canon of the series, with it’s own backstory, lore, and characters. With our own history, NSRP is an entirely isolated universe, borrowing a thematic basis from the series, we owe our origins to Naruto, but our story to ourselves. In NSRP, there are two worlds, the world inhabited in the roleplay, and a spiritual realm that a mystical energy called chakra is supplied from. Centuries before the current time, there was a breach between the two worlds that allowed chakra, and the mysterious entities made of it to break into our world, which would result in humans gaining the power to harness chakra, and so began the modern era of ninja arts. Currently, we exist in an era of peace between the 5 great shinobi nations, but if history has taught us anything, its that things change quickly.

We have a bustling community, and a roleplay system designed to be open and encouraging of individual plots, relying on responsible roleplaying from the member base with moderator oversight to ensure fairness between all parties. From here, we’ll explore a history of the world, a brief explanation of certain key aspects of the world you’ll be roleplaying in, and an in depth guide to each of the major villages that are roleplayed in.

Technology
Technology in the Saigen universe is in a difficult phase. The general populace only has access to feudal Japan era technology, which means they are basically stuck in the middle-ages. In ninja villages, however, it is not uncommon to see modern-appearing appliances due to the development of fuuinjutsu as a means of technology. Similar to how in the real world people began to develop electrical circuits, fuuinjutsu is used as a circuit to mould chakra to power certain things like lights and refrigerators. These things would almost never appear outside the five great shinobi villages, and even then each village has varying levels of proficiency and reliance on this kind of technology.

As the general gist is middle-ages level tech, that means there are a few things which cannot exist in the saigen universe in the same manner that they do in ours. These include but are not limited to: Traditional Firearms, Headphones, Cameras and Motor Vehicles.

Important Terminology

Below is a list of words and concepts, some from the Naruto universe, some unique to our canon, that you’ll regularly see on the forum.
  • Chakra: A mystical energy unleashed into the world through the cataclysm all those years ago, chakra is a energy force that is now found in every living being on the planet. Chakra is composed of two energy, spiritual energy, harnessed and mastered via meditation, and body energy harnessed via physical training. Chakra can be utilized to enhance physical prowess, manipulated in its raw form, utilized to create affinities, or used to influence the minds of people around.
  • Affinities: One of the ways chakra is manipulated is through the use of affinities, something that can be inborn or learned. All people are born with an inborn affinity of at least one of five elements…
    • Katon: Known as fire release, katon chakra has the power of ignition. Katon chakra is used to combust all materials, flammable or otherwise, or simply create fire in it’s raw form, making its an extremely powerful offensive force.
    • Suiton: Known as water release, suiton chakra has the power of enveloping. Suiton chakra is used to create and manipulate water, which naturally envelopes and surrounds anything it comes in contact with, making it ideal for capture and defense.
    • Doton: Known as earth release, doton chakra has the power of endurance. Doton chakra is used to create and add to structures, which require no sustainment from the user, allowing users to create defenses and weapons that can be maintained throughout combat.
    • Raiton: Known as lightning release, raiton chakra has the power of shocking. Raiton chakra is used to create electrical energy, which can be used to destroy defenses and shock opponents, a powerful offensive quality.
    • Fuuton: Known as wind release, fuuton chakra has the power of cutting. Fuuton chakra is used to manipulate the flow of wind into making slicing air that can cut through and move around opponents.
  • Shinobi: A general term used for ninja, a shinobi is trained by a traditional academy within a villages. They come in a variety of ranks which is used to represent their strength and authority within the villages army.
    • Academy Student: Considered “E” rank, Academy students are still being trained in the arts of a shinobi and have not officially entered the fighting force yet.
    • Genin: Considered “D” rank, Genin are entry level shinobi and are typically the foot soldiers that offer support roles to the village.
    • Chuunin: Considered “C” rank, Chuunin are the bulk of the shinobi villages forces. They are skilled shinobi that can operate on their own or in groups to accomplish most general task work.
    • Special Jounin: Considered “B” rank, Special Jounin are high skilled shinobi that are tasked with specific duties, most commonly working in squadrons to accomplish specific jobs instead of general work.
    • Jounin: Considered “A” rank, Jounin are the elite, senior shinobi that have proven to be able to endure the test of combat, most often extremely skilled in a specific field, or highly capable in most fields.
    • Bannin: Considered “S” rank, these are forces of nature, Bannin are few and far between, practical demi gods that are capable of managing entire battlefields on their own, Bannin are feared and known world wide.
    • Kage: Also considered “S” rank, Kage are bannin that have been specifically tasked to manage a ninja village, whether they have been elected, seized the position through force, or selected by their daimyo.
  • Ronin: A general term used for any person that has the capacity to manipulate chakra to some extent, or is trained in a traditional art that sets them apart from the average person, but do not belong to one of the 5 great ninja villages. Ronin can originate from anywhere in the world.
    • Nukenin: Also known as missing ninja, Nukenin are shinobi that have abandoned their village for varying reasons. Their official village rank is discarded and they are categorized strictly by their numerical ranks. Nukenin pose an enormous security threat to their villages and methods of dealing with them vary from village to village. Nukenin are often sought after by multiple villages, not just their village of origin, due to the unique opportunities they create.
    • Samurai: While the shinobi are the militia of the 5 great ninja villages, Samurai are the militia of the countries, both the grand 5, and the other minor countries. Samurai are trained in dojos, and go through military training by their countries, but only use raw forms of chakra to enhance their fighting abilities. Samurai also follow the alphabetical ranking system universally, though individual countries may have their own internal ranking system as well.
    • Hinin: Considered "Non-human", Hinin is the bucket term used for martial artists of varying degree that have no oversight. A young man who joins a bandit camp and becomes a master as using a cleaver, raiding convoys that pass through his territory would be a Hinin. Additionally, a monk who learns to master chakra by being taught from someone who wields it. Hinin can be dangerous forces, and are evaluated by the alphabetical ranking system when they become acknowledged by any major military force. Most military forces share a database of Hinin due to their tendency to rapidly become threats to the wellbeing of others.
  • Spirits: Being from a realm opposite of ours where chakra originates from, spirits are mysterious forces of nature that now overlap with our world. Spirits require chakra to populate in our realm, making them the subject of myth and lore to the average citizen who is not familiar with chakra. Spirits controlled by shinobi are often referred to as summons, but they come in many shapes and forms, all of which can be referred to plainly as spirits.
    • Genma: Genma are 10 spirits of significance. Lost to time, and now the subject purely of legend, the Genma were said to be spirits that came through the cataclysm and conquered the lands, maintaining control over humanity for hundreds of years until humanity rose up against them and conquered them. It is now said that the genma are controlled by the 5 great shinobi villages, and are locked away as a contingency plan for war, though that's purely skepticism by those who don't know any better than to believe such tall tales.
  • Family: A family is a general term used to refer to any family line. A character Hyouto, Haruma could formally introduce himself as Haruma of the Family Hyouto. The term family gives no specific identifiers to what type of family it is, and can be a very broad term that includes hundreds of people
    • House The term House is a more specific term, referring to the immediate family and often the father's parentage. House originates as a political term, and is inclusive of everyone who does not fall into another category.
    • Lineage: A rather uncommon term, a lineage is a Family or House that passes down an art exclusively. Most commonly, lineages will teach their eldest child their unique art, and all other children will marry out of the family, even sons. This means that while the art is passed down, it is never available to more than a single household at any given time. While traditions vary from lineage to lineage, they are considered extremely sacred, and those who belong to lineages are equally feared and respected. Hasouta, Haruma would formally introduce himself as Haruma, Sole Recipient of the Hasouta Lineage.
    • Clan: While Clan can traditionally be used to define any sort of family, shinobi villages have come to use the term exclusively for those who carry of a Kekkei Genkai. Hyuuga, Haruma would formally introduce himself as Haruma of the Hyuuga Clan. Clan is a title of prestige, and is often very respected. It is considered poor form to introduce your Family or House as a clan if you do not possess a kekkei genkai.
      • Kekkei Genkai: Known as Bloodline Limits, Kekkei Genkai are genetic traits passed through family lines that present themselves. Those with Kekkei Genkai are extremely sought after due to their natural capability to utilize chakra, and their unique skills that often cannot be simulated with jutsu. All documented Kekkei Genkai either make home to one of the grand 5 villages, or have been hunted to extinction.

[The Beginning]
Our world was peaceful at its inception. Humans slowly became the dominant species on land and began to band together, forming small villages and a society reliant on agriculture. Minor fighting between villages occurred every so often but the horrors of war were unknown to the people.

In contrast, the Spirit Realm was constantly on the brink of war. 10 Grand Spirits with unique powers called the Genma lorded over parts of the Spirit Realm and were always trying to one up each other in an attempt to prove which Genma was truly the strongest. The Genma fully believed in the ideology of ‘Survival of the Fittest’ even if not all spirits did.

One such battle resulted in a direct confrontation between the Soul and Life Genmas. Their combined energy tore a hole out of their realm and into ours, forever connecting the two. At first the tear wasn’t big, a spirit would be spotted in the Human Realm every so often, forming the basis of many modern day fairy tales. As the fighting in the Spirit Realm became more intense, the minor tear began to grow in energy before finally erupting.

This eruption is known to scholars as ‘the Cataclysm.’ The accumulated energy within the tear finally reached critical mass and erupted, leaving a massive physical scar in our world. The energy tore a massive crater, known as ‘the Wellspring,’ into both worlds, one hole exiting into our world and the other exiting into the Spirit Realm. Chakra from the Spirit Realm seeped through the Wellspring, inundating our world with it. The Wellspring also allowed the free passage of spirits into our realm and vice versa, humans could gain passage into the Spirit Realm. A fragile peace between the two realms was forged until the Genma turned their eyes upon the Human Realm.

The mere sight of the Genma to humans was enough to make some bow in reverence. The Genma did not have to fight the humans at first as small pockets simply followed their commands, their numbers being enough for the Genma for now. As Genma established their presences within the Human Realm, their never ending fights soon followed. Fights for dominance broke out within the Human Realm after a time, humans being forced into wartime slaves.

For the next 3,000 years, humans were forced to fight for the Genma. A group of enslaved humans revolted against their oppressors and broke free. Finally free of the Genma, the first free humans retreated to the westernmost regions of the continent. There, they began to plan their fight against the Genma.

200 years later the human forces had grown with both humans and spirits who were also running from the Genma. Through guerilla tactics and raids, the humans were able to strengthen their forces. The union of humans and their spirit companions bore unintended consequences as well. The children of human-spirit couples gave rise to the first Kekkai Genkai and other such abilities that humans were able to hone to better fight the Genma.

After careful planning and deliberation, the human forces were able to liberate the region of what would become Wind Country. With the help of the humans within the region, they were able to seal the duo of Genma who had made Wind Country their home.

The next century and a half was indulged in chaos. The human faction grew in both numbers and strength as they came able to use and develop ninjutsu. Following their victory over the Genma who ruled Wind Country, the human forces began to help other regions organize and revolt against the Genma who ruled them. In the end, the Genma had been overthrown and sealed, their power granted to human hosts who served as their prisons.
[The First Villages]
The people of Fire Country in year 374 began the construction of an academy to spread their knowledge of ninjutsu, wary of the Genma rising again. In less than 5 years, a village had sprouted around the academy and came to be known as Konohagakure no Sato. To the north west, the people of Rock Country turned a settlement formed around an outpost first erected at the start of the Genma Revolution into the center of a new village titled Iwagakure no Sato (382). Not long after, the people of Wind Country established their village, Sunagakure no Sato in 384.

For nearly 20 years all three of the Hidden Villages peacefully coexisted. This peace was destroyed in 407 when Iwa and Konoha declared war on each other due to economic sanctions Konoha attempted to impose over Iwa due to their practice of using slaves. Over the course of the war, Iwa lost many combatants due to the tactics utilized by Konoha which relied on quantity over quality on the battlefield. The war ended in 410 after Suna entered on the side of Iwa, turning the tide of the ar. An alliance was forged between the two villages that lasted for many years with Konoha remaining a village but having a percentage of its countries crops being sent to both Iwa and Suna at discounted prices.

82 Years Later

The peace forged between the three villages lasted for almost a century before being broken. Konoha, sick of being the weakest village due to losing the war and its consequences, formed a secret alliance with Suna who was tempted by promises of being able to purchase the total amount of discounted crops rather than Iwa getting any. Another war broke out in 944 that ended as a stalemate between Iwa and the alliance of Suna and Konoha. A fragile peace settled over the continent for centuries.
[Second Generation]
Konoha had expanded to include a penal colony on a Water Country island. War criminals, prisoners of war, shinobi, and even violent convicted felons from Konoha were housed on the island. Senju, Haziwara conquered the island by uniting the prison population with his strength and then terraforming the island to be fit to house a village. By 800, Kirigakure no Sato came into existence and by 802 Senju, Haziwara, the Shodaime Mizukage, was dead.

International events simmered down for some time. Lightning Country quietly formed their own hidden village, dubbed Kumogakure no Sato which was completed in 892. Villages were dealing with their own issues rather than having to worry about their neighbors until the issues with slave practices was reignited with Konoha who turned their fury onto Kiri in 905.

Kiri was able to keep Konoha at bay, Fire Country's paltry navy unable to match Kiri in open waters. Konoha was, however, able to destroy Kiri's land bound trade routes with Iwa, bringing a third village into what was now a war. Iwa's ally Suna soon after followed their ally's lead joining the war, turning it into a grave situation for Konoha. This didn't last for long with a secret deal being made between Konoha and Suna that broke Wind Country's ties with Rock Country. The war didn't last long with a ceasefire being declared in 910 on both sides and a cold war settling over the continent.
[The Not So Far Past]

The continent was peaceful for 140 years until, in 1050, the issue of slave practices was reignited. Minor skirmishes between Iwa and Suna turned into Suna declaring war. A year into the war, Kiri entered the war and Konoha right after. Large, bloody battles plagued the continent for almost a decade before the war ended in 1060 with a major depletion of shinobi forces on all four sides. Since then, the continent has known peace.
