Physical Features:
  • Face/head: Kakushigo's shoulder-length black hair is caught in a messy ponytail. He might have once been called cute, perhaps even handsome, but as his features were mangled beyond recognition he no longer lets any see his face. The mask he wears allow for his lidless pure-black eyes to be seen, which appear constantly irritated and on the verge of crying - especially after being doused in 'medicine drops'. Should one remove it, they'll see that Kakushigo's face is mottled by wounds, burns, and even fresh oozing cuts, as well as smears of balm and 'medicine ointment'. As he lacks eyelids, lips and a strip of nose meat, he's not much of a looker.
  • Body: Kakushigo's impeccable posture - he always keeps his back straight and shoulders parallel to his hips - make him cast a figure grander than his six feet of height. He is sickly pale and more lean than muscular, but as he wrapped in bandages this is hardly noticeable.
  • Notable Features: Kakushigo can be easily identified by his oversized feet. And his mask.
Clothing/Accessories:
  • Mask: Pearly white and made of steel, form-fitting so as to not fall even when the forehead protector-like band rips, the jutting over the eyes gives the appearance of a pronounced frown. 民衆の敵 (Enemy of the People) is etched on the forehead in red, and scratched over many times.
  • Flak Jacket: Dark blue, fastened by steel buttons, with white reinforced throat guard and steel-padded shoulder pads. Segmented so as to allow for easier movement. A sewn-in 'pouch bandolier' is set diagonally against the chest. This is where Kakushigo keeps his tools and 'medicine'.
  • Bandages: Clean, white, and decorated with grey faint floral patterns. Full-body. Additional bandages are wrapped around Kakushigo's neck like a poncho.
  • Pants: Brown shinobi pants, reaching down to his calves.
  • Sandals: Lacquered wood.
Personality: A pessimist first and foremost, Kakushigo has no qualms with sharing his misery with the whole world. He doesn't want it to spread, necessarily, but he does find solace when sharing a particular grumble or wrongdoing with someone else. As he is a very anxious person, rarely does he not feel compelled to help out others, even against problems too small or too big for his helping - he is very justice-oriented. That is not to say that he upholds any particular oath, he is somewhat fickle with hierarchies, being quite easy to irritate when made to carry out orders from supposed 'superiors'. It'll take some convincing for him to do them well, however. He is more understanding with criminals, lowlifes and missing-nin than most, having been all of them for the better part of five years.

Kakushigo dislikes showing his face, and will frown at any attempt to remove his mask. This is partly because he thinks of himself as hideous, and because taking the mask off is a laboured and painful process. He'd much rather write - something he quite likes - how he would look like had he not been exiled. He is self-critical to the extreme, which is why he is reticent about accepting help of any sort, which has forced him to be more self-reliant and stressed out than most. Unabashedly a sensitive soul, he is quite fond of art and poetry, but especially love stories.

Kakushigo is very much the sort of person to impose himself on others. Be it uncalled advice, careful guidance, or outright tyranny.

  • Combat Mentality: Battle is best avoided, but in the midst of it Kakushigo makes an effort to think outside the box. At first. As the combat drags on, Kakushigo finds it harder to keep his daring in check. Carefully planned tactics become improvised mishaps, and then the feral lounges of a sicced beast. All the while he'll be constantly taunting, jeering and overall trying to discombobulate his opponent - sometimes coming off as clownish. In the end, it's all about shock and awe.

Gensyruugan:

The Gensyruugan is a doujutsu utilized by those of the Kuruma Clan. Awakened in the heat of passion, the Gensyruugan is revered in Shio no Kuni for its hypnotic prowess. Kuruma Clan members have incredibly developed mirror neurons that feed into their ocular nerve, the Gensyruugan’s inherent ability is to focus this information, allowing Kuruma clan members to perceive the hallucinations experienced by individuals around them. Clan members have developed techniques to focus the Gensyruugan making them able to use sustained eye contact to stimulate the mirror neurons in others, tricking the target’s body into relaxing, and even simulating pain. The strongest Kuruma clan members can invoke full hypnosis, forcing those they make eye contact with to perform certain actions. Each stage of the Gensyruugan is unlocked by a jutsu. The Gensyruugan can be used for for [Chakra Pool] posts in a thread, consecutive or non-consecutive.

Chiton has an replenishing effect. This means that Chiton jutsu passively repair themselves when damaged, at no additional cost to the user. The rate of repairing itself is 1/3rd the speed of the technique rounded up, so a Chiton defense that manifests at 10 speed would repair itself at 4 speed when damaged. This only works for the length of the technique, so maintaining the damage to Chiton until the jutsu expires will stop it from regrowing.

Doing a series of hand seals, the user will clap their hands together, using chakra to boost their cardiac performance, and increasing their speed by +3, however reducing their control by -3 for the 4 post duration of this technique.

After performing the needed seals, the user will cause blood to break through their skin, forming a kunai in their hand. The kunai has [Control] strength, and can be thrown. After impact, if falls into a pool of blood that can then be used for other attacks.

*Bold Clotting
D-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the needed seals, the user will place their hand over an open wound up to five inches wide and two inches deep. After channeling Chiton chakra for a full post, the user will form a superficial blood-clot covering over the wound to prevent further bloodflow from it. While this cover doesn't completely heal the wound, it allows the target's body to recover from the wound naturally without agitation.

*Bathed In
D-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the needed seals, the user will slather blood on their body. By concentrating Chiton chakra in the blood, the user thins it out, allow the user to spread it over a larger area on their body. As a result, the user will look much more wounded and bloodier as a means to trick the opponent.

*Venipuncture
D-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the needed hand seals, the user will get a grip on their target, causing two needles from their palms to lash out into the target, pumping their blood into the target. Follow up techniques can be utilized with this jutsu to attack the opponent from the inside out.

*Red Diamond Clone
C-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the needed seals, the user will channel Chiton chakra into roughly 5 pints of blood. The blood will then take expand and take the shape of the user. This clone is capable of using any chiton jutsu the user knows, using the five pints of blood stored within it as a medium for jutsu requiring blood. The clone can also absorb blood to replenish the 5 pints of blood. If the clone is destroyed while storing 5 pints of blood, the clone will regenerate but will be unable to absorb more blood or use Chiton jutsu. The Clone has stats equal to the user, and lasts for 5 posts.

After performing the needed seals, the user will channel Chiton chakra into a location on their body. From that location a 2ft long spike of chakra will shoot out from under their skin with [Control] strength at [Control] speed. The spike is sharp, and will either recede back into the body after use, or follow up jutsu can be used with it.

C-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the needed hand seals, the user will focus their chakra on a patch of their blood, at least a baseball in circumference, within 25m of their body. From the patch of blood 5 senbon will form, and fire in whatever direction they choose, at [Control] speed, with [Control] strength. This is most commonly used on blood they've gotten onto the enemy, firing directly into their skin.

The user will do a series of hand seals, coating their hands in blood once complete. The next object or person the user touches with either hand will hand ropes of blood grow from the blood on their hands, wrapping around the point of contact. These 4 ropes each hold on with [Control] strength, and can stretch up to 2m from the user. The jutsu lasts for up to 5 posts unless broken.

*Blood Bath
C-Rank Ninjutsu
The user will do the necessary hand seals, then bite their tongue, causing it to bleed. A ball approximately the size of a baseball can then be spat out at [Control] speed, striking with [Control] strength. When it impacts a surface, the ball will explode with [Control] strength over a 1x1x1m area, covering the area in blood for future attacks.

*Grips of War
B-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the needed seals, the user will begin exuding blood from a wound and condense it into a small sphere one foot in diameter. The sphere lasts for up to five posts afterwards. This sphere forms around the hand of the user, but does not deter the user from forming hand seals. By the user's manipulation, the sphere can sprout up to five tendrils at a time that can stretch up to 25 meters in any direction and can move at up to [Control] speed, grabbing onto things with up to [Control] strength.

B-Rank Ninjutsu
After wounding a target with a blood jutsu, the user can do additional seals, causing all the blood used in the jutsu to cause the wound to force itself into the target. This only works for blood directly in contact with a wound, so if the opponent is impaled by a blood spike, and they break the spike, only the portion of the spike still in contact with them would force itself into the wound. This allows them to use jutsu to attack the opponent internally.

The user will do a series of hand seals, focusing on a wound of theirs, or blood on the ground. Once the hand seals are complete, the user will throw their arm across their body. From wherever the blood is originating from, it will grow up, forming into a wall 10m in length and 3m in height. The wall forms at [Control] speed, and strength.

*Revenge
A-Rank Ninjutsu
Once the user has gotten some of their blood inside their target, they'll do a series of hand seals, causing their blood to flow into the targets arms. With a final seal, the blood with burst out of their arms with [Control] strength, which can only be stopped if the target has higher or equal strength otherwise it will break through their skin and mutilating their arms. This leaves huge open wounds in the targets arms and can cause a huge amount of damage.

*Choke Hold
A-Rank Ninjutsu
If the user gets some of their blood on the opponent, they can do a series of hand seals to cause the blood to surge up to the opponent's neck, forming a choker around them. The blood squeezes their necks with [Control] strength. Though the jutsu has no speed, it repairs itself at 1/3rd [Control] in speed, forcing the target to repeatedly break the choker to stop it from coming back at choking them. This can be dangerous, and distracting. The choker lasts for 5 posts unless completely destroyed.

*Bloody Baron
S-Rank Ninjutsu
The user will do a series of hand seals, focusing chiton chakra onto themselves. Suddenly their entire body will begin leaking blood from all their pores, forming a film of chiton chakra over their bodies. The armor becomes hard, and glimmering crimson in color. The armor has [Control] strength, protecting the user from being damaged. Additionally, the user can will small spikes, 2ft in length, to shoot out from any point on the armor with [Control] speed at any time they please, striking with [Control] strength before receding back into the armor. If damaged, the armor repairs itself, as most Chiiton jutsu do, making it a very effective defense. This jutsu lasts five posts and during this time, the user cannot cast any other jutsu

*[Genjutsu • When Pigs Fly]
D-Ranked Illusion Genjutsu
A rather simple genjutsu that is put into place when the user says a statement ending in "When Pigs Fly". Seconds later, anyone who hears the user say that will see several pigs with full hawk wings fly past, just a few feet above the user and the victim’s head, serving as a somewhat confusing distraction.

*[Genjutsu • Pins and Needles]
D-Ranked Illusion Genjutsu
After performing the hand seals and pricking the opponent with some sort of small weapon (usually senbon), the opponent feels their arms and legs fall asleep. It feels as if the blood flow to these appendages has basically stopped, making their movements a tad sluggish and just all around uncomfortable. This jutsu doesn’t really hinder a person, but it makes everything they do feel off. For those who are attuned to the way their body feels during battle, it can be extremely distracting. Lasts 3 posts.

*[Genjutsu • Smell Of The Deceased]
D-Ranked Illusion Genjutsu
After performing the necessary hand seals, any victim that sees the user preforming the hand seals will be induced under the genjutsu. This causes the target to begin to smell rotting flesh and decaying bodies. The jutsu can cause nausea and vomiting from the target, depending on how sensitive their sense of smell is. The smell of the dead can also cause some mental stress on the target. This genjutsu lasts for three (3) posts.

*[Genjutsu • Paranoid]
D-Ranked Illusion Genjutsu
The user will do a series of hand seals, then whistle. Anyone who hears the whistle will be captured in this genjutsu. For the following 4 posts, the target will see a shadow in the corner of their eyes, constantly shifting out of view when they attempt to look at it.

D-Ranked Illusion Genjutsu
The user will do a series of hand seals, then within the next post, snap their fingers. Anyone who hears the snapping will hear an explosion in the distance behind them. This works as an effective distraction, or a scare tactic, if properly utilized.

*[Genjutsu • Doubt]
C-Ranked Status Genjutsu
The user will do a series of hand seals, then whistle, initiating the genjutsu in anyone who hears the whistle. For the next three posts, the victims of this technique will feel tinges of doubt when listening to other people talk. While the doubt isn't strong, it creates a slight feeling that can be used to dissuade them from following instructions of other people if utilized properly.

*[Genjutsu • Demonic Illusion • Hell Viewing]
C-Ranked Illusion Genjutsu
This is a genjutsu technique that causes its target to see a horrifying vision. The ninja will perform some hand seals and make eye contact with the target. Once cast, the world will appear normal to the target until they see the illusion. The illusion is at the discretion of the user. However, they can only make a stationary image, or a visual loop, not a controllable visual illusion. Examples would be a decapitated head on a table, or one of their friends running in circles on fire. This illusions may only last up to 4 posts, or until the user ends the jutsu themselves. As a note, this only effects sight.

*[Genjutsu • Burning to Death]
C-Ranked Illusion Genjutsu
This is a genjutsu technique which can be used in quite a few ways. The user forms a hand seal, and as long as the opponent(s) see it, then the genjutsu will begin. The user and the opponent(s) will both light on fire and start to burn, from the feet up to the head, in the opponent's mind. The opponent will normally start to panic and try to get rid of the fire, especially since they feel as if they were in actual pain. This genjutsu lasts for 4 posts and will not appear to be able to be extinguished, no matter what the victim does. The illusion is very static, in the sense that it doesn't change with the environment, it merely creates an illusory flame and pain.

*[Genjutsu • Reverse Hypnosis]
C-Ranked Status Genjutsu
This is a three post genjutsu. To start the genjutsu, the ninja does the hand seals that are needed and then places a hand on the target. Until the genjutsu ends the target is able to remember a lot more about their past and has a lighter barrier over their consciousness making it easier for them to spill information. This doesn’t weaken their will, however, meaning if they are aware it’s a genjutsu, they are more than capable of using Kai.

*[Genjutsu • Dull Pain]
C-Ranked Status Genjutsu
The user does the needed hand seals, and then locks eyes with the target to trap the target in the genjutsu. For the next 10 posts, any pain that the target feels as if nothing really happened, effectively lessening all pain and nerve responses. The target would still be damaged, but any damage done to them would feel as though it is far less severe than it actually is, and as such they will usually overestimate their own stamina.

*[Genjutsu • Fear]
B-Ranked Status Genjutsu
The user will do a series of hand seals, the wink at their target. Should the target see them wink, they'll be caught in the genjutsu. For the next 4 posts, the target will have a sense of fear originating from the user and things they do. If the user takes a step forward, the target will be more inclined to take a step back, threats will have a higher efficacy, and they'll be more inclined to simply do what they can to avoid having to fight the user.

*[Genjutsu • Communicate]
B-Ranked Overlay Genjutsu
After performing the necessary hand seals, the user will place a hand on their target, initiating this overlay. The overlay lasts for 4 posts, transporting them to an open field. The sky is a mix between day and night, with both the sun, and stars visible in the sky. The user and his target will be sitting in the field, cross legged, where they can talk. Jutsu will fail, they have no weapons on their person, and all their physical stats are set to 5, making combat nearly impossible.

Lost somewhere in the middle third of a thirty-strong brood, when Kakushigo left home it wasn't supposed to last for more than a day or two. All he wanted was to seek out adventure, and dine on the fish gut mince his sister - the one sane girl among kiddy brothers - had so carefully prepared. So Kaku was more than a bit unprepared when while plodding through reeds around dad's hunting lodge he chanced upon his old man's body. The shock made him skid on mud and hit his head right on the corpse's before the two were dragged away by the mud-lashing river. To this day the Kuruma clan still think that Kakushigo and his father simply vanished, spirited away by some cruel pond spirit.

The river flowed mightily but Kaku's father proved buoyant enough. The son kept on clinging until strength left him, exhausted and broken well after he had no more tears to cry. All that remained was the grim determination to at least die next to his father, who had kept him fed and well-loved for five years. Understandably, Kakushigo was quite distressed as he could no longer stave off sleep. What if he woke up away from father? What if he did not wake up at all? He slept dreamlessly for a long while.

Waking up, Kakushigo expected to see either the blue sky or some daimyo palace under the sea. Instead, he had his back rested on hard wood and his body covered by a raggedy blanket. To his side was an old woman, as short and pudgy as old women come. She explained - with an accent he found too hard to understand - something or other. Probably about how she had found him, and whatever remained of dad. As Kakushigo tried to speak only phlegm came out, and he was shushed back to sleep by the old lady.

For weeks to come the boy began understanding some things. That he was far away from home, in a moulding rickety house, in a place too cold and foggy for the blanket and him. The old lady of course took pains to help him, giving him new clothes - Kirigakure clothes -, as well as the daily spoonful of cod liver oil to help with the sniffles. Her name, Shinsetsu, would be one that Kakushigo would hold dear for the rest of his life. She taught him the language, as well as to make himself useful around the house. Kakushigo relished in the time spent together, and Shinsetsu thought it good that the boy didn't mind the discipline. As a former ninja, she was naturally keen on passing down some of her virtues. Her children had strayed, swallowed up by contractual intrigue, but hopefully Kakushigo would take to the arts without falling prey. His clan name, however, didn't sound familiar. The Kuruma were probably some north water upstarts.

Kakushigo would never get to learn what had made Shinsetsu an outcast, banned from the city but not its slums. He thought she was simply too good in the medical arts, and that one or all of the Five Families - who were like normal families but bigger - were jealous of her talent. When asked, Shinsetsu would always use the same trick: taking Kakushigo through a meandering story that, while extremely interesting to the youth, completely made him forget his question. He didn't like feeling duped, so he quickly gave up on trying to know.

Fortunately, Shinsetsu was not so tight-lipped with her wealth of ninjutsu. The kid saw the classes as chances to impress, justify to his new mother that she was not wasting her money on a lazy troutling. Unnecessary as this fear was - he was unconditionally loved and supported - for ten years Kakushigo felt this pressure rising. Money came and went, it was a fickle thing, but Shinsetsu would always grow more pale and sickly. First her hands wouldn't stop shaking, weakness would come and settle for entire days, but it was only when she couldn't stand any longer that the old woman accepted what Kaku had urged since the start. It'd be better if Shinsetsu let go of the practice - she wasn't paid her worth anyway -, and in her place Kakushigo became the breadwinner. It was with a heavy heart that Shinsetsu let Kakushigo take up dockwork, a task so dangerous that only the poorest dregs were willing to risk.

Under pitiful Karagata wages, Kakushigo spent months hauling crates of Kawazaiwa crops and Muramasa weapons into and off ships, wary of Hirohito union busters. His work, his silence, earned him a slightly more well-payed position. The Shiimu family dealt in the most precious and dangerous cargo - slaves - and men were always wanted to help corralling the foreign folk to the market. Kakushigo hated this, he found it vile and repugnant, and the whip that was given to him as a badge of office - to threaten and force the shackled - was instead used on the officer that had just given it to him. Kakushigo beat the man with the whip and when it broke it was with his fists that he continued.

When the guards came it was too late, Kakushigo had killed the man and their bloods had mingled. This proved ample munition, his Chiton release was sudden and powerful enough to destroy the some of the slaves' shackles. The ensuing riot came violently and it was as quickly quelled, choking on ash and beaten half-dead Kakushigo was summarily locked up. His time in jail he has largely forgotten, remembering only the scraping of hooks and the snapping of cartilage and bone. Shinsetsu said that when he was rescued she couldn't bear to look at his face, that she thought him dead when his eyes wouldn't close or move. Turns out the torturers only cut off his eyelids. Recognizing the mask he wore as a ninja torture device she decided it'd be best to keep it, as a reminder of what Kirigakure had done to him. Truth is, however strong was Shinsetsu's love for the boy, her hatred for the city flowed much deeper.

Having escaped the city Shinsetsu collapsed, and Kakushigo carried her weight despite his broken body. They would travel together for months - eking a life out of hunting, robbing and begging. The life on the road proved too harsh for Shinsetsu, she insisted time and time again to be left behind or go without eating, but Kakushigo held on to her regardless. Finally passing away in her sleep, Shinsetsu's body was weighed to the bottom of a lily pad pond - her favourite flower.

Since his mother's death Kakushigo has been left to wander and ponder on life. Musings on power dynamics have come as easily as plans to peel the gild off a statue, but his largely hermit-like life has left him wanting on social situations.

I'm a big fan of this history, so I almost wanted to let it pass, but gotta keep my lore in fact.

The Kuruma have existed for centuries, and would be known to the major villages, including Kiri, so theres no way a boy from the clan would end up in the village unbothered

Secondary, Kiri is a closed society (because ninjas), and doesn't allow outsiders to immigrate in. It's unlikely she'd get to bring some random child in, and begin teaching the child ninjutsu none-the-less.

Thirdly, theres no escaping jail in Kirigakure. No break ins/outs. Chakra use is restricted, all that. If it was being done IC, no issue, but probably not going to sign off on a jail break within the village in a history.

If being attached to Kiri is unimportant to you, you could easily do this exact same history for a minor country (especially one of the other countries in the South like the Land of Floods that has a combative relationship with The Land of Tides.). If being attached to Kiri is important, I would suggest starting out as a village nin and playing out the end of the history IC.
