[Clan] Kinoko

Post by Archives » Sat May 12, 2018 10:06 am

Type: Clan
Country: Hirachi to Umi no Kuni - The Land of Plains and Sea
Size: Medium, 15 - 25 families
Traits: All Kinoko clan members have dark skin and pale, seemingly lifeless and faded eyes with no apparent pupils. Additionally, all Kinoko clan members have growing from their bodies fungal growths. These growths vary in size, type and color but always progressively cover the Kinoko's body as they get older.
Traditions: The Kinoko clan's behavior varies greatly between age groups. The elders are a naturally secretive and reclusive, keeping to themselves with almost ascetic seclusion. They actively choose not to interact with other clans, families or anyone who isn't a Kinoko as a general rule of thumb. The clan asceticism isn't mandated by any means but is instead a collective habit amongst the elder generation due to their fungal growths which have progressed to the point where it is impossible to go out in public without attracting stares without aid of a transformation jutsu. Younger members of the clan are polar opposites, and are in fact encouraged to be curious. To explore to their hearts' content while they are still able to do so freely without the impediment of an exaggerated fungal growth.

As a result of the older members being reclusive the Kinoko are actually a very prolific clan when it comes to their own capabilities. They have a rich history with experimentation and have yielded many results because of this experimentation, creating everything from poisons to medicines to a renewable supply of food. They are almost entirely mycologists by their very nature and have a deep understanding of fungal growth, harvesting and breeding. They are more often than not medical specialists, trained by the previous generation, who chose to use their kekkei genkai for the benefits of others, trying to share the gift of their goddess with the world. Their inquisitive and experimental nature combined with a vast array of possible development means that a Kinoko clanmember has the potential to be any sort of individual that they please and will likely see good results.

The Kinoko are a spiritual people and believe that the progenitor of their clan was touched by a goddess uncountable generations ago, gifting them with the abilities that they have to this day. As such, all Kinoko have a deep respect for fungal life of all sorts almost to the point of worship and viewing their own bodies as blessed despite the often alien and horrifying configurations that their bodies can take. Additionally, the clan is a matriarchal one, the head of the clan always being a female Kinoko without exception because of this spiritual belief they hold, the belief extending to thinking that females of the clan are closer to the goddess than the males.

Reproduction for Kinoko clan members is not the same as it is for other clans. They do not engage in sex to reproduce typically, although they have the ability to, but instead undergo a ritual in which an adult member of the clan, of at least 18 years of age, is paired with an older and more developed member of the clan. This ritual involves the pair being placed in a dark, damp room which is specialized for this purpose alone together for a period of up to 6 hours. During this time, the pair release spores from their bodies which embed themselves into the fungal flesh as well as on the walls and floor of the room itself. These spores feed off of the chakra of the host they land on and grow rapidly with it, blooming into a mushroom or mushrooms which share traits from both participants. These mushrooms can also grow from the room itself, although this is much rarer in occurrence. After a period of three weeks, the mushroom, or mushrooms, is carefully harvested from the host's body and planted in a specialized room which encourages fungal growth where it will remain, carefully watched over and protected, for a full 9 months, during which time an infant Kinoko develops from this initial mushroom. The nature of this ritual means that both males and females can participate in it and yield the same results, making members of the clan strangely hermaphroditic. This ritual is not mandatory by any means, but is the more traditional way for members of the clan to reproduce none the less. This ritual is also another reason why the clan is that of a matriarchy, as it is typically women of the clan who look after the developing Kinoko children in these specialized chambers.

Influence: Within The Land of Plains and Sea, the Kinoko's influence is minimal. A clan of scattered households all along the north and north western borders of the country, they try to keep to themselves as much as possible, preferring not to deal with the far more aggressive denizens of the country at large. They do occasionally move into the country in order to barter supplies from neighboring families and natives, though their interactions are always minimal and they try to be as discreet as possible, often sending younger, less developed Kinoko members on these sorts of envoy missions so as to not draw attention to their fungal forms.
HistoryShow
The Kinoko clan have seemingly always existed as fringe families along the northern and north western coast of the Land of Plains and Sea, either ostracized by other natives or choosing self isolation it isn't entirely sure which, but the clan as a whole had never before lived in a singular place together. Small families or at most tiny villages would live with each other miles apart from any other Kinoko clan member let alone anyone else. This self isolation had gone on for generations and had left the clan a separated but knowledgeable bunch of people about their own people. Their origins can be traced back to a collective belief that their clan progenitor, who's name as since been lost to time and poor documentation as word of the legend traveled from mouth to mouth for generation after generation, was in fact blessed by a goddess, giving them their fungal forms.

Naturally, the aggressive peoples of the Land of Plains and Sea lead to several raids against their people, leading to the Kinoko developing a passive attitude towards their more aggressive neighbors and eventually simply allowing them to take from them rather than try to fight them off and risk losing a family member or loved one. For years and generations this was the norm for these strange, hermetic people. In their isolation they learned much over the years and through various 'cultural exchanges' between members of their own kin but never had the training or the warrior mentality that the natives further to the south possessed.

Requirements:
 • Members of the Kinoko clan have a very strong affinity with both Suiton and Doton and must start with an affinity for one of these.
 • Kinoko clan members are not required to be medical specialists though it is against the norm if they aren't. As such, a specified reason must be given in their history that details the choice not to specialize in Iijutsu or Medicine Concentrion usage in conjunction with their Kekkei Genkai.
 • Kinojutsu techniques fall under their own pyramid as if they were an actual element.
Kekkei Genkai:
Shinkin-niku (Fungus Flesh):
Believed to be blessed by a Goddess, the Kinoko's Kekkei Genkai gives them the capability of growing mushrooms from their bodies and their surroundings and to produce large amounts of spores from their tenketsu as well as any fungi the Kinoko member creates through an energy source they call Mycorrhiza, which would be identified by the five villages as chakra. These fungi and their spores can be utilized in a number of different ways with techniques of all sorts, making members of this clan highly versatile. Unless otherwise specified, mushrooms created through Kinoko techniques constantly produce spores from their gills. These spores are the basis of many Kinoko techniques, but have a weakness in that they are easily burned, washed off or blown away.

Kinoko clan members vary wildly in appearance depending on age, birth, and even their chosen specialization to some extent with older clan members having more of their body covered with larger and more diverse forms of fungi. As such, while each member share common traits of dark skin and pale, faded eyes the rest of their appearance can vary wildly, making it so that no two Kinoko share much commonality in how they look, their uniqueness only growing with time.
Fungal GrowthsShow
In this spoiler, the Kinoko member is encouraged to describe what fungi is growing off of their body and where, going into more detail than they may have done when describing the character's appearance or providing pictures of specific fungal types on their body.

~Lesser Spore Cloud
D-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza throughout their body before releasing a thick cloud of spores that cover an area equal to the user's [Control] stat in meters. Inhaling these spores is comparable to inhaling smoke or ash and can cause heavy, labored coughing to anyone caught within it unexpectedly. The cloud lasts for two posts or until cleared by some means such as a fuuton technique. These spores can be used for other Kinojutsu.

~Mushroom Genesis
D-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it to a point within a number of meters equal to their Control stat in meters at a Speed of [Control]. From this point mushrooms grow at a Speed of [Control], covering an area of 1 meter in diameter. These mushrooms have a Strength of [Control] and are constantly creating spores. These spores can be used for other Kinojutsu. The user cannot make these mushrooms grow on metal, stone, concrete or similar materials.

~Spring-step Mushroom
D-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it to a point within a number of meters equal to their Control stat in meters at a Speed of [Control]. From this point a single, large mushroom, the cap roughly three feet in diameter with a sturdy, one foot tall stem will sprout. This mushroom sprouts with [Control] Speed and Strength and is constantly creating spores. These spores can be used for other Kinojutsu. This mushroom is springy and elastic and can be jumped on to propel the user in any direction with +3 Speed at the cost of -3 Taijutsu while airborne. This mushroom is capable of propelling individuals or objects up to 10 meters.

~Fungal Scrying
D-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it to an existing fungus within a number of meters equal to their Control stat in meters from them. From then on, up to 3 posts, the user can see through this fungus as if it were their own eyes allowing them to see whatever is within the immediate area, able to see as far as their eyes normally would without the aid of other enhancing techniques.

~Fungal Eavesdropping
D-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it to an existing fungus within a number of meters equal to their Control stat in meters from them. From then on, up to 3 posts, the user can hear through this fungus as if it were their own ears allowing them to hear whatever is within the immediate area, able to hear as far as 5 meters away from the fungus.

~Mycelium Spy Network
C-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and touches the ground, creating a wide-spreading mesh of mycelium just beneath the surface which travels up to a distance equal to the user's Control stat in meters in diameter at a Speed of [Control] and with [Control] Strength. For every 5 meters the mycelium travels, a small white mushroom will sprout. These mushrooms have a Strength of [Control] and are constantly creating spores. These spores can be used for other Kinojutsu.

~Gill Chakram
C-ranked Kinojutsu
To use this technique, the user must first pluck the cap off of a mushroom. After they have the user will gather Mycorrhiza and send it into the cap, flattening it and sharpening the edges. The user may then throw this flattened cap like any other projectile for a similar effect. Performing this technique causes the mushroom cap to cease creating spores. The cap has a hardness of [Control]

~Cap Shield
C-ranked Kinojutsu
Prerequisite: Spring-step Mushroom
The usr gathers Mycorrhiza at a point on their body of their choosing and sprouts a large, 3 foot diameter mushroom cap with a 6 inch stalk at a Speed of [Control]. This cap has a Strength of [Control]. Striking this cap with a Strength less than the Strength of the cap will cause whatever struck it to bounce off with equal Strength.

~Draining Cloud
C-ranked Kinojutsu
Prerequisite: Lesser Spore Cloud
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it into a cloud of spores within an area in meters equal to their Control stat. From then on, anyone who comes into contact with the cloud of spores except for the user will suffer from a -1 endurance debuff for as long as they are in contact with the cloud. This technique lasts for two posts.

~Elizabethan Mushroom
C-ranked Kinojutsu
Prerequisite: 10 Endurance
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and creates a thick, white mushroom from their body. Upon consumption of this mushroom, the body will begin to heal itself in a regenerative fashion. The rate of regeneration depends on the user's Control stat, as specified by the standard regeneration table. This mushroom is only capable of healing Moderate wounds and lesser.

~Voracious Mycelium
B-ranked Kinojutsu
Prerequrisite: Target must have fungal spores on them.
The use gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it into a patch of spores on the target. The spores will then grow into dense mycelium at a Speed of [Control], burrowing into and breaking apart whatever the mycelium is on with [Control] Strength.

~Binding Mycelium
B-ranked Kinojutsu
Prerequisite: Target must have fungal spores on them.
The user gathers Mycorrhiza into their hand. After the user has done so, they will attempt to touch a target which has spores on it. If they do the Mycorrhiza will transfer over to the spores, causing the spores to grow dense, fibrous mycelium at a Speed of [Control]. These mycelium fibers will wrap around the target and bind them with a Strength of [Control], completely covering the target.

~Greater Spore Cloud
B-ranked Kinojutsu
Prerequisite: Lesser Spore Cloud
The user gathers Mycorrhiza throughout their body before releasing a thick cloud of spores that cover an area equal to twice the user's Control stat in meters. Inhaling these spores is comparable to inhaling smoke or ash and can cause heavy, labored coughing to anyone caught within it unexpectedly. The cloud lasts for four posts or until cleared by some means such as a fuuton technique. These spores can be used for other Kinojutsu.

~Mushroom Colossus
A-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it to a mushroom within an area equal to the user's Endurance in meters of them. This mushroom then grows rapidly into a giant, 10 meter tall bipedal, biarmed mushroom at [Control] Speed. This mushroom constantly creates spores while it is active and can move autonomously and has the following stats:

Strength: 50
Speed: 5
Endurance: 25

~Ravenous Cloud
A-ranked Kinojutsu
Prerequisite: Draining Cloud
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it into a cloud of spores within an area in meters equal to their [Control] stat. From then on, anyone who comes into contact with the cloud of spores except for the user will suffer from a -5 endurance debuff for as long as they are in contact with the cloud. This technique lasts for four posts.

~Thirsty Mycophants
A-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers Mycorrhiza and sends it to a fungus within an area equal to the user's [Control] stat in meters. This fungus will then begin to rapidly drain the life out of any plant life which it is attached to, turning it into a withered husk of its former self and depleting its Strength, if it has any, by -5 for four posts.

~Deep Colony Emergence
S-ranked Kinojutsu
The user gathers a large quantity Mycorrhiza and sends it into the ground beneath them, causing a dense growth of mycelium to spread out in a 60 meter area and 5 meters deep all throughout that area at a Speed of [Control]. One post later, the ground will begin to shake as mushrooms and fungi of all sorts erupt from the mycelium filled earth, sprouting into a colony of fungus at and erupting upwards with [Control] Strength. The mushrooms created through this technique come in all sizes, ranging from tiny six inch tall mushrooms which litter the ground to titanic 30 meter tall mushrooms. Fungi of all sorts hang from between the mushrooms and cover the ground. Every mushroom within this area produces thick spores constantly, making it a thick, smoggy haze within the area in which the colony resides that heavily reduces visibility and inhaling these spores is comparable to inhaling smoke or ash and can cause heavy, labored coughing to anyone within the colony who is nor prepared to deal with them. These spores can be cleared by means of fuuton ninjutsu or similar techniques but will be replaced by more spores as long as there are mushrooms to create them, similar to the Mist passive.
