Personality:
  • General: Ken is very loud and brash, always trying his best to be a real man’s man; he drinks, he fights, and is very loyal to those he considers to be his family. All of his machismo is really just a cover for a very tender and fragile heart. He carries with him many burdens and does his best to cope with his demons in a variety of ways. He’s made it a personal mission of his to protect those who can’t protect themselves, and to try and heal all who need it, be it physically, mentally, or spiritually.
  • Hopes/Dreams: Ken’s greatest dream is to fulfill a vow to his late parents that he would carry on their life’s work, and use their holistic medicines and healing practices to bring help to those who have been failed by conventional means throughout the world.
  • Fears: Ken’s fears suffering, and being unable to help innocents who are suffering. He also fears his style of medicines and healing being shunned by the world, and being written off as a hack or a fake medicine man.
  • Combat Mentality: Ken is a healer at heart, and as such, prefers to play a supporting medic role while in the heat of combat. Still, when the situation calls for it, Ken is a fearless and aggressive warrior, using his overwhelming strength and his iron club to bash in the skulls of his enemies.

Skull SplitterShow
Skull Splitter is the given name of the spiked iron club that was “gifted” to Nagatomo Ken during his early samurai days. Usually strapped across his back by a thin chain, it is roughly 4 feet from end to end, with the club end being 11 inches in diameter. It’s just a regular iron club with no special abilities. (Pictured on character picture in app)
Medical KitShow
A makeshift med-kit assembled by Ken, it’s an assortment of tools carried in a leather bag which he keeps strapped to his waist during missions. It includes:
- Gauze Roll (30 feet)
- Medical Needle (x4)
- Sutures (20 foot roll)
- Smelling Salts (2 packages)
Yuto’s Miracle OintmentShow
The staple of Ken’s brand of medicine, his Miracle Ointment is a recipe taught to him by his father which he improved upon throughout his travels. An amalgamation of various herbs and oils, this ointment is a fairly viscous oil that’s olive green in color with a minty aroma. Applied topically, this ointment will heal minor wounds (as defined here) in 2 posts. It is also effective at neutralizing the effects of weak poisons (D-rank and below) that are also topical in application. Ken carries a 12 oz jar in his Medical Kit, which covers approximately 6 square feet.

Oni-no-Kanabo:
Oni-no-Kanabo
Requires [Hafted Weapons] and [Rigid Structure] Concentrations
Translated at “Demon with an Iron Club”, Oni-no-Kanabo is a common idiom which Nagatomo Ken adopted as the informal name for his style of fighting. This style is a collective of techniques learned mostly through years of experience, where Ken overwhelms his enemies with his great size and strength. Though the majority of the techniques seem simple and brutish, the real skill of this style lies in Ken’s ability to strategically take hits in order to dish out heavy damage.
Might of the Ogre
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Having trained extensively with their weapon of choice, the user can now wield the usually abnormally heavy object with one hand without suffering a decrease in speed or a drop in strike accuracy.

Demonic Deflection
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Taking advantage of the size and bluntness of their weapon, the user of this technique will essentially use their club as a shield, deflecting small weaponry and other smaller weapons with ease. The inherent flaw in this technique is that the large weapon being used defensively highly limits mobility, leaving them susceptible to speedier attacks.

Unholy Smite
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
A simple technique, the user will simply raise their club above their head and swing it downward at full force in one swift motion, combining their own strength with the weight of their weapon to deliver a devastating strike.

Mighty Roar of the Ogre
D-Rank Taijutsu Stance
The user of this technique will let out their most vicious battle cry in order to strike fear in their opponents and boost the morale of their comrades. This roar also causes a surge of adrenaline, making the user stronger for a short period of time while lowering their mental clarity, granting them a +3 boost in Strength, and a -3 drop in their Instinct. This boost lasts for 5 posts.

Will of Stone
C-Rank Taijutsu Stance
After firmly planting their feet in the ground and inhaling deeply, the user of this technique will take a deep breath and focus on their opponent. While in this stance, the user will remain firmly in place, completely unmoved by any force less than 2/3rds of their Strength, and able to ignore minor injuries sustained in the period when this stance is held. This allows them to temporarily ignore injuries and other forces for them to counterattack at full strength.

Raging Strike of the Oni
C-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Shifting the focus of their attacks from their enemy or enemies, the user of this technique will instead shift their focus to their weapon. When facing an attacking enemy, or in some cases a defending one, they will swing their club either vertically or horizontally, in a way that will cause the weapon to absorb the majority of the force as opposed to simply parrying it (striking a spear or sword at the tip, a staff at the middle). The aim of this technique is to break their opponents weapon, or at the very least damage it beyond use.
Arts of MedicineShow
Arts of Medicine:
Arts of Medicine
This user has educated themselves in traditional medicine, and is able to treat and care for wounds in methods taught to medicine men and doctors that don't utilize chakra.

Learners of this discipline have learn the most effective manner to diagnose a patient, starting at the head, and assessing for head wounds, then moving down through the torso, both arms, the groin area, both legs, then the back. Those who learn this discipline will be able to account for any wounds that present with physical symptoms on a patient.

While reseating a dislocated joint is usually accompanied by instant relief and drastically expedites the healing process, a broken bone will require further medical attention.

*[Medicinal Style • Field Transfusion]
B-rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Assuming they have the approriate materials, the user is able to set up a field transfusion, taking blood from one person, and transfusing it into their patient, adding to their blood volume and potentially extending their life. A Field Tranfusion can extend the life of a patient by up to 3 posts.

*[Medicinal Style • Priority]
B-rank Taijutsu Discipline
When faced with multiple patients, one who has mastered this discipline is able to rapidly assess multiple patients and determine priority of their individual injuries, and the totality of their injuries to determine which require the highest priorities, and which can survive with delayed care. An additional benefit of this discipline is that one who has mastered it is always able to determine whether a patient is alive or dead, unless they are under the effects of A-rank or higher techniques designed to make them appear dead.

*[Medicinal Style • Comfort]
B-rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Through the use of acupuncture and their knowledge of pressure points, the user is able to quickly apply a series of pricks, leaving the needles in, that dulls pain in localized areas of the body, or even the entire body. This method only isolates pain receptors, not other receptors, allowing someone under the effects of this technique to continue to function. The pain dulling effects will last for up to 5 posts, at which points the needles will have to be removed then replaced.

History
Historical AccountsShow

Nagatomo Ken was born somewhere inside of Steppe Country, though the exact location of this place has been lost to history. He was the youngest of 7 children, the son of his tribe’s leader and one of his wives. The tribe was one of the much smaller nomadic tribes from Steppe Country, ranging somewhere between 30-45 throughout the years, and lacked the foothold or resources that some of the larger or more well-connected tribes had.

Life was relatively simple for the tribe, and although he doesn’t remember any of it, he was a happy kid. When he was about 2 years old, tragedy struck his tribe. One of its members had developed small red blisters on their torso, which slowly began to spread across their body. Deciding it was perhaps just some minor side affect from a bug bite or perhaps some sort of allergic reaction, the tribe shaman decided it wasn’t worth an extensive treatment, stating that given enough time, it would go away on its own. Little did he know that his decision would seal the fate of everybody in the tribe, and completely reshape Ken’s.

Within one week, the disease had swept across the tribe, claiming a handful of leaves and leaving the rest covered in painful red blisters. While the lucky few died early on in the process, a handful of unlucky ones had begun to develop a seemingly advanced form of the disease, as their skin began to peel off and they were consumed by an uncontrollable rage. Within 2 weeks of the initial outbreak, the tribe had lost half of its members to the plague, with the rest of the members starting to feel the early signs of infection.

Word had spread in the nearby regions of the country about the tribe who had essentially turned into living zombies. In fear of their own safety, the surrounding tribes made a “kill on sight” agreement, forming a deadly allegiance that forced whatever remaining members of the tribe to scatter into various regions of the country, grasping on to the fleeting moments of their life. As luck, or fate, or whatever powers that be would have it, word of the plague had continued to spread, going far beyond Steppe Country, and the story of the plague was now being whispered upon in various sowing circles and taverns across the land, eventually reaching the ears of a man by the name of Nagatomo Yuto and his wife, Hana.

Yuto and Hana were an elderly couple from the Land of Miracles. Like many of the citizens of the country, they were healers, both classically-trained medics who had discovered holistic forms of medicine and had focused the majority of their later years to developing their craft. They had made it their life’s mission to travel around the world and provide healing and medicinal services to those of low means and to those who had been failed by traditional medicines. Upon hearing of the outbreak, they knew where they had to go.

By the time Yuto and Hana had reached the Steppe Country, the infected had either been killed by one of the neighboring tribes, succumbed to the disease, or gone deep into the mountains or woods to hide. Determined to help those that remained, they paid one of the neighboring tribes to escort them around the area in hopes of coming across one of the members. After about a few days of searching, the elderly couple came across a woman and her young son hiding in a tiny cave. The woman’s skin was almost completely gone, her eyes completely bloodshot, and hardly resembled a human anymore. She grunted at the couple and their escorts in a hostile manner but was far too diseased to put up any sort of a fight. Her son, on the other hand, was naked, filthy and very clearly malnourished, but showed very minimal signs of infection. His skin was slightly jaundiced, with only a few red blisters covering the backs of his hands and his arms.

Having found what they came for, Yuto and Hana went to work, trying a variety of medicinal recipes and concoctions. For about a week they tried a number of remedies, with some of them having an effect, only for the disease to return the morning after. Though they tried their best to save the infected woman, she finally succumbed to her disease. All that was left was the boy, unknowingly so resilient, now orphaned by a force of nature. Realizing that whatever they had brought with them was not enough, and in need of more time and resources, the elderly couple decided to adopt the young boy as their own and bring him home with them to the Land of Miracles. As a nod to his strength, they gave the boy his name. From here on forward, he’d be known as Nagatomo Ken, son of Yuto and Hana.

His arrival in the Land or Miracles was accompanied by an upswing in good fortune. After about a year or so of work by his adopted parents, his disease was finally stabilized, to the point where he showed no obvious signs so long as he was consistent with herbal remedies and other medications. As a side effect of his disease, he would have occasional outbursts of uncontrollable rage, but as he got older, these became less and less frequent.

By the time Ken was a young teenager, he was a strong, healthy young man, who became pretty well known around his neighborhood for his easily distinguishable features. He took after his parents, learning their craft, and from a young age developing, experimenting and improving upon his own remedies and some already existing recipes. Whenever his parents would travel, he was always very eager to go with them, believing in his parent’s goals and philosophy whole heartedly. He knew that it was his destiny to carry on their legacy, and that given his own personal history, it was his duty to pay their good deed forward. Unfortunately for him, the time to carry forward their legacy came much sooner than expected, in the most tragic of ways.

When he was 16, Ken and his now very-old parents were on their way back home from a humanitarian mission when they decided to stop and set up camp for the night. While he and his family slept, a small troop of samurai from one of the major clans stumbled upon their caravan. Although they were given orders from their superiors to not harm innocent civilians, the troop leader decided that the disappearance of a caravan full of foreigners wouldn’t draw the attention of anybody in the immediate area, and that the loot they’d gather could make all of them a good chunk of money on the side. So, with little discussion, he gave his men orders to attack. Ken awoke to the screams of his mother. He immediately jumped out from his bed, only to be quickly knocked unconscious.

When he came too, he awoke laying in a mud-filled ditch. He was delirious at first, but the memory of what just happened surged back into his mind. He couldn’t remember any faces, or names, but he knew that everything his parents had built was gone. The thought then occurred to him; what about his parents? Immediately he cried out for his parents, stumbling to his feet in panic. As he tried to walk out of the ditch, he tripped over a large lump, causing to roll back down into the ditch. Horror filled his face as he realized what he had tripped over; his mother and his father, both of whom lay there cold and silent, large gashes across stretching across their blood-stained necks.

Ken laid in that ditch for hours, crying until his body had no more tears to give him. When he couldn’t cry anymore, he just continued to lie there in complete disbelief. He knew the story of his birth, and where he had come from. His mother and father saved him from becoming nothing and in turn became his everything. Now, his everything was taken away.

After what felt like an entire day, but was perhaps closer to a few days, Ken had made a vow to himself. His vow was not one of revenge, but a vow that he would not let his parent’s life work disappear with their deaths, and that he would find a way to carry forward their legacy, despite having nothing.

In the following weeks, Ken wandered from town to town, working a multitude of odd jobs, from a field hand, to a security guard, to a potato peeler. He saved what money he could, and quickly moved onto the next town. He couldn’t bear the thought of going back to the Land of Miracles without his parents, and hoped that somewhere along his journey, something would call out to him to point him in the right direction. For 10 years, Ken wandered the myriad of countries throughout the world, working wherever there was work, drinking whatever he could drink, and slowly but surely, losing sight of himself and his vow.

Now a man in his middle twenties, Ken was a tall, broad-shouldered man, with long reddish-brown hair on his head and throughout his body. The disease his parents worked so hard to quell would flare up in episodes lasting about 2 weeks. These episodes left Ken’s skin very red and scarred, and incredibly dry and ashy. Despite the disease not having any impact on his mental or physical abilities, his strange look caused the opportunities for work to become very scarce. As the work became scarcer, he became more desperate. Eventually, he turned to robbery in order to eat and survive, and quickly gained a reputation as a petty criminal, and would find himself scurrying from local law enforcements and taking refuge in whatever caves and woods he could find.

One cold winter night, he found a small clearing in some woods, and decided to light a fire and set up camp for the night. It was quiet for the first few hours, until he heard a rustling in the woods. Suddenly, 2 samurai burst into the clearing. One of the samurai, a large masked man covered in armor and carrying a kanabo, appeared to be the leader, and explained to Ken that they had been contracted by a local village to bring Ken to them, dead or alive.

At first, Ken surrendered, telling the men that he would go peacefully. As one of the samurai approached Ken with shackles, Ken suddenly realized that either choice meant death, and that he would rather die fighting than as a prisoner. In a fit of rage and panic, Ken attacked the 2 samurai. Although outnumbered and outclassed, Ken’s raw strength and size, boosted by his fear, proved too much for the samurai, and at the end of a bloody fight, met their deaths at Ken’s hands. As the adrenaline wore down, Ken realized that he had just killed 2 men who carried official colors, and knew he had to run further away to escape retaliation. Before he fled, he grabbed the large samurai’s kanabo and decided to keep it as his own.

Although he managed to evade capture for about a week, Ken was finally captured by the late samurai’s fellow clansmen. This time, the numbers were too great, and Ken was quickly defeated, beaten severely and bound by his hands and feet. The samurai tied Ken to one of their horses, dragging him through the ground for several hours across a dirt road until they brought him to their encampment. They brought Ken to their leaders tent to face judgment.

The leader of the samurai was silver-haired man, whose face bore many scars of the battles he’d both won and lost throughout his years. He explained to Ken that the man he had killed was one of his strongest samurai, and that although the punishment for killing one of his own was usually death, that perhaps Ken’s strength and natural abilities could serve him and his small band of samurai. He offered Ken a position as his personal bodyguard, which he accepted without hesitation.

In the following month or so, Ken discovered that the silver-haired man, who went by Keisuke, was actually a very kind, but fierce leader. Keisuke and his small troop of about 20 samurai travelled throughout the local villages, offering their protection to those who couldn’t really afford it in exchange for nothing more than food and shelter. Keisuke and his man believed that they were servants to a righteous god, and that only through dying in service could they be considered to have lived a pious life.

For years, Ken served alongside Keisuke, earning a reputation with his fellow warriors as the strongest and perhaps most frightening among them. In time, Ken revealed to his leader details of his past, and what happened to his parents and what had taken him down the path he was on. Much to his surprise, Ken was encouraged by his leader to begin practicing his old craft, and as the months went on, he acquired a small inventory and began relearning his old craft. With the support of his fellow samurai, he remembered his vow to his parents, and more than a decade later, once again set forth on that path.

As the years passed, and as Ken grew older, he realized that he had reached a plateau. With their limited resources, and having to constantly travel, Ken knew that he could never be able to fulfill his parents dreams without having a specific place to set up his shop; one place to both learn, practice, and set his roots in so that his art could really blossom. He knew it was time for him to go home; to go back to the Land of Miracles.

With Keisuke’s blessing, Ken travelled through many countries before finally arriving back home in the Land of Miracles. His first stop was his uncle’s house, where he lived with many of Ken’s cousins. Upon his arrival, his uncle was in complete disbelief. Ken told his uncle and the rest of his family the story of what had happened to him and his parents, and what Ken had done and where he had been throughout the years. There had been many rumors about the fate of Hana and Yuto, all of which now seemed better than the truth.

After a short while settling back in, Ken began working with his uncle and his cousins on his craft once again. Although a lot of the knowledge he had learned from his parents had been forgotten throughout the years, Ken was determined to relearn everything. He made a vow, more than a decade ago, and will make sure that everything his parents worked for will not be for naught.
