KINOKO, HIROKI

[Pain Begets Growth.]

General Information Age: 18
Gender: Male
Height: 5’9
Weight: 145 lbs
Physical Features:
  • Face/head: Hiroki’s face can give an accurate first impression without the Kinoko needing to say a word. His empty, lifeless eyes manage to be calming as they rest peacefully. They contrast from his dark skin and dark brown hair, standing out as his most notable trait.
His hair hugs his noggin, with slight bangs covering a sliver of his forehead. Most of his features are slender, which matches the rest of his scrawnier figure.
  • Body: Hiroki is thin, far thinner than anyone with plans of fighting should be. He’s not naturally built to be lanky though, and is seeming to grow it in places. This results in his having an oddly-proportioned weight, with his legs and hips being slightly wider than his upper half. He does not have many spores on his body, though they trickle along his back and lead to the main patch on his right shoulder.
  • Notable Features:Hiroki, like the rest of his clan, has fungus growing on his body. While he has a long trail of small growths along his back, the main patch is on his right shoulder. Here, many different fungi from the Strophariaceae family seem to be fighting to grow, so many dull colored mushrooms have sprouted. Mostly Stropharia win out, causing brown to dominate. These protrude enough to be hard to hide under regular clothing, and thus must have special garments if ever he chooses to.
Clothing/Accessories: Hiroki wears a grey cloak-like top that gives his body much breathing space in order to prevent his skin and the fungi growing on it from irritation. He has modified it over time, cutting his right arm free of it due to it getting in the way more of the time than not. Because of this causing it to shift a bit, he uses a rope to keep it in place.
Whenever he wishes to hide his clan’s blessing, he has a separate hood he wears around his neck that can come up over his head, while also covering his shoulders and arms. He will oftentime fasten this to be tight with additional rope.
His bottoms are a duller shade of grey, and he finishes off the look with black sandals.
Around his pants is a thin rope acting as a belt, which holds up three pouches by his left hip.
The pouch closest to his front is white, the one closest to his hip is grey, and the closest to his back is black.

Personality:
  • General: Hiroki can be described as “at peace with life” and it would simultaneously be the most and least accurate descriptor. These paradoxes rule much of Hiroki’s personality. He is calm despite his hardships, though he still lets them rule his life. He seeks tranquility, though also desires vengeance and justice. He is helpful, yet also needs support.
Having to grapple with the death of his mother, he has turned much to knowledge, studying tomes of knowledge and spending much emotional time reflecting on the nature of the circumstances. This has led to be wise, however his lack of experience also lends to clear faults in the way he carries himself and acts, oftentimes being overly idealistic or lending much to theory that is by no means pragmatic.
He focuses on growth, which he sees as deeply connected to pain.
  • Hopes/Dreams: He consistently focuses on the idea of ‘growth’, and even when it may be skewed, he always strives for some version of it. In the shorter term, he wants to get revenge on the family that is responsible for his mother’s death. While he doesn’t know exactly what he wants to have after that, he also chases a form of contentment that imitates what he puts out. He can be at peace for many times, but holds grief still that he wants to see overcome.
  • Fears: Hiroki fears that he can never right the wrongs. Much of his peace comes from knowing that he will avenge the wrongs, but a part of him understands that all the training in the world doesn’t confirm that anything will become true. A part of the real world scares him, because he knows that at the end of the day, he’s not in control of it. Anything can happen to him at any moment.
  • Combat Mentality: Hiroki is new to combat, and thus isn’t too versed in it. He does know many techniques of the Kinoko, and will utilize them to his advantage. When it comes to fighting, he will oftentimes focus on subtle approaches by using spores.
He will oftentimes not initiate fights until plans are already in place. While keeping a stoic face through it all, if he cannot get a proper head start, his battle plans may be rushed and more sloppy than usual.

Abilities
First Ability
Shinkin-Niku (Fungus Flesh):
Believed to be blessed by a Goddess, the Kinoko's Kekkei Genkai gives them the capability of growing mushrooms from their bodies and their surroundings and to produce large amounts of spores from their tenketsu as well as any fungi the Kinoko member creates through an energy source they create known as Mycorrhiza, which costs more endurance to use than chakra. These fungi and their spores can be utilized in a number of different ways with techniques of all sorts, making members of this clan highly versatile. Unless otherwise specified, mushrooms created through Kinoko techniques constantly produce spores from their gills. These spores are the basis of many Kinoko techniques, but have a weakness in that they are easily burned, washed off or blown away.
Fungal GrowthsShow
Hiroki's main patch of mushrooms is on his right shoulder. While there are a variety of dull-colored fungi here, it is mostly brown mushrooms in the Stropharia family, though the second largest patch of them is a grouping of tiny blue growths. There is a trail of smaller mushrooms in a line on his back which lead up to the patch on his shoulder.

History
Historical AccountsShow
The Preface.

Hiroki was 'born' (if one outside the clan would call what they do birthing) to Atsuko and Mirai Kinoko. Atsuko, an established antidote maker, was paired with the younger Mirai, who had shown her potential for making a variety of medicines and herbal concoctions. As such, they had been put together for the ritual process. As Atsuko had been a popular choice for the process, while he still he felt attachment to Hiroki, it was Mirai who served as his main caretaker from the spore up.
Mirai taught Hiroki much about life. Her pride and joy was in her garden, where she grew many additional plants which mixed well with those she grew on herself. Having Mirai at 20 had allowed her to still grow with him as he went through the years. They shared a special bond, and she taught him many introductory medical techniques and the basics of their clan's special abilities. Beyond that, she taught him important lessons about what it meant to be a Kinoko. She talked about the blessing carrying weight: it was not simply a gift, it was a responsibility. Their kind could heal, and could save lives.

Mirai, being younger and a more relaxed member of the clan, found herself operating with the townspeople more than the usual Kinoko. This led to her catching the eyes of the Suisen Family, a small organized group focused around a family of the same name who had proven to have a stranglehold on much of the local economy. Mirai had unknowingly crafted a treatment that aided a younger member of the family's epilepsy, which led to her services being demanded time and time again. Mirai shared stories of hope and joy with her own son, even as she was getting worked harder and harder by the syndicate, because of the work she was doing for the boy.

However, the treatments were becoming less effective over time. The Suisen's demanded more, but Mirai couldn't provide it. As a warning, they had sent some of their enforcers at night to destroy her gardens. Despite being incredibly heartbroken, she covered it up as a wild animal attack to the rest of the clan, but Kinoko had watched it by Mirai the night it occurred. She made him swear he wouldn't speak of the truth to the other members.

Two weeks later, Mirai came back from a night with the Suisen boy in a rough, beaten condition. She spoke with Kinoko, telling him final life lessons about the joys of life, before succumbing to the overwhelming assault she had sustained and passed away.

It broke Kinoko, who had been 16 at the time.

He flung himself into the clan's work and support to grieve, refusing to make the same mistakes that his mother did. He took every word she had to say to heart, and remembers most to this day, constantly reminding himself with her life lessons when they pop up. He regrew her garden and used it to pay honor to Mirai. It became a place of growth, where he would go to calm down and attack the heart of his issues with thought instead of rage.

All the while, he had been preparing and learning, both from the elders and his own practice, as he grew into the young man he is today. And as much as he wanted to be able to forgive those who wronged him, as his mother had asked him to, through his own meditation, he realized that the only thing that could fix what had happened was vengeance. So he set his priorities on growing in order to take out the Suisen Family.
