Shinkizou Family

[Six Coins - Good Fortune]

General Information
Type: Family
Village: Kumogakure Province or Gyorou Province
Size: About 300
Traits: Members of the family tend to be smaller in build than average and often have dark color hair. Genetically, nearly all members tend to be skinny. Family members poses golden-brown eyes and pale skin tones. While not a clan, Shinkizou blood is notable for running strong in offspring, even of mixed heritage.
Traditions: The Shinkizou are descendants of a famous Buddhist sect, the Pranayama Buddhists. As such, much of their traditions reflect the thousands of years of monastic culture the family experienced.
  • Clothing: Shinkizou tend to wear simple monastic clothing, often in shades of red or orange. Linen is preferred above other materials.
  • Personality: Shinkizou are resilient and well-hardened. They are extremely focused and posses and extremely impressive willpower built from years of training the body and mind through focused breathing and chanting. Mentally, they are a tough people. Shinkizou also tend to be altruistic and pacifistic due to their religious beliefs, though they are no strangers to battle if it is a means to protect.
  • Religion: Pranayama Buddhism. A Buddhist sect that focuses on Pranayama, the art of extending ones life force and becoming one with their surroundings through focused breathing and training. Paranayama preaches that ones connection to that around them and acknowledgement of the forces around them is the path to true enlightenment. The art particularly uses many throat breathing chants that can seem odd in many ways to those unacquainted.
Influence: The Shinkizou have large influence culturally in LIghtning Country, but in recent years have little to no political sway. Within Kumogakure they are not particularly influential, and are a rather neutral family, not too different from any old family beyond their abilities.
History Lightning Country's northern mountainous terrain, rich valleys, strong rivers, and ocean-side real estate combined with a history of neutrality made it the perfect breeding ground for religion. Considered the world capitol for temples and shrines, many religious groups set their routes in the country such as the Shinto Kyoukan and the Buddhist Pranayama. Before shinobi, the Pranayama sect of Buddhism was particularly strong in the north. he Pranayama were a sect of Buddhist Monks believed that breathing connected to all forms of life, and focused on using breathing to boost ones inner power to achieve the extraordinary. However, with the proliferation of shinobi and early wars, religion died down. For many it was hard to believe in gods or spirituality after the Genma wrecked havoc and through chakra man himself became god.

Regardless, the Pranayama sect evolved and survived, lasting all the way to the warring states period of Lightning Country. During the war many of their temples were destroyed and ransacked- the Pranayama being relatively wealthy due to the many donations their temples received... from there many of the survivors went to far reaches, but one of the sects migrated to Kumogakure and became known as the Shinkizou, where they have since been residents for over 100 years.

Most recently in history, due to their buddhist beliefs and being relatively peaceful, most of the the Shinkizou obtained from the Civil War in Lightning Country and instead retreated to their fallen temples. The Shinto clan Kyoukan had similar situations. During the war, aided by Kumogakure, both the Kyoukan and the Shinkizou provided medical support, food, and shelter to all displaced by war using their network of ancient temples and shrines as safe havens.
Shinobi Information Definitions:
  • Pranayama: Pranayama is an form of practiced breathing, focus, and throat chanting. Traditionally it was used to strengthen the body to prepare for tanking a hit, or to prepare to attack with more power. Alternatively, Pranayama has found itself in the last few decades being used by those who possess chakra to cast ninjutsu.
  • Iron Body Style: A unique monastic style of fighting employed by the Pranayama buddhist monks prior to the shinobi proliferation, through focus the combatant buffs their body to become iron itself.
  • The Eight Gates: A mastery and mastery and possible path for users of Pranayama, through Pranayama without moving one can turn off the limiters of their body and release the power of their tenketsu, greatly increasing their ability in combat.
  • The Chains of Damnation: A mastery found very rarely in even life-long practitioners of Pranayama, very few in history have been capable of using the Chains of Damnation. Requiring advanced skill in Pranayama, Fuuinjutsu, Instinct, and more, the user is able to use their breathing and focus to virtually stretch their existence beyond their body and perform Fuuinjutsu from range, though at it's own risky costs. This requires an Ability.
Requirements: Pranayama-derivative techniques have specific requirements which can be found described in the concentrations below. While Pranayama is an ancient art, the Shinkizou version is a modern rendition and a Secret Technique line known only to the Kumogakure family, Shinkizou.

Base Concentration:
Pranayama:
Requirements: 1 Tajjutsu Concentration
As a member of the Shinkizou clan, the practitioner has honed their mind and body to use Pranayama and through controlled breathing and throat chanting they can alter the state of their body, including their tenketsu. Shinkizou members who have studied this art can thus cast ninjutsu or perform non-maneuver taijutsu through Pranyama from even a completely still position.

To use Pranayama however requires strong bodily control. When casting a jutsu through Pranayama, regardless of jutsu type, a Taijutsu stat equal to the rank requirement of the jutsutype being cast is required. For example, if Pranayama is used to cast an S-Rank Fireball, which requires 35 Ninjutsu, 35 Taijutsu is also required. Pranayama when used as a casting method scales with the users Taijutsu level.
Mastery Ability:
Pranayama Master: Control Seals:
Requirements: Ninpou Specialist, 1 Ability Slot, Pranayama Concentration
As a member of the Shinkizou clan, the practitioner has taken their skills of Pranayama to the absolute upper limits possible allowing them to virtually stretch their existence and tenketsu beyond their body. Combined with their domain knowledge of Fuuinjutsu, the user has obtained Pranayama Mastery: Control of Seals. Usage of Ranged Fuuinjutsu created via Pranayama has a few rules however:
  • Ranged Fuuinjutsu via Pranayama requires extreme focus. The user must continue their breathing routines in addition to keeping eye-contact and focus on their target. If contact is broken or the user is unable to continue cycling their breathing, Ranged Fuuinjutsu cannot be cast.
  • There are set distances for each rank and the distances do not scale. Opposite of typical jutsu, the further the complexity of a seal, the less range it can be used at.
    • S-Rank(40^): 35 Meters
    • S-Rank: 45 Meters
    • A-Rank: 50 Meters
    • B-Rank: 75 Meters
    • C-rank: 100 Meters
    • D-Rank: 115 Meters
  • Similar to Genjutsu, casting time does not scale. This means higher stats does not speed up the time required to cast. It is static.
In addition to the Taijutsu stat requirement rules of base Pranayama, casting ranged fuuinjutsu via Pranayama also requires a Control stat equal to the requirements of the Fuuinjutsu. This means an A-Rank Fuuinjutsu performed via Ranged Pranayama requires 25 Ninjutsu, 25 Control, and 25 Taijutsu.
Jutsu
The Immortal Iron BodyShow
Harden the mind and body to become Iron. Unlike most stances, due to use of Pranayama specifically the user can actually use each stance without a specific form to their body, though the form written is considered the historical style of the fighting.
Requires: Pranayama, Rigid Body, Upper Body, Lower Body, Perception

Meditative State of Mind
D-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
The novice has trained themselves to empty their mind through peaceful relaxation, and in the process open their mind. Due to their relaxed mental state, the user is free from distractions of trigger emotions or irrelevant details, instead allowing their mind to pond their environment, picking up on any clues or oddities around them.

The Nail that Sticks Out
D-Rank Stance Taijutsu
The novice has a remarkably firm stance and control over their body, allowing them to resist force with tenacity. While still relative to their strength, this allows the novice to hold their own against opposing forces even if they are a little weaker than that force, be it gusts of wind meant to knock them over or a tackle from a larger opponent. The user becomes iron- a nail that sticks out that only extremely direct force can push down. When paired with Meditative State of Mind the user can do this even more effectively, focusing their being into their stance.

Without Fear
C-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
The novice has trained themselves to ignore emotions and to lock onto their goal at hand, ignoring even pain. They may fight without distraction, take hits without wavering, and keep going forward on their path. Those who have practiced this level of self-thought control are said to fight without fear, even of death, monks of past having been said to march forward with blades still in their body and blood gushing forth from their mouth.

Iron Fist
C-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Requirements:Without Fear
A mixture of mind and body, the user focuses their body into a rigid stance similar with feed wide, somewhat crouching. By breathing along side their strikes, they create rhythm in their body and increase their own durability. By putting aside their fear or even pain, the user is able to punch with all the possible force of their body, using the absolute full potential of their strength without fear of injuring self. Essentially, this allows the users body to become like iron, delivering very hard painful strikes while increasing their own durability.

Samanera
C-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
The novice has rejected the lies of humanity, and in it's rejection, has become much more astute to sensing lies. This ranges from finding white lies in the stories they hear to sensing a feint, or a fake-attack.

Bulwark
B-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Requirements: Samanera, Iron Fist
Benefiting from their past stances and experience, through breathing and body control the user lowers their body temperature the user hardens and reinforces their body, adrenaline also spiking to greatly increase the durability of their body. Through focus and stance, the user moves openly and fluidly with precision with rapid execution, allowing them to move with hits to their body to minimize damage. Effectively those of the Iron Body can hit harder, take harder hits, and minimized damage to twice that of the normal man.

Devotion
B-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
Through meditation, focused breathing, and years of training, the devoted is truly an unshakable paragon. Human emotions hold little to no meaning as the users mental state becomes an extremely solid steel fortress. Just like their iron body, their mind and spirit is fortified. It becomes nigh impossible to confuse or trick the eyes of the devoted, their senses so keen and their mind so free. Even with blows to the head or overloaded visual stimuli, the user has their wits about them.

Iron Body
A-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Requirements:Bhikkhu, Bulwark
The titular technique, masters of the Iron Body combine stance and discipline for a ferocious effect. Using the prior techniques to harden their body, their keen instinct and quick reactions, and by employing precise muscle control, the Bhikkhu will nearly automatically exert sheer power through their muscles corresponding to incoming damage, or when dealing damage. As such this allows them to let their body become living steel- a living weapon that breaks the laws of reality. Those of the Iron Body can stop even spears from piercing their stomachs by flexing their muscles at the correct time, exerting their full strength as their defense in that area.

Bhikkhu
A-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
Requirements: 35 Instinct
The master, a true monk of legendary mental and physical prowess, via breathing meditation and self-control the user is capable of completely removing themselves from the situation, almost creating the feeling of having left their human body. From this 'new vantage point' the Bhikkhu is capable of seeing all before him with unclouded judgement. The faintest movement or sound becomes input to the Bhikkhu, the tension of the opponents muscle or the vibrations on the ground giving them feedback. Legends say even the wind off an opponents moving body in the grass becomes sensory to the Bhikkhu.
The Eight Gates of HeavenShow
The ultimate and legendary form of bodily control, through controlled breathing a pure ]concentration the user breaks the limiters of their mind and body, allowing them to harness the full power within. Unlike usual stances, the Eight Gates of Heaven is achieved solely through Pranayama, meaning the user can enter the state through breathing and body control rather than moving a specific way.
Requires: Pranayama, Upper Body, Lower Body

Kaimon - Opening Gate
D-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Focusing their breathing and collecting themselves, the user will unleash a ripple of energy within their body causing them to gain +3 Strength at the cause of their movements causing minor damage and pain, mainly in the form of lactic acid. This is like how you feel after a work out- it is somewhat painful to move. Lasts 5 posts.

Kyuumon - Resting Gate
D-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Focusing their breathing and collecting themselves for two posts, during which they cannot use other jutsu, the user will unleash a ripple of energy within their body causing them to gain +3 stamina for a post and releasing adrenaline and cortisol into their body, reducing pain and removing inflammation in their body.

Seimon - Life Gate
C-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Focusing their breathing and collecting themselves, the user will unleash a ripple of energy within their body causing them to gain +6 speed, but at the cause of minor damage and pain in the form of lactic acid similar to the pain after a work out- it is somewhat painful to move. The user will also take a hit of -3 stamina as their blood begins to boil, the skin turning nearly read as their blood vessels engorge. Lasts 6 posts.

Shoumon - Suffering Gate
]B-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Focusing their breathing and collecting themselves, the user will unleash a ripple of energy within their body causing them to gain +9 strength, but at the cause of minor damage and pain in the form of lactic acid similar to the pain after a work out- it is somewhat painful to move. The user will find the stress on their body reduces their ability to use chakra, causing -3 control. They will also take a hit of -3 stamina as their blood vessels begin to further stress. Lasts 8 posts.

Tomon - Limit Gate
B-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Focusing their breathing and collecting themselves, the user will unleash a ripple of energy within their body causing them to gain +9 speed, but at the cause of minor damage and pain in the form of lactic acid similar to the pain after a work out- it is somewhat painful to move. The user will find the stress on their body reduces their ability to use chakra, causing -3 control. They will also take a hit of -3 stamina as their blood vessels begin to further stress. Lasts 8 posts.

Code: Select all

Keimon - View Gate
A-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Prerequisite: 30 Stamina
Focusing their breathing and collecting themselves, the user will unleash a ripple of energy within their body causing them to gain +12 speed but at the cause of damaging their body, causing an extreme burning through out the body and muscles to tear. After the end of this technique, permanent damage is done to the user causing them to lose 1 stamina permanently. Lasts for 9 posts. Blood begins to pump and oxydize so fast in the users body they can move at incredible speeds and also gain the ability to only need to breathe once every 5-6 posts. At this point the energy flowing off the user is so strong it vaporizes water they stand on, and causes the wind to move around them. Blood begins to poor out the users veins, baking onto their skin causing them appear not only red, but give an iron aroma to the area around them and a protective armor equal to 1/2 their stamina.

Kyoumon - Wonder Gate
S-Rank Stance Taijutsu
Requirement: 40 Taijutsu
Focusing their breathing and collecting themselves, the user will unleash a ripple of energy within their body causing them to gain +18 strength, but at the cause of damaging their body, causing an extreme burning through out the body and muscles to tear. This causes permanent damage to their body after the technique ends, with a permanent lost of 1 strength and pain comparable to having been stabbed in the thighs. Lasts 10 posts. The energy around the user released during the activation of this technique is so powerful, it can dent the ground beneath them and even creates a ripple of burning hot-wind around them. The original burning hot wind pushes out with 4/5ths the users strength in a 20 meter radius from them. The wind gives 3rd degree burns on direct contact. After the initial burst, this forms a burning hot aura around the user with the ability to give 2nd degree burns on contact.

Shimon - Death Gate
S-Rank Stance Taijutsu
A forbidden technique, and surprisingly one that requires less finesse than the form below, the user uses breathing and body control to switch every point of their tenketsu on, activate all their muscles, and everything their body has to offer. For the next 6 posts the user is able to gain 20 Strength and 20 speed, ignoring the standard rules of buffs. On the other hand, after the first post, the buff will lose 1 potency in strength and speed until it is over on the 6th post. The user will also lose -3 stamina per post, making it very possible to run out of stamina before the full effect of the technique can be used. During this time the users blood is literally vaporizing around them, performing a protective coating equal to 2/3rds their strength, and also causing the energye around them to be blood red. Their body is so hot and generates so much heat that their touches can deliver third degree burns. When the technique ends, the users body cell's will have moved and undergone so much stress they will begin to burn up and unravel- causing the user to seemingly disintegrate into ash.

Hi, I like the idea of the clan, but there's a lot that needs to be changed.

I'll start with the easiest: Pranayama Master: Control Seals needs to be an ability.  We've been consistant in our rulings that Ranged Fuuin requires an ability.

With your other concentration, I like it, but read part of it kinda like advanced channeling.  I like it, and suggest making the comparison more clear, with maybe the speed of the channel based on taijutsu instead of control?

Onto your jutsu styles.  I'm gonna start with the Eight Gates.  First, please note that you cannot copyright the Eight Gates in their entirety, and only your particular method for achieving them.

So I think the durations on these are a bit long personally, but you may need a mod to step in for that.

For Resting Gate, my understanding is that stamina buffing doesn't increase your reserves, at least not long term.  As long as you're aware of that, it should be cool.

View Gate is at the least a pseudo-heavenly tai, and as such the requirements should reflect that.  Death Gate and Wonder Gate as well.

Okay, so that's what I got for the gates for this round.  However, I'd like to note the lactic acid buildup debuff you're using.  You add the description that it is like after a workout.  As long as that's understood to reflect the debuff in the rules (pain with movement), it should be fine.

As for Iron Body, there are a few notes.

I'd like numbers for The Nail that Sticks Out, and they ought to be pretty low.

Without Fear ignoring all pain is a bit strong for a c-rank imo.  I'd suggest getting rid of the part about the monks of past because that seems outside the scope of what this can do.

Samanera needs a stat check at the very least, and probably at c-rank can't detect lies through high ranking tai.

I'm a little skeptical of Bulwark, I don't like the 50% resistance.

While I think B-Rank is better, Devotion still has some of the problems I noted in Without Fear.

I'm not sure what to think of Iron Body, but I won't note anythign more about it for this round of checks.

Apart from these checks, please read through your post again and correct all spelling and grammar mistakes.  There are quite a few.

I'll start with the easiest: Pranayama Master: Control Seals needs to be an ability. We've been consistant in our rulings that Ranged Fuuin requires an ability. <- Show me other rulings please.

For Resting Gate, my understanding is that stamina buffing doesn't increase your reserves, at least not long term. As long as you're aware of that, it should be cool. <- yeah, it's more like an adrenaline shot temporarily.

@View gate added an above A-Rank requirement.

@Iron Body.
The kind of effects and whats going is coming strait out of the rules on disciplines and stances. C-Rank-> hose who train at great length can ignore most pain and fear....  They can easily follow a target and are rarely if ever distracted. Lies are as truth and small openings are as open fields to their perceptive eyes. etc..

The Nail that Sticks out is relative to your strength, meaning 20 strength is only 20 strength. The difference is something a few or so stronger isnt going to knock you over, cause you're bracing for impact basically. It's using a jutsu move to make a difference strategically.

I'm not going to comb through past decisions, that's a waste of time.  You can either change it, or feel free to consult a mod.  But please be aware I consulted staff chat before writing up the check.

Having your blood form as iron still reads to me as pseudo-heavenly.  Techniques like that and the other similar gates require 35 in strength or speed, whichever is more relevant.

I see a difference between "most pain" and multiple swords sticking inside your body.

Most lie detector techniques require interplay.  I'd look at characters like Hideki maybe to see what they look like.

I'm fine with the Nail that Sticks Out as bracing against a few strength higher, but personally am skeptical of letting it go above 5, even when combined with the meditative state of mind.  That's in line with elemental strengths and weaknesses and seems reasonable to me, but that's something a mod may be able to help with more.

Oh above 5 is definitely out of the question. Above 5 is not a few, that's a significant percentage of power, and I entirely agree there.

I can tag in a, given close to equal or greater than instinct if you want?

@Pain, IDK. I think it's doable given the writing on discipline. I think a sword in you is worse than a missing limb. if you want the line drawn, I can write something to that effect.

I figure it was stamina but I could see it.

EDIT: made it an ability for now

What sticks out most to me is that the Pranayama conc and all the jutsu are very tai-focused; yet the ability is a nin-spec, ranged fuuinjutsu power that seems entirely out of place with the rest. It feels like two ideas bodged into one clan, honestly. While I like how the ranged fuuin ability has been balanced, I just don't think it fits with the rest of what the clan is doing? (Also, is the ability meant to be called 'Chains of Damnation', as it's referred by in the shinobi information section?). While in general I do like that the clan can be used in many different ways by its members, and is somewhat self-limiting in that it would require high stats in so many areas to be able to do everything—not to mention how the nin-spec requirement imposes some real limits—I feel like it could be better in either the tai or nin areas if it just focused on one or the other. That's just my opinion, though.

I'm on the fence as to whether the Pranayama conc itself should be the clan ability; it's certainly powerful, and doesn't feel quite right as a simple conc even though it does function, to an extent, like other concs do (if in a much broader and encompassing sense). I'll have to think on this & discuss.

There's a rogue
box in the last portion of your Eight Gates jutsu list still - I assume unintentional?

The Nail that Sticks Out - I agree with what you and Taku were saying above, but I'd still like a more solid number in here. Just something to imply that it's ineffective for a str difference of ≥5, etc.

In anticipation of judging tai concs properly, I don't think the Eight Gates style requires [Upper Body] or [Lower Body]; it seems more mental and all-encompassing body control than those two concs imply. You're welcome to keep them included if you want (or a single body conc, if that is what is implemented in the tai rules instead) but I don't think there's a hard requirement based on what the jutsu are doing.

Small typo in your Eight Gates description: "through controlled breathing a pure ]concentration the user breaks the limiters".

Kaimon - Opening Gate - can you remove the word 'somewhat' to make it simply "making it painful to move" in-line with the supplementary drawback you're using. I think it's fair that 'somewhat painful to move' would correspond to a lower boost (+1 or +2) than 'painful to move' (+3)

Seimon - Life Gate - same as above. Minor typo in "the skin turning nearly read as their blood vessels engorge".

Shoumon - Suffering Gate - same deal with 'somewhat'. Per the below part of the boosting rules, you need to have the drawback here come from a single stat instead of two, too:
Buffing & Debuffing:
Additionally, you must drawback from less than or equal stats from what you boost to. If you boost Speed and Strength by 12, you can't have a drawback be -3 in wit, control, genjutsu and ninjutsu to balance out. Boosting only two stats require your subtract from only one or two stats.
Tomon - Limit Gate - same as above.

Keimon - View Gate - I think the technique is fine, but this part is confusing - "Blood begins to pump and oxydize so fast in the users body they can move at incredible speeds and also gain the ability to only need to breathe once every 5-6 posts". With blood pumping and oxidizing faster, the logical result would be needing to breathe more, not less, no? I'm not opposed to the jutsu being able to do this, it just sounds odd despite the general suspension of disbelief we employ for jutsu here.

Kyoumon - Wonder Gate - My gut feeling is that 4/5ths strength at S(40), on top of the other benefits of this jutsu, is a little high. Or is there a precedent here you're drawing from?

Shimon - Death Gate - I'm not okay with this one breaking the boost/debuff rules so thoroughly—especially at S(35)! The 'death' supplementary drawback would allow you to boost up to +24 at S(50). You say "seemingly" disintegrate; I assume they are in fact dying when the technique ends? Even with the -3 stamina drain per post (=~+6 boost), you'd still be 10 shy of the +40 stats you're boosting here if we allowed you to break the rules—but I see no reason to allow that. 2/3rds strength armour and 3rd degree burns are fine, however.

I think that Keimon, Kyoumon, and Shimon are manipulating the body on the level of pseudo-heavenly tai, too, and should feature a 35+ stat prerequisite—possibly stamina, to represent the body's ability to actually endure the technique for the duration, or else instinct to mentally overcome that barrier?
