AR I) Death and Reincarnation

Post by Ace Trainer » Mon Feb 01, 2021 1:30 pm

Reincarnation and Inheritance One of the major thematic points of Naruto, and consequently, NSRP, is reincarnation. We see it throughout the series, and Saigen itself means “revival.” So, it’s important for it to be thematically relevant within our system, too. Reincarnation is how it is done. Character death is an inevitable part of any roleplay forum, and unfortunately, it cannot be undone. Death is death, and it comes for all of us. Reincarnation and Inheritance offers some alternatives to the unfortunate demise of a character, may it be for plot purposes, an unexpected attack, or simply the changing tides of the world. Our characters are the main characters, and with help from the powers that be, they may live on. As a standard, we allow you to initiate the process at your leisure, so there does not have to be a specific event to trigger it, though we encourage people to do it at the terminal points of their character's story. If it's perceived that this process is being used in an abusive way, staff has the ability to deny a reincarnation.

There are three forms, each has distinct advantages and disadvantages, and we will discuss each below.

Reincarnation

Reincarnation is the first option. Through reincarnation, a character’s death is the end of their story, but perhaps not the end of their essence. Reincarnation breaks down a character into their value in Ryo, as dark as it may sound, and gives them a flat total for their worth. This value is calculated off of their jutsu, equipment, companion slots, and anything else on the character they would have purchased not including stats. This total is then recorded on a new character’s sheet, and dispensed to the character over certain achievements, seen below in the following table.
AchievementPercent Released
Character Creation10%
Completion of Chuunin Exam15%
Complete 10 topics20%
Complete 20 topics 20%
Reach A-rank Bounty25%
Max Stats10%
Below are a few bullet points that details the parameters for Rebirth that are important to make note of.
  • The Completion of a Chuunin Exam means the Chuunin exam must actually be roleplayed out. Bypassing the chuunin exam will forgo this percentage. Characters that do not belong to village reach this achievement when they are entered into the Bingo Book.
  • A reborn character gains only the Ryo from the original character, they are not offered access to jutsu styles, abilities, weapons, etc, unless earned IC.
    • However as a caveat, the “reincarnation” can be used as justification for new abilities, i.e someone reborn from a clan member may have a new ability based off the clans, even if they don’t belong to it, but they could not have the clans actual kekkei genkai.
    • Once everything is added up to determine the amount of ryo being given to the reincarnated character, you must subtract the starting amount of ryo from the predecessor (i.e.; if the predecessor started at jounin, you would subtract 150 ryo from your total before taxes.)
  • Reincarnated characters must start at genin/D-rank Minor Country.
  • Reincarnated characters can be from any village, not necessarily the village their predecessor was from.
  • If a reborn character dies before all their points are dispensed to them, all forms of reincarnation are an option but the undispensed points disappear and are not accounted for with the new reincarnation options.
Rebirth is the most straightforward option, as it allows you to recoup the Ryo lost from death and invest in a new character, and while it may take some work to regain what you’ve lost, your effort does not simply get lost.

In the event you have a payout in excess of 500 Ryo, please read the below spoiler for both Reincarnation and Inheritance.

In order to prevent legacy characters from becoming incredibly overpowered, there is a bracketed tax system in play for Reincarnation and Inheritance. Once your inherited ryo reaches 500, there are brackets every 250 ryo that are taxed at increasing amounts, shown in the table below. The first column, Inherited Ryo shows the bracket range. Only the values in that cell are taxed at the corresponding tax rate. The Tax Percentage is the percentage that range is taxed at. This means if you have 780 Ryo, you keep the full 500, the next 250 is taxed at 10%, and the remaining 30 is taxed at 25%. It does not mean the entire 780 is taxed at 25%.
Inherited RyoTax PercentageTotal TaxedTotal Inherited Running
5000%0500
501 - 75010%25225
751 - 100030%75175
1001 - 125060%150100
All ryo in excess of 1250 are taxed at a 100% rate. This means the absolute maximum you can inherit is 1000 ryo.

This means, you only need to find your bracket, subtract the upper limit of the previous bracket, and tax that remaining total. Then you can simply add up the "total inherited" column to determine your inheritance.

However!
The "tax" is called such as a reason, and you have the power to determine where it goes. 50% of the taxed ryo can be redistributed to organizations that either the dying character belongs to, or the reincarnated/inheritor will belong to. Meaning, in the previous example of 780 ryo, a total of 33 ryo was taxed (25 from 501 - 750, 8 from the remaining 30). The user can then give that 33 ryo to an organization.
Inheritance

Inheritance is the second option. Inheritance “creates” a junior of your character, which can be however you wish to interpret it. You can justify it however you want IC, with some people calling it a child, others a clone, and others simply a disciple of your character. However it may be, this legacy promises the continuation of your character story through some means, or a complete change in your character’s direction. Inheritance allows for a characters Ryo to be passed on to their successor. It also allows for the regaining of abilities, weapons, concentrations and jutsu.

Like Reincarnation, Inheritance takes the total value of anything purchaseable with Ryo and all the Ryo on the character, and gives them out when the landmarks are hit. However, when forming their inheritance, the user can determine what gets broken down. For example if the character has a very expensive sword, they may decide to allow the inheritor to simply receive the sword, rather than converting it into Ryo.

Completion of Chuunin Exam15%

Additionally, you get a few attributes off of your origin character.
  • Any weapons available from the origin character can be given to the new character if available at no cost.
    • However, if the origin character’s body was lost, or looted, those items must be recovered. However they are recovered, there will be no cost, even if they are looted off another character.
  • Any jutsu the original character knows can be ‘purchased’ with Ryo, at half the cost.
  • The character must be from the same village as the origin character (or must be missing nin if the origin character was a missing ninja)
  • Inheritance characters must start at genin.
  • Much like reincarnation, the death of a Inheritance character before the dispensing of all inherited ryo or items means those Ryo and items are lost to the void, and a character following it will not have access to discounts relating to them.
  • Once everything is added up to determine the amount of ryo in the inheritance, you must subtract the starting amount of ryo from the predecessor (i.e.; if the predecessor started at jounin, you would subtract 150 ryo from your total before taxes.)
[/list]

The Inheritance option may be more enticing to people who want to directly carry on a certain type of character build, or have a story they’re heavily invested in. It allows for the continuation of many aspects of your original character without an enormous cost to the roleplayer.

Take Over

The third form of reincarnation, Take Over is not actually reincarnation, but is instead, the continuation of the character’s current life cycle. Take Over means that, upon death, the character’s soul will take over a new host, possess their body, and utilize this body instead. Take Over comes with heavy costs, however. All point and Ryo the character has is lost, their stat total is reduced to the base total of their rank, and they lose one ability slot. If all ability slots are full, they are able to get rid of one of their abilities in order to utilize take over.

Initially, the body they take over will retain it’s appearance, however, methods can be used to modify this appearance in order to match the character’s original appearance. Take over can be justified IC however you would like, may it be through jutsu, medical procedure, or simply the divine intervention of your character’s god. If Take over is used, you take over a body that was an NPC, NOT someone else’s character, additionally, that body will be from the village your character is from for convenience. However, no one will know your character is who he is unless you justify it IC.

Take Over obviously has heavy tolls, so should not be taken lightly. If chosen, it cannot be undone. Due to the ability slot restrictions, Take Over can only be used 3 times, as each time, an ability slot would be lost. Upon the attempt of the 4th time, there would be no ability slot to use for payment. There is an exception to this, because the character “died”, their bounty will be reset. If the character gets their bounty up to XX, they are able to regain the lost ability slot. If a character holds an important title, rank, or position, it should be assumed that that position is lost until it can be earned again. This means if you are a kage and are assassinated, simply showing you are who you say you are will not suffice, but you would need to pass the kage exam again.
