Onwards to the New Dawn

How deep did this temple go into the earth? Half of a kilometer? Two? When Indra had first uncovered it and gone down into spire, he'd traveled..20 feet? Maybe thirty? Down into the ground and under the sand. Over the course of weeks, he hadn't gotten much further. What wasn't blocked by collapsed walls or barred doors was filled with sand most of the time. The massive atrium that seemed to be the center of the tower they were in that spiraled down with walls and walls of books on shelves was at least down 30 stories. Over the weeks he'd clear balcony to balcony, jumping down and exploring with his puppets when necessary. Through it, he'd find mirrors and lenses, candles set up to project light. It would become increasingly clear that the temple may not have been built underground, but it had been occupied for many years after it was brought underground. Through the use of these light contraptions, Indra had managed to slowly illuminate the cavernous temple.

Upon reaching the bottom of the atrium, Indra had found that in fact this tower was only one, and the temple actually had three. While the one they had started in was the largest, the other two were similarly designed. Further, he found that the bottom of the temple, what had once been the entry way at the surface, had been excavated out into the ground, and down into the water table deep below the desert. The plant life that Indra had found teeming throughout the lower portions of the temple, even in the darkness, had began to make sense. He was thankful for Sakaze, who's mastery of Sunakinesis had made excavating the deeper portions of the temple far easier, able to clear out the giant spaces of sand and debris effortlessly. While Indra could help with puppetry and strings, Sakaze had certainly expedited the process. While they were idealogically in vastly different places, Indra had found a deep appreciation for Sakaze's presence. Where he was hesitant to go out into the world given the risk it provided him, Sakaze was undeterred in being an agent for their cause. In their excavations they had many long conversations about Yuumegure and the belief system they shared, their faith, and the ways they found worship and faith.

The third tower had not yet been fully excavated, but the second tower they'd identified had been quickly identified as not quite as suitable for the use of the people staying with them in this underground haven. The space had been much more archaic, which was already saying something given the age of the temple over all. The walls were covered in religious art work, but there were virtually no book shelves or studies as was the case for the tower they had started in, and he had found that while there were 30 stories in their original tower, this tower had enormous arching spaces between the pathways that resulted in only 12 stores within this tower. Each of the stories and balconies had spaces though that had been clearly been used for some sort of ceremony, with sinks and wash spaces along the walls. As the first tower had become increasingly occupied, with more and more people in the studies and dorms, reading books in the same way Indra had when he was the solitary occupant, he had found himself more and more often within the bounds of this tower instead. This tower had a very active water flow, with many fixtures regularly pouring water out of them into large pools that drained deep into the towers inner workings invisible to the occupants. At the higher levels where the desert heat still penetrated ever so slightly, this resulted in mid-day mists forming from the evaporated water, which lead to thick mosses developing on the walls. Regardless, many solitary hours had been spent standing on the edges of the overlooks, deep in thought over the challenges that laid ahead of them.

Eventually, Indra would begin a slow stride down the winding pathway of the tower towards the central grand hall of the temple. His hands in his pockets, today was an important day. Six people from a small oasis they'd met during a trade outing had spoken of being expelled from their village given their...vocal opinions on the occupancy of Wind Country. Their coming to the temple would bring the total number of occupants in the temple to two hundred people. They were no longer a small outpost hidden in the desert. They were a bonafide village.

The grand hall was lively now. While a handful of the people lived in the top of the tower in the studies and dormitories Indra and Soseki had first discovered, they were primarily people who were often coming and going and didn't want to make the trek up the tower. The vast majority of people had moved down to the lower levels, bringing a great amount of life into the ground hall. The kitchens were alive with family matriarchs who had taken roles of caretakers, others who taught small classes to children no longer able to attend schools. Or simply friends and peers spending lively times together. But as Indra emerged from the hallway from his tower, a hush would fall over the hall. Even as a 15 year old, every occupant of the tower had come to know Indra as their leader. While only a Prism in the formal construction of Sunagakure's branch of Yuumegure, he functioned as this temple's Lucent, and while not all of the new occupants followed Yuumegure, many were in crisis and relied on the wisdom and guidance he was rapidly forced to develop.

Indra would stride across the hall, nervousness bubbling up in his stomach as he felt all the eyes land on him, the conversations dying off to watch him. He would stop in front of a little girl, a 4 year old that had been in the temple for a few months now, her mother and father being one of the first people Indra had personally recruited. Indra had become quite fond of her, and he would pick her up and flip her around onto his back, giving her a piggy back ride as he continued across the room, "You have a big breakfast?"

"Mmhm!", she nodded excitedly.

"Good, me too. We have a big day ahead of us I think.", he whispered to her with a soft smile.

As he approached the small steps leading up to platform, he'd let her down, leaving her at the base as he stood slightly above everyone else in the room. His eyes would scan the room, soaking in all the people. While there were a couple of people out on missions or trades, the vast majority of the people they had recruited, their followers, many of them Sakaze's, but just as many followers for Indra, were in the room now. All of they eyes locked onto him. The nervousness he felt would slowly wane away, perhaps it was Her Light filling him in the moment, but instead it would be replaced with confidence. He would close his eyes and take a deep breath, silently doing a quick prayer before releasing the breath and looking back out into the crowd.

"I am leaving.", he would announce to the room.

“I am leaving.”

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap, silencing the room. Sakaze’s eyes narrowed, her grip tightening on the tome she had been reading from--a collection of parables that she'd found in the library, all containing warnings against being complacent against the darkness--as she stood up from the center of the small crowd she'd gathered and walked over to the man who fuctioned as this temple's Lucent.

She did not begrudge him the title as she was gone far too often to provide much in the way of regular spiritual guidance, though she did her best while she was in the temple. He'd left before as well, of course. He'd brought others to the temple, swelled the ranks of the faithful that called this place home as well as bringing in a few who did not know Her light, but were still willing to contribute to the cause.

This time, however, felt different.

"Leaving?" she asked, a frown on her lips as her dark eyes took in the form of the young Jinchuriki who'd helped build this coalition of freedom-seekers. "Why? For how long?"

Her tone wasn't accusatory, but the way she scrutinized him indicated that she wanted an explanation. They had just finished clearing this place, gathering their strength--now was the time to act, in her estimation.

Indra was nearly 17 now. It had been almost 2 years since he fled Sunagakure, since the war that had occurred. He'd grown, though not by much. And the responsibilities he had here were significant to say the least. The silence that overtook the room after his announcement was one he was sure he'd remember for years to come. Many of these people did not know who he was, or at least, the secrets contained within his body. They saw him as a vessel for the Sun, a prophet meant to carry on the word of Yuumegure. Even the non-believers among them as Indra as as leader. This was by design, but it came with a pressure nonetheless. Sakaze seemed predisposed to being a leader. She had gathered many of the followers here, and they hung on her words just as they did his, though perhaps only because she gave that guidance to them. He wondered would he still garner their respect if he hadn't gained Sakaze's.

Of course, she was the first to speak. Breaking from the crowd and approaching him, her discerning and scrutinizing words making it clear she would not readily accept any decision given to her. He met her gaze, his eyes softening to try and assuage any concern that would rise from her and then hold out his hands peacefully. He would answer he question, though his gaze would fall past her and onto the crowd, his voice being directed towards them. "Many of you come from the local regions of the Zentouyuubou, small villages and the like impacted by the incursion of our foreign conquerors. But Wind Country is vast, and even if it is under the control of another country, it's borders remain and so do it's people."

He sighed, looking down at the ground momentarily, "I want to be a good leader. For all of the Children of the Light, not just those that have come into hiding here. We still look to the day that Wind Country can be freed from this darkness and brought back into the Light. And for that day to come, I certainly need to become stronger...", he looked at the ground again, nervously shuffling his feet. "We all do." He took several steps, his gaze going back to Sakaze for a moment with another affirmative nod. "I won't be gone forever. But, as vast as this temple is, I need to train. I need to convene with the Sun in Her Light, truly in it. As safe as this haven is, if I want to reach who I am needed to be, I need to be out there.", he gestured broadly to the desert above them.

"I want to be stronger. For us. For Her.", he paused again, looking to Sakaze, then back to the crowd again.

"For you."

The silence lingered for a heartbeat longer than necessary, the weight of Indra’s words settling over the gathered faithful like desert heat. Sakaze did not move at first, her veiled face unreadable as she studied him--the way his gaze flickered to the crowd, the nervous shift of his feet, the earnestness in his voice. He was sure of this, even if he was unsure of everything else, and the thought made her expression soften just a bit as she registered it. Indra was a good man, if young, with the potential to become the best among them in many ways. If she wasn't careful, he would outstrip her in terms of power--though that was a change she would welcome. If he was strong enough to back up his pacifist rhetoric, there might be a way out of this war that didn't involve putting their people in the firing line.

Then, she stepped forward. Not in challenge, but in alignment, her brass torc glinting in the dim light as she turned to address the room alongside him.

"Our Lucent speaks with a wisdom beyond his years," she said kindly, turning to give the young man before her a smile. "He often does. We have created a home here, built a community and expanded upon it. We cleared away rot and scrubbed mildew from the corners of this place and built a new center for Her faithful. But Her light does not shine here, but out there, upon friends and family, Her children that still live with fetters about their necks. Our Lucent will come back to us stronger, better, and with new life to breathe into our people. In the meantime, we will continue to build, so that he will come back to a movement worthy of Her blessing."

Her words rang out sharp and clear in the cavern, and were met with smiles and nods from those that had appeared worried and apprehensive only moments before. Indra inspired hope--a vital task in any revolution, especially one so nascent as theirs--and Sakaze was best at fanning that initial spark into a flame. Honestly, without his inspiring influence, Sakaze was not sure how long she could have held together her followers on faith and zealotry alone. Indra had a vision for the future that Sakaze hadn't considered before meeting him, and it had shaped her goals--she was no longer fighting to simply drive Iwa out, she wanted to build a village strong enough and secure enough that nothing like this could ever happen again.

She wanted to reach out to other nations and ask them to join their righteous cause, she wanted to build bridges and networks rather than simply tearing Iwa down brick by bloody brick. She wanted to save her people now, rather than simply avenge them. It was a gift he had given her over the course of their debates, though she hadn't quite clued him into her internal musings yet. She had yet to determine how to go about achieving those ends, so she stewed on them--a talent she'd grown quite adept at.

"Come back to us safely and swiftly as Her will allows, Indra," she said a bit more softly to him, as she reached out one hand and placed it upon his shoulder. "And when you come back, we will drive Iwa from these lands... by hook or by crook."

Sakaze seemed to very rapidly sort through her opinions on this, trying to land somewhere. When she stepped forward and began to speak, a part of Indra recoiled, though not visibly. This was his moment, and these were his people - even if some of them were ideologically on loan to him from Sakaze - and her stepping into the spotlight in the moment rustled something within him. Perhaps it was simply their dynamic, ever since their first interaction Indra and Sakaze had been at odds, and while Sakaze seemed to have bent the knee over the months there had still been ample moments in which they disagreed...sometimes vehemently. It didn't help that the prophecy they had found had come with additional insights to Indra alone. It wasn't a very proper response for a boy who was supposed to be a religious leader, but it was certainly an expected response for a boy his age. The defensiveness he felt would have to be assuaged, pushed down into his gut in order not to make a scene or offend anyone. But in the moment, he certainly felt it, the need to compete.

Whatever Sakaze said initially did not really compute in his brain. Instead, the initial defensiveness would fade away into guilt, and then into wondering. Was this really him? Or the silent beast in his gut lurking behind every thought? Was he jealous? Paranoid? Or being fooled by the shadows in the back of his mind? It was hard to tell.

Nonetheless, she'd place her hand on his shoulder and he'd check back into reality, nodding to what she said momentarily and then laughing slightly.

"The good news is, I won't be gone for long, at least for now. For the past year or so, I've left only for short periods. A day, maybe two. But rarely longer than that. I've come back often, and spent more time here than anyone else. At first, it was to ensure we could full excavate the temple but with that done...I feel comfortable taking some time.", this time he did not look at Sakaze, but his mind was tuned into her soul searching for how she'd response.

"I'll take a month or so at first. Come back for a few days, then perhaps longer each time after. When I return, I'll hopefully have more people with me. And when I leave, I hope the fighters among you will sometimes accompany me for training. But, my time hidden away in the temple is coming to an end. Which means you all must rely on and support each other. I hope that isn't asking too much.", he'd smile, his eyes scanning the crowd, and then take a deep bow. Signalling to them all he would have nothing further to say.

"I hope that's alright.", he'd mutter to Sakaze, not expecting she'd have anything but approval given her initial statements.

Sakaze held back just a moment and allowed Indra to speak to the people, smiling as he seemed to come out of his shell and into his own in a position of public scrutiny. Indra was good at one-on-one conversations, and tended to excel in philosophical or religious debates--they'd certainly spent hours debating theology and the finer points of canonical law when it came to Yuumegure--but the ability to inspire the people was one that he'd struggled with. Not because he was bad at it, but because he did not feel comfortable in that kind of spotlight.

Sakaze was beginning to see how the future of their movement might take shape, and it was a beautiful vision--Indra could go around, gathering supporters and recruiting key individuals, while Sakaze helped establish popular support with her fiery speeches and charismatic nature. It would take time and effort on both their parts, with Sakaze needing to learn how to tone down her bloodthirsty desire for revenge and Indra needing to let go of his purely pacifist ideals if they wanted to get anything done, but it was something that could be accomplished.

"It is quite alright, Indra. Go. Come back to us stronger. And if you ever get lonely, my people can run this place without me for a couple weeks--I'd love to train with you at some point," She said with warmth in her voice, patting his shoulder reassuringly. "In the meantime, there is still work to do! Let's keep up the pace," she said as she turned back to the crowd, a smile on her lips.
