The mission into Owl Country had been successful so far for Michi and Shizuo, shinobi of Iwagakure no Sato. The pair had been able to eliminate a vicious toad spirit from the border of the country which had established control of the area for near a century causing problems for any who stumbled into its territory. After a struggle which had seen Michi blowing the frog into chunks and draining the swamp, the owl who had stumbled upon them, Tamotsu, had gone off to request an audience with the Owl King for the two. A foreboding sense of dread had overtaken Michi as the oversized owl flew off and became a speck in the sky. Rather than ignore his gut feeling, he decided to act on it and begin establishing a foothold for Iwagakure in case his fears came true.
Michi had immediately switched gears to surveying the land for a forward operating base for the duo. The remains of the toad sat smoking in the basin of the lake and the smell wafting off of it reminded him more of chicken than he would ever admit aloud. Him being hungry after the fight only made the feeling even worse but he'd choke down some rations to alleviate the speck of hunger gnawing at his stomach. The trees closest to the lake had been knocked over due to the fighting and would serve as perfect lumber to create a frame for the building. The island in the middle of drained swamp was the obvious choice and with a little bit of terrakinesis, he had cleared the unneeded debris generated from his fight and created an area for them to begin construction.
The humidity of the swamp persisted even though he had removed all of the swamp water. Beads of sweat formed upon Michi's forehead and dripped down the side of his face as he ran his hands back through his hair and away from his face. His tunic top clung to him, partially soaked in swamp water, and the combination with the humidity had him peeling it off and tossing it on the island. The ruby red scales covering his torso glistened with sweat in the sun as he began to move towards the lake edge to gather some trees to cut into smaller, more manageable pieces of wood.
"I'll go get some logs, you mind cooking up some of the rations? I'm starving after fighting that stupid frog."

As Michi surveyed the area, Shizuo took a more...self-centered approach. He felt disgusting covered in toad guts and swamp muck, so he flew through a short set of seals and created a dense orb of suiton. The jounin held it over hit head and popped it with a finger, creating a makeshift shower that thankfully rinsed away most of the gunk that clung to his skin. He took extra care to wash his hair, though deep down he knew that without shampoo his snow white hair had no hope of being clean. He was considering creating a second suiton orb when Michi called out to him, and he gave a short sigh through his nose at the bannin's request. The man was serious about creating a base, much to Shizuo's bemusement. He turned to tell him as much, but stopped in his tracks.
Oh. Oh.
Those scales were glorious. Stunning, strange, and beautiful. Shizuo had only seen glimpses of them through Michi's clothes during their ordeal with the owls and the toad, but he hadn't thought much of them at the time. Now that he saw the scales in their full glory he was interested, and in more ways than one. Not only that but the scales only magnified how toned - ripped - Michi was. The jounin shook his head, deciding now was not the time to admire his comrade who was also technically his superior. Besides, he was still annoyed that the other man wanted to immediately create a base in this hellhole.
"Or," he retorted, "instead of making base here we can eat quickly and continue to scout the area. There's probably better places to set up than here."

Michi felt his eye twitch as Shizuo piped up with a different suggestion of what to do instead. He felt a vein twitch in annoyance along his forehead as he turned around and leveled an unimpressed look at the jounin. The man had cleaned up, if only to remove the frog bits from his person and hair, looking much better than he had a few moments ago. He crossed his arms across his chest and his scale coated pectorals flexed as he did so.
"Maybe but that toad was certain to scare off any other predators in the area. Meaning the only thing we'll have to deal with will be those owls when they return." Michi replied, his lips puckering at the top of having to fight again so soon. Even if they did move to somewhere else, they were giant owls with giant owl eyes who could see for miles. There was little place they could do so why not fortify what they already controlled?
"What's for lunch, chef?"

Shizuo was prepared to argue and tear apart Michi's reasoning. Just because the toad was a huge nuisance with an intimidating presence didn't mean that there wasn't anything else lurking in the area. Now that the toad was gone, other predators might treat its absence as an opportunity to set up base there. But instead of giving any kind of retort the jounin gave a defeated sigh when the thought crossed his mind that perhaps the two of them could be considered "new opportunistic predators" in this scenario.
When Michi asked him to cook for a second time, Shizuo grimaced. The swamp had a sort of putrid ambiance that didn't provide anywhere near a suitable setting for a meal. Part of him grumbled that he didn't want his first meal with the man to be rations in a dirty swamp. Another part chastised him for the thought. Shizuo shrugged off a bag that had miraculously stayed slung across his back throughout the fight. He rummaged in it for a while before pulling out a small scroll. "Jerky and dried fruit for snacks. Could make a stew. There's a few canned beverages in here, too, but I don't remember what."
Within the next twenty minutes Shizuo had settled in a relatively dry area and had a small fire going. A pot hung over the flames and he was finishing cutting up vegetables and potatoes to throw into the soup base. Every so often he glanced over at Michi, watching the bannin work on building a base. "Have you done this before?" Shizuo asked dubiously, trying to gauge whether or not Michi actually knew what he was doing.

The list of food options made Michi's face droop into a frown. Well, that wasn't ideal. Hadn't he packed some rations or sealed some food away? Weren't Space-Time users able to just pull stuff out of thin air? Michi was certain Shizuo was holding back on him but pursed his lips into a pout. "Anything's better than nothing. Or we can cook up the fat frog but that's..." His gaze drifted over to the corpse as he looked down his nose at it.
"I'd rather not." Michi mimed retching the contents of his stomach before turning back towards the downed lumber and getting to his own tasks while Shizuo worked on trying to make something out of nothing from their pitiful lack of rations. The soft glow of chakra enveloped Michi as he made slicing motions with his fingers towards the thick logs. Gashes of wind sliced through the wood as if it was paper giving Michi plenty to begin building a meager bushcraft building out of. He could dig some of the gross mud out of the dried up lake too to fortify it but the area already stunk. Digging up whatever was trapped in the mud was certain to only made the area worse and Michi had already had enough of today.
Eventually he was pulled from his thoughts by Shizuo once more and rolled his eyes at the white haired man's question.
"Of course. Who do you think has been out here on the fringes subjugating all these countries under the Tsuchikage's orders?" Michi sarcastically answered the question as if it was widely known the extent of his escapades abroad. "This one is going to be the most annoying yet though. Compared to the others, this place is like a hidden village. Most countries are completely lawless or torn apart since the War but this place's leader has managed to keep everything from falling apart here. For now, we just need to establish friendly communication and somewhere safe to sleep. There's no way I'm moving from here without some grub, shut eye, and maybe a shower."

Shizuo scrunched up his face in exaggerated awe, his lips forming a tiny o as his eyes squinted. The jounin then he raised his hands and mockingly wiggled his fingers in Michi's direction for good measure. The details of Iwagakure's exploits abroad were a strictly need-to-know basis, and before this mission Shizuo was not on the shortlist of uber-important shinobi. After all, he was still a jounin; despite his position in the research institute and his work with jinchuuriki in recent years, he wasn't officially the best of the best. He hoped being included on this mission wasn't the catalyst to change that, but he wouldn't be surprised if the higher ups had that in mind. Shizuo preferred to flee from the responsibility that came with becoming a bannin.
At the mention of food, the jounin returned his attention to the task at hand. For a while he considered using the frog's bones to make a broth, but he decided against it. If Michi actually retched, he'd lose it. Medic or not, he couldn't stand the sight and smell of vomit. Before long the area smelled marginally better thanks to the aroma of dinner. And as he cooked, he talked. "The leader is a spirit, right? Worst case scenario I subdue him with tenku. I'd prefer not to go that route though." The jounin rambled a bit after that, mentioning his experience with a few of Iwagakure's jinchuuriki. His voice wavered a bit at certain points; those failures still haunted him. As the stew came to a boil, he tapped the wakizashi he had laid across his lap. "I don't think I'll be able to sleep much here. Not unless you build this base of yours as an actual fortress."
Shizuo's lips twisted into a frown as he scrutinized Michi's progress. "You know how to build a shower? Out of logs?" His tone oozed with skepticism. Shizuo may have been able to - hopefully - work a miracle with dinner, but there was no way Michi could build such a luxury out here in the wilderness, no matter his credentials. He raised his palm towards the bannin and added, "If you need me to rinse you off, just say so."

Michi had to actively work to keep his upper lip from involuntarily curling into a snarl at Shizuo's mocking gesture while he worked at stacking the sliced logs into organized piles for him begin to work on forming some sort of shelter to shield them from the elements. While it was cool now, he was certain the temperature was going to plummet by the time night actually approached as they were still far enough north for snow to be a threat. Although Michi would be fine thanks to the ambient heat radiating off of him, the bannin was willing to bet the white haired shinobi cooking dinner behind him wouldn't care to suffer from being uncomfortable due to being snowed on in the middle of the night.
By the time Shizuo began working on dinner in earnest, Michi had infused the air around them and had began manipulating the lumber through gusts of wind. His fingers danced as if he was conducting an orchestra while pieces of lumber settled next to each other while guided by his grace. The bannin listed to Shizuo ramble on for a moment and a small smile came across his mouth at the notion they'd be able to just force Yeritai to bend the knee so easily. Michi had no doubt he could tear through the rank-and-file of the king's forces and even whatever elites they possessed but the king himself was something equivalent to a Genma in sheer power. It'd take at least both of them attempting to restrain the monstrously strong spirit and even then Michi wasn't sure how it would turn off if any other forces decided to interrupt; he would much prefer diplomacy in the end. Thankfully, Shizuo was of a similar mind it seemed.
Michi's arms came down causing several intersecting logs to come together into a sturdy roof through his spoiled usage of kinesis. While the hut had only an empty door frame, he was certain he could find another piece of lumber to function as a door later on but his rumbling stomach demanded something to fill it. The bannin turned back to Shizuo with an annoyed look on his face. "Listen, princess, you'll get what you get for right now. I ain't no engineer and until we someone out here who is, you're stuck with my little shit hole." Michi stomped towards Shizuo and poked him in the chest lightly. "Either that or you can sleep in the trees. And, for the record, I was gonna use some Suiton to rinse off anyway! I'm better at it than you anyway, tsk. Where's dinner?"
Michi stomped away from the wooden structure and Shizuo towards the fire in search of whatever it was the jounin had smelling so good he was slightly worried they'd draw other predators towards them. Thoughts for later. Fishing some utensils from his pack and filling a bowl, Michi raised a rock seat from the island mound with an upward wave of his hand and sat down for the first time today. Popping some food into his mouth, Michi savored it for a moment before deciding it was best to compliment the cook.
"Tastes good, good job. You can rinse me off later."

...Princess?
Shizuo's face contorted with confusion and incredulity. The man didn't exactly command unassailable respect; compared to the shinobi who actually carried the title of bannin, Shizuo was exceedingly laid back and approachable. Still, there was an understanding that, despite his rank on paper, he definitely was regarded highly. He wasn't one to tout his credentials on his forehead - tamer of one of the Great Evils, top junchuuriki researcher and handler, and head of the village's Tenkujutsu Research Division, most notably - because all of that was rather well known. All of that to say: no one, no professional, had ever addressed him as princess.
When Kinomichi poked his chest, the jounin's eyes flickered momentarily to the offending finger. His head gave an involuntary shake, jerking backwards slightly at the sudden touch. He looked into the distance as if asking an imaginary audience, Who the fuck this guy talkin to?
He couldn't remember the last time he was so offended. Before he knew it Shizuo was on his feet, cheeks burning red. "Just because you can move the elements around all willy nilly like that does not mean you're better at suiton than I am. Bet I could out-suiton you any day of the week when it comes to technique." Expression sour, Shizuo watched as the bannin made his way over to the food. It took every ounce of self-control within him to not snatch the pot away and make Kinomichi starve.
For the time being he ignored the compliment, instead continuing his annoyed rampage. He grumpily slapped a few scoops of the stew into his own bowl while saying, "These are all big words from someone who needed to be rescued from an overgrown frog. If I'm a princess, then what does that make you? I’m more like your knight in shining armor." Normally Shizuo wasn't so combative, but something about Kinomichi made him more...fiery than usual.
A hint regarding what that something had come in the form of the bannin's final, offhand comment. It gave Shizuo pause as a shiver rocked him and settled somewhere very low in his abdomen. He wanted to refuse to recognize the familiar feeling and instead chase away the mental image of Michi naked and wet. Unfortunately for his professionalism and dignity, the rebuttal came before he could stop it. "Later, huh? Don't threaten me with a good time if you can't follow through."
He sauntered over near Michi, using the back of his free hand to push back his damp bangs. Shizuo made a show of gesturing around and asked, "So where's my seat then?"
