The staircase swallowed him whole.

Kaito counted each step—seventeen, eighteen, nineteen—as he descended, his gloved fingertips trailing the moss-slick stone wall to his right. The air thickened with every meter, heavy with the scent of wet earth and iron. Reinforced blast doors at 10-meter intervals. No visible ventilation shafts. Single-file passage. His mind cataloged the weaknesses instinctively: bottlenecks for ambushes, no escape routes if compromised. Whoever had designed these passageways had done so under the assumption that any attack would be coming from the outside attempting to push in--a fair assumption, given ANBU's general commitment to opsec and how hard it was to find any of the entrances to the underground tunnel network unless you knew where you were going.

He paused at the third landing, tilting his head. Distant dripping echoed—a leak in the pipes overhead. West side, 25 meters ahead. Useless intel, but his senses tracked it anyway. Old habits from the Kiri siege: map the environment, identify variables, discard irrelevancies. His body remembered crouching in flooded trenches, roots coiled beneath his palms like sleeping serpents. Now, the only roots here were dead stone and steel.

The final door loomed, its surface etched with the ANBU symbol. No handle. No keyhole. A test, then. Kaito pressed his palm to the cold metal, channeling a pulse of chakra—precise, controlled—and felt the seal matrix beneath vibrate in response. A click. The door slid open with a serpentine hiss. His eyes swept the room. Sand pit (chakra-absorbing composite, likely Suna imports). Weapon racks (blunt training variants only). A dummy fort constructed of treated oak in the northeast corner. No shadows. No blind spots. Harsh white light from overhead rods eliminated tactical concealment.

All in all, an acceptable place for the special operations division to train up new recruits physically, if not with higher-rank jutsu--those tended to be explosive anyhow, and explosions combined with an underground facility was probably not the best duo.

He set his flak jacket on the bench, folding it crisply. The air bit at his exposed arms, raising goosebumps he ignored. The ambient temperature was somewhere around 12°C. Suboptimal for muscle efficiency, but that could be mitigated with a proper warmup--and seeing as he had arrived at 0530 when the captain had set the training for 0600, it looked like he had some time to get his blood pumping.

Kaito dropped into a one-handed handstand, his breathing steady as he began counting push-ups. He'd been working on his arm, shoulder, and core strength for a while now, and he grinned as he felt the results--when he'd first started these, he could barely pull off one vertical pushup, and now he was closing in on twenty-five per set. His muscles burned, but the pain was data, not distraction. He’d lagged behind during last week’s endurance drills—0.8 seconds slower on the obstacle course, a 12% drop in grip strength after 90 minutes. Correctable deficits, especially when you take into account the miserable cold that had stopped up his nose and made it feel like he was moving through water for days.

At 0553, he switched to kata forms. Palm strikes snapped against the air, kicks precise enough to gauge wind resistance. The dummy fort’s splintered edges caught his eye mid-spin. Structural weakness: central support beam. A single strike at a 45-degree angle would collapse the upper platform. He filed it away.

By 0559, sweat traced his spine. He stilled, centering his breath, and brought his body down into a seiza in the center of the sand pit as he awaited Captain Tengu's arrival.

Akemi rolled over and hissed at the sting on her back. She had fallen asleep on her left side, partially on her stomach, to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on her new tattoos. Yawning she stretched out like a cat, arching her back and elongating her arms and legs, feeling multiple pops and cracks along her body. Gently laying flat again she turned her head and looked to her alarm clock, reading 5am on the dot. She grumbled cursing Takeshi’s name. The night before she had received a missive to meet him for training in the underground facilities for 6am. This was problematic seeing as she wasn’t a morning person, and she was worried about training with her new ink. But captain’s orders, not that she liked referring to him as such.

She got out of bed and upon rolling her neck decided she needed to stretch. She spent fifteen minutes going through various yoga poses such as Cat Cow, child’s pose, downward dog, cobra, warrior’s stance and sun salutations; rolling her stiff joints as she went. Once her body felt loose, it felt like a good idea to warm up her muscles to prepare for training. She didn’t know the specifics, but she did know her strengths and it was better to have the blood flowing. She turned to her punching bag practicing basic strikes and kicks, switching from offense to defense. Once she had a decent sweat going, she looked at the clock again, it read 5:30am. “Shit.” She hurriedly got dressed in black low rise biker shorts and a black sports bra; wrapping her feet, shins, hands and forearms as she went. In this outfit all three of Akemi’s tattoos were visible. She slid on her runners and checked her second skin one last time, it seemed to be healing well and there was nothing leaking or any excessive plasma in the fluid. Putting her hair in a high ponytail she set off at a jog for facility 57.

Jogging through headquarters she noticed a few people here and there, some more awake than others, she nodded at them as she went. She wasn’t in a rush per say but she didn’t want to be late to her first official ANBU training. She came to a staircase; it loomed over her and encased her in shadows. As she descended, she could feel the cold air settling on her skin, it made the hairs on the back of her neck tingle. As Akemi approached the door, she could hear someone on the other side of it sounding like they had already gotten started. ‘Figure’s he’d get here early.’ Akemi studied the door looking for a handle only to find there wasn’t one. She placed her hand on it and closed her eyes, reaching out with her senses for any sort of pulse of trail she could follow. She felt lingering traces of chakra and carefully pumped her own through it, following in presumably Takeshi’s steps.

The door creaked open as she opened her eyes. She took note of the high ceilings and bright white light. There would be very little shadow play in here for her. There was also a weapon rack with blunt weapons for training purposes and a dummy fort like what she had at the Nara compound. All in all, it was a basic set up and seemed fitting to get her feet wet with. As she continued to visually scour the room, her eyes settled on the sand pit and the young child in front of her sitting in the sand. His eyes were closed, and he was in some sort of stance, waiting. Presumably also for Takeshi. She cleared her throat and started to move towards the sand pit and the boy. He had brown long hair and tan skin. He reminded her of Kohaku to be honest, the coloring very similar to her friend from the Senju clan. She reached the edge of the sand pit and crouched down, so they were at eye level, though he was seated in the middle. “I was expecting Take – Tengu. I’m supposed to meet him here for training. I’m Shishi, but you can also call me Akemi.” She smiled in the boy’s direction assessing his physical stature. He was young, that was for certain, younger than her. But he seemed to be in good shape, and there was something about his posture that made Akemi feel like he had known about her presence since she put her hand on the door. This would be interesting.

Takeshi started his day as he did most mornings, waking at 0430 after getting a crisp 3 hours of sleep. There would be other naps staggered throughout the day to ensure he received the required rest for muscle recovery. Waking, he slipped out of bed, beginning some dynamic stretches to get his body moving before fastening a 100lbs weighted vest and then 50lbs ankle weights to each leg. He would begin with a set of 40 pull ups while keeping his legs perpendicular to himself, engaging his core the entire time. The movements were slow and controlled, meticulously engaging his back muscles, his forearms and his entire core as he twisted his hips from side to side at the top of each repetition.

Upon completing pull ups, he would perform a set of 150 push ups at a moderate speed before finishing with a set of 50 mountain climbers. By now his body was feeling thoroughly warm, blood pumping through his veins causing his muscles to swell with definition and vascularity. A simple set of 50 squats was next, each one with an alternating knee raise before finally he ended his morning warm up with a sequence of slowed Jyuuken Kata, focusing on his breathing and ensuring he maintained full range of motion, stretching his warmed body as he held each pose.

Dressing, Takeshi wore grey sweatpants, a black muscle shirt and grey arm and shin guards. As usual, he never went anywhere without his Dao-style sword at his left hip and a ring of black steel around a brilliant red gem on his left middle finger. His kunai holster he wore on his right thigh. Moving from his room to the Anbu kitchens he would enjoy a cup of tea and a nutrient packed protein drink as well as some rice and fish. He would spend some time looking over reports and sending out assignments, before he made his way over to the training area.

Entering the room at precisely 0600, he noted the two newest members of Katana squad had arrived. “Good morning” he nodded to his juniors, pleased that they seemed to have introduced themselves already. “Kaito, I’d like you to help get the newest member of Katana squad up to speed. The two of you will be working together, honing your tactics and getting familiar with one another’s fighting styles” he said, looking between them each as he moved to a chest filled with various mission items and props; scrolls, flags, keys and other miscellaneous items. “We’ll start with a game of capture the flag. You two will be on defense” he stated, tossing a blue flag to Kaito. “You must defend the fort and prevent me from placing that flag in the center of the sand pit. If you can prevent me from doing so for 5 minutes (5 posts) then you win. Simple, right?” he said, smirking. It may have seemed like a childish game, but it was one of many simple drills that could hone a squads teamwork and translate well to the types of missions they might encounter.

Kaito’s eyes flicked to the door while still behind his lids as the barrier hissed shut behind Akemi, though he didn’t shift his stance. He’d cataloged her chakra signature the moment her palm touched the seal--the cool, dark chakra that marked the Nara clan extremely evident--and chose not to open his eyes until she moved directly in front of him, cataloguing every aspect of her sound. The breath, the steps, the way her muscles tensed and shifted beneath her skin--things that were normally imperceptible in the world above were amplified in this quiet, underground space.

(Some sequestered part of his mind was anxious--he tried not to go underground if he could help it, and the weight of several hundred tons of dirt above his head was easier to deal with when he was being hyper-analytical, but that wasn't something he could afford to care about right now.)

There was a slight hitch in her motions--nothing that would really impede her movements, but her movements shifted a bit oddly when she turned to approach him. Something to do with her ribs, perhaps a pulled muscle or a tattoo fresh from the pen, but, that wasn't as important as whether it would have any tactical disadvantage.

Kaito's deep brown eyes opened to meet the Nara's, inclining his head in a respectful greeting as she squatted down to be on the same level as he was. "Hello, Akemi-san. My codename is Tora, but in private please call me Kaito," he responded amicably, giving her what he'd been told was his most genial smile. Facial expressions didn't come easy to the young man, but he gave it his best shot because his blank expressions tended to "creep people out." His voice was higher and reedier than he'd like it to be--the pitfalls of puberty, but he did his best to maintain an even tone.

"Tengu-taicho is always punctual to the second. He should be here momen--" he cut himself off as the door opened again, admitting the pale-faced Hyuuga and proving Kaito's timing, once again, to be impeccable. The young Senju stood effortlessly from his seiza, immediately dropping into parade rest with his hands clasped behind his back and his feet shoulder width apart. Every movement he made was crisp, clean, and technically immaculate--when one was considered one of the prodigies of the Senju clan, even from a branch family, one could not be seen being anything less.

"Yes sir, Tengu-taicho," he responded to the eldest of those assembled, glancing over at the intense musculature of the Nara that had joined them for what he believed was going to be a solo training session. Not that it mattered much. In fact, it may be a good way for him to establish a rapport with the team--no, focus, no going off on tangents. She was stronger than him by a good margin, that much was apparent, with a defined musculature that came with maturity. More than likely an accomplished Taijutsu specialist, and if he knew anything about the Nara she'd find a way to incorporate the shadows that the clan was renowned for.

His attention drifted back to the captain when he caught movement out of the corner of his eye, and his hand instinctually shot up to catch the bright blue flag that had been thrown his way. He paused as he held it, listening to the captain's instructions, and cut his eyes over to Akemi when the captain had finished explaining the rules for the exercise. A simple capture the flag game was one thing, but this was against the captain-commander of the entire ANBU and he knew that it was going to be anything but simple. The young man concentrated for a moment before a casing of wood seemed to erupt from underneath him, closing around him and encasing him for just a moment before the wood seemed to shrink-wrap around his body and take on a hard, laquered sheen before forming into a full set of samurai-like armor, with the Senju crest emblazoned on the back at 45 [Speed] and [Strength].

"Understood, Captain. Shall we begin now, or can we have a moment to prepare?" he asked, his tone as polite and straightforward as ever despite the powerful armor that now encased him.

Akemi watched Kaito as he introduced himself. He seemed incredibly young, and with his eyes open it was obvious now that he was in fact a Senju. Having worked with Kohaku for years, Akemi knew just how useful that would be. He seemed a little stiff socially, but that could just be because of his age. Assessing his physicality, she found him to be lean and slight, meaning he was not tai based. She couldn’t feel waves of power coming from him but there were traces of something, and as she stared into his eyes, she saw the potential for power within him and a dedication to achieve it. The fact that he wasn’t surprised or caught off guard by her entrance told Akemi that he was uniquely attuned to his surroundings. She nodded her head towards him and smiled. “It’s nice to meet you Kaito. I look forward to working with you.” As she made a move to stand up, she heard the door open, turning her head towards the door she saw Takeshi and her breath caught slightly in her throat. She pushed away memories of their last encounter, needing to remain professional and focused. She came to stand beside Kaito, her feet shoulder width apart, hands behind her back and shoulders squared. “Good morning, Captain.” She nodded her head at him, keeping her face calm and neutral.

She listened intently as Takeshi broke down the rules of the game, rolling her eyes at how simple he made it seem. She gathered he would probably hold back like he did at the Nara compound, not wanting to hurt anyone and wanting to see how Akemi and Kaito worked together. Still, given Takeshi’s impressive physique and what she saw of his techniques and strength that day, their chances were slim. Knowing that Akemi sorted through her resources for what would be most effective. If Kaito were to provide support and protect the flag he held, Akemi could use her Toryu and sporadically input her katon as needed. Takeshi’s physical strength far outmatched Akemi’s meaning bonebreaker would be useless, not to mention counter productive. The point was to subdue not to seriously injure, not that she could at this stage anyway.

She watched as Kaito erupted wooden armour all over his body, it was something Kohaku used to do when he was expecting to be in close quarters with someone. It was effective at minimizing damage depending on your opponent’s output. Following Kaito’s lead Akemi exerted tension all throughout her body, feeling her muscles expand and then tightly drawing back into her. She could feel her muscles harden exponentially beneath her skin as it pulled tight around them. As her body settled Akemi rolled her shoulders and cracked her neck, feeling the effects of her skin becoming like stone. Her skin appeared hardened and durable to those looking at her. She kicked her runners off to the side and started to stretch out the joints in her hands and her feet.

She looked back to Takeshi with a steely determination in her eyes. “Capture the flag should be fun. I’m sure Tora and I can think of something to trip you up for a little while at least.” She smirked at Takeshi, even though she knew it would be near impossible to win, she was determined to give it her best and have fun with it. Looking to Kaito she smiled warmly at him. “Whatcha say Toru?” She gestured for the young man to follow her closer to middle of the sand pit, stopping at a 5 metre radius from where the flag would be. “I was thinking that you could lay some sort of kindling down in a 5 meter diameter around where Tengu needs to go and then head off to the fort and fortify the flag. While you're protecting the flag, I can engage Tengu and try to prevent him from planting the flag should he get it from you. What do you think?"

When Akemi turned to him with a warm smile and a playful tone, he nodded, his expression neutral but not unfriendly. “Yes, that isn't a bad strategy--although, if we work together rather than splitting up, I think our chances of success greatly increase” he said with a smile, turning his head back to the area they needed to defend

Kaito's eyes wandered over to the fort that they'd been ordered to defend, presumably to hide the flag within, and considered the sandpit that they currently stood on. With a pulse of chakra and a stomp, he sent a nest of sharp brambles under the ground he was standing on in the center of the sand pit--precisely where Captain Tengu would need to set foot if he intended to plant the flag that Kaito was currently holding.

"Firstly, I've already set a trap here, it will be difficult to plant the flag without suffering injury--although his Byakugan could prove troublesome when it comes to that kind of thing. The most effective tactic I can think of is to flood the field," the young man expounded as he began walking, trusting that Akemi would be following him. There wasn't time to play the polite young man, and he allowed the other him to shine through. The one who'd been on a battlefield of one kind or another since he was 6, the one who'd allowed him to sink his kunai into the necks of grown men who thought they'd found an easy mark--Kaito liked to think of it as his Ninja persona. All calm, all analysis, and none of the pesky social niceties that tended to get in the way of accomplishing a goal as efficiently as possible.

As he walked a tree sprouted up next to him before resolving into a wooden copy of himself, that quickly lost its bark-like coloration and became a perfect clone that walked beside him, both cloaked in the Senju Armor that was likely his only chance to stand up to Takeshi's overwhelming taijutsu superiority. Kaito moved so that he was standing between Takeshi and the Guardian, and discreetly held out his flag. The clone also happened to be holding the same blue flag, which it calmly traded with the original before it tucked the flag in its waistband on the right side just as Kaito did the exact same thing.

"Misdirection will up our chances as well," he commented quietly as he looked back at Akemi with a small smile before concentrating for another moment, causing what appeared to be thick roots to grow from his lower legs and pierce the ground. At the same time the clone jumped onto the wall of the fort and ran up the side, vaulting over the parapet and into the wooden fort out of sight. The true Kaito's face became thick with black markings that seemed almost like stylized makeup, and his eyes shifted into a bright golden coloration as he activated his Senpu Mokuton • Bodhisattva’s Wisdom. It wasn't comparable to the Byakugan for range or effect, but it would last long enough for him to know the second anyone came within 60 meters of himself. A bit chakra-intensive, but he wasn't called the Senju prodigy for nothing--he still had quite a bit of stamina left in the tank for the actual fight to come, thanks to his own high [Control].

"Obviously, Tengu-Taicho has me totally outgunned when it comes to Taijutsu, but last I checked my Ninjutsu are a little more powerful than his," he murmured as he stepped out of the roots, causing them to break away from his legs and wither into the ground. "If you're as strong as you look, we might be able to trip him up long enough to succeed here. We can go inside the fort and do some more prep work within. Your Eiketsu should be particularly useful in at least slowing him down."

Akemi assessed Kaito as he explained his stance on their approach, it was a sound strategy. Two ninjas harassing Takeshi would always be better than one, she nodded her head to him in agreement and watched as Kaito as he summoned the bramble trap, something she remembered Kohaku doing often during their drills. “That’ll come in handy, once activated I can light it on fire to slow him down a little should he get the flag.” She hummed towards young man, agreeing that flooding the field would be to their advantage. The more time Takeshi spent wading through obstacles the better it was for them.

As Kaito moved around the field, Akemi followed dutifully, curious to see what he came up with. She was impressed when he summoned a guardian clone of himself and switched out the flags. His analysis and execution so far put him well above Akemi, who was mostly known to headbutt her way through problems. She returned Kaito’s smile as his jutsu finished and his guardian took off, he looked proud at his accomplishment, as he should. “That’s brilliant Tora. I must say, I’m very impressed. I’m glad to be on your team.” Kohaku and Eiji weren’t great with strategy, their power lay in supporting Akemi while she took the brunt of whatever force they had been up against. It’s not to say it wasn’t effective, but Akemi was grateful to have a well working mind besides her own come up with some way through this.

She listened as he listed off Takeshi’s strength in taijutsu and potential weakness with ninjutsu, it was good to know. Although she knew first-hand he could handle her flames, with the absorbing sands nearby though she wouldn’t have to worry as much about burning anything down and could let loose with her fire. Akemi chuckled at Kaito’s assessment of her form. “I’m probably a little stronger than I look, but Takeshi can still kick my ass. I can put up a good fight however and use the shadows to my advantage. Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to turn him into my little puppet for awhile.” She winked a Kaito, a big grin across her face. Harassing Takeshi was something that very quickly brought joy into her life, and planning how to take him down with Kaito got her excited. The notion of being on a team with people as talented, or even more talented as she was noticing, than her felt good. Gave her something real to work towards and made her feel like she didn’t have to hold back as much as she had been. “Let’s go to the fort and lay down some exploding tags and decoys as we go. I’ll need a decent place inside where Takeshi is bound to come upon so I can link his shadow to mine and make him dance.” She snickered softly as she bumped her arm with Kaito’s as she headed for the fort. Kaito seemed quite serious, she would have fun wreaking havoc with him in their off time.

Kaito nodded at Akemi’s assessment, his golden eyes flicking toward the fort as he considered her words. “Fire could work,” he agreed, his tone thoughtful. “But we’ll need to time it carefully. If we light the brambles too early, he’ll just avoid them. If we wait too long, he might already have the flag.

He looked a bit startled as she bumped him with her arm, internally wondering why she would do such a thing--maybe it was one of those camaraderie things that he'd never really gotten. He'd never had what you could call "friends" in the academy. Most of his peers shut him out simply due to his genius, and most of them not intentionally, they'd just assumed he wouldn't be interested in playing games when he spent most of his time reviewing scrolls and learning everything he could about tactics and strategy.

Kaito tilted his head slightly at Akemi’s praise, his golden Senpu eyes narrowing in a flicker of mild surprise. Still, he gave her a curt nod, his tone pragmatic but not unappreciative. “Teamwork is force multiplication. One mind can’t account for every variable. Your mention of fire-based jutsu has given me quite a few ideas already,” he said, trying to return the compliment as best he could. After all, that's what you were supposed to do with your teammates, right?

As they moved toward the fort, Kaito’s clone was already at work inside. The clone moved with silent efficiency, its wooden armor creaking faintly as it sprinted along the fort’s enclosed hallway. With a flick of its wrist, it formed the first set of ten wooden kunai using [Mokuton • Wood Weapon Creation], the blades materializing in its grip with a muted snap of chakra. One by one, it embedded them into the walls at eye level, spacing them evenly along the corridor. The clone repeated the process, conjuring another ten kunai and wedging them into strategic points—doorframes, blind corners, and chokeholds where movement would be restricted.

Once it had finished its first task, the Guardian leapt to the interior courtyard, slamming his foot down on the ground in an application of [Mokuton • Bramblepatch], before leaping up into the ceiling of the interior pagoda and hiding within the rafters. The Byakugan would normally render such a thing useless, but Kaito intended to keep captain Tengu away from his clone as long as he could--and the captain would have no way of knowing which one was the real Kaito, or which one possessed the real flag.

Meanwhile, the real Kaito and Akemi worked in tandem. Kaito retrieved his five explosive tags from his equipment pouch, his fingers moving deftly as he tied each tag to the loop at the pommel of select kunai. “These can be pulled and thrown,” he explained to Akemi, his golden Senpu eyes glinting in the harsh light, “or detonated in place if he triggers them.” He left a few kunai untagged, creating a mix of potential weapons and throwable explosives.

Kaito stepped aside to let Akemi layer her own explosive tags onto the remaining kunai. “I had my Guardian plant a Bramblepatch in the central courtyard as well, so we have some layers for the trap,” he explained, gesturing to the courtyard’s center where his clone's earlier stomp had seeded the trap.

They’ll only erupt when I activate them. If he steps there, the spikes should pin him long enough for us to strike, but our first goal should be to take up as much of his time as we possibly can,” he said as he turned to face the Nara, a calculating expression on his face. His gaze swept the fort’s interior, calculating angles and fallback points. “We’ll funnel him into the hallway first. The tagged kunai here are primed to blow if he tries to disarm them--or if we need to collapse the corridor. Lighting's more sparse in the hallway as well, so you should have plenty of shadow to work with.

Akemi watched as Kaito’s mind whirred behind his eyes, it was mesmerizing and slightly concerning. “I agree the timing is important. It would have to be almost simultaneous in nature between him stepping on the patch, you activating it and me lighting it.” Her eyes narrowed as she remembered her fight with Takeshi in the Nara compound, that could pose several problems. “Tengu knows how to use fuuton, quite well if my memory serves me. He could easily deter my flames. But if I’m in there, I can potentially goad him in further as a hail mary with my taijutsu. I don’t mind a little self-inflicted injury.” Her main focus would have to be her eiketsu, katon would work well as a surprise but it would be short lived. Her taijutsu is a temporary but useful distraction as a last resort, but she needed to be able to hold him. And her best chance to do that would be in the fort.

She followed Kaito into the fort and watched as he placed kunai and exploding tags taking note of the locations, if their game gave way to chase in the halls this would be useful to try and blindside Takeshi with. Once the young man ran out of kunai and tags Akemi started to place her own in a similar pattern throughout the halls until she too ran out of both kunai and tags. Listening to him explain about the patch in the middle Akemi’s eyes shone brightly. “In an enclosed space in the courtyard would be our best bet to catch him with my katon. I have a few jutsu that should be fast enough to surprise him if I’m not directly in sight of him.” She looked around the courtyard for openings and nooks she could hide in and found one one floor up adjacent to the courtyard. She would prefer to be on the ground floor, but that would do in a pinch.

Kaito’s planning and tactical strategy were amazing for someone his age. Akemi felt honored to work alongside him. Takeshi apparently had a knack for not only picking up crazy people, but also people with genuine incredible skill. She begrudgingly gave the man praise in her mind, still feeling embarrassed at their previous interaction. “The hallway is ground zero then, I should be able to boost my eiketsu enough to hold him for at least a little while. I’d say this is about as prepared as we can get on such short notice. So now, it’s time to have fun with it.” The smile that graced her face was sharp, reminiscent of a feline about to get into mischief. She waved Kaito to follow her to the front of the fort, it was time for the games to begin.

Takeshi smirked, enjoying Akemi’s optimism. She was certainly the most up-beat member of Katana squad. He wondered if her spirit would break as she experienced greater hardships. She was used to being exceptional, the most talented member of her squad yet she had never faced true tragedy like the others each had. Still, she had proven herself a talented fighter with remarkable potential. A powerful frontliner with an indominable spirit was precisely what their squad needed. It would alleviate the pressure of Takeshi having to use shadow clones to provide both a front line and sniper support. He only hoped her energy would find a way to collaborate well with the others who were each peculiar in their own way.

As Kaito formed his Mokuton armor, Takeshi observed the young prodigy. ‘He has the most potential of us all’ he noted, not for the first time. At his age, Takeshi had been a Genin and had barely been able to help fend off Kirigakure at all when they invaded, focusing mostly on protecting and guiding civilians to safety. Yet Kaito, even while he was still in the academy had displayed talents beyond that of a Chunin and had claimed dozens of Kirigakure shinobi’s lives. He had been an inspiration to all of Konoha, and it was no wonder that he continued to grow into a remarkable shinobi. Certainly, he had the talent to become a captain himself, perhaps even Commander.

“I’ll give you a few minutes to prepare” the Hyuuga said, turning to leave the room. He was being generous, each of them had seen him in combat and had some idea of what to expect from him. Yet even so, they were the two newest members to the squad and had no experience working with one another. They would need the time to understand how to coordinate properly. Takeshi lit a cigarette while he waited, holding it up against a flame emanating from his fingertip. ‘I really should develop my Katon more' he considered idly. He had learned the change in nature only as a stepping stone in order to achieve more unique and powerful elemental changes. It had taken him a year to learn the basics of all three, and he had only barely dipped his toes into developing jutsu. Lately, most of his focus had been on developing his physical might, honing his body into a deadly weapon. Sighing, he exhaled a cloud of smoke. His taijutsu would be enough to overcome many opponents but now that he was commander, he owed it to himself to develop his talents further.

Two minutes passed. “Ready or not here I come” he muttered to himself before returning to the room. He recalled, with a sense of nostalgia, playing similar games with his twin sister growing up. Though, they were often on a team, menacing their older sister Hanako with their tactics. Though Yozei was the true master of the game. Activating his Byakugan, Takeshi took in the battlefield. His eyes saw it all. “Begin!” he announced, clearly and loudly. ‘Nod bad’ he assessed, noting Kaito’s handiwork. Three chakra signatures were holed up in the fort. He had half expected Akemi to attack him head on, though it seemed instead his operatives would be working together to ambush him. That was good. In theory and Nara and a Senju should both excel at ambush tactics and stalling. And that was all they needed to do, just keep him away from the flag for five minutes.

Against him however, they would surely need to throw everything they had at him. He would need to take them seriously and prepare accordingly. Calming his mind, Takeshi approached the entrance to his opponents choke point. Chakra flowed through his body, spreading evenly out to every tenketsu point and forming a razor thin layer of chakra around him. The transparent protective barrier would form slowly, at 10 Speed yet retain a near impenetrable 50 Strength. He remained wary of any potential attack, moving within 5 meters of the entrance way. Thoughts raced through his mind, considering various strategies. Using sheer force, relying on his armor to protect him would be reckless and boring and brought him little advantage. Instead, he would use their own preparations against them. Forming hand seals, Takeshi mixed his Fuuton and Katon chakra natures together; Tiger, Dragon, Bird, Ram. Chakra surged in his stomach, and exhaling he released a cloud of ash that bellowed throughout the corridor, sure to ignite the explosive tags that lined it. Immediately he followed up with another jutsu; Ram, Bird, Tiger. His Fuuton: Wind tunnel technique would direct the ash, the explosion and the dislodged kunai into the fort with 30 Strength and Speed. The winds would continue to obscure the only entryway into the fort, effectively turning their hideout into a deathtrap of ash and fire, fueled and continuing to spread from the constant stream of wind.
Jutsu UsedShow
Byakugan Doujutsu
One of the most famed doujutsu in the world, Byakugan is the bloodline limit of the Hyuuga Clan. When active, the clan member gains 360 degree vision and Penetrative vision, allowing the Hyuuga clan to see the Tenketsu of their enemies. Their telescopic vision can be activated via jutsu. As such, the Byakugan is capable of ability channeling, allowing the Hyuuga to activate their Doujutsu techniques without hand seals. It should be noted that while using their telescopic vision the Hyuuga experiences tunnel vision, making it difficult to see their surroundings.

Prolonged usage of the Byakugan is strenuous and requires a high level of endurance. The maximum operating time a user can utilize their Byakugan at a time is equal to their Chakra Pool stat divided by 4 rounded down, to a minimum of one post. Upon reaching the max duration, the stress of using their Byakugan to it’s limit causes a cooldown period of 1/2 of the duration time, to a minimum of one post. During this cooldown period, the Byakugan cannot be activated and attempting to do so will cause physical pain. Duration is based off total posts where the Byakugan is activated, meaning users can turn it on and off to have a shorter cooldown.

[Ninpou • Chakra Armor]
C-Ranked Ninjutsu
The user channels chakra, flowing it in a thin layer across their body, including their hands and head. This armor has a strength of [50] and forms at [10] speed. This aura of chakra can also be formed on others, though only one person per cast, so long as they are within 25 meters of the user. This layer of chakra does not impede movement, normal bodily functions, or the ability to perform hand seals in any way.

*Ash Style • Scattered Coal Dust (Increased to a 10x10 meter cloud)
D-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing hand seals, the user will expel Ash from their mouth to make a cloud of about 3 meters by 3 meters at a Speed of [35] and with a Strength of [20]. This cloud will hang in the air for 3 posts before dissipating. If anyone walks through the cloud, the Ash will cling to them with [20] Strength.

Fuuton • Wind Tunnel 30 Strength, 30 Speed
D-Ranked Fuuton Jutsu
After forming a brief series of hand seals Takeshi will build up chakra manifesting a wind tunnel from within 10 meters of him. The stream of air will follow a funnel pattern that can be manifested in a variety of shapes but not manipulated after creation to serve a variety of purposes. The length of the tunnel is up to 10 meters long and 2 meters wide. This jutsu moves at a Speed and Strength equal to [Control] but does not contain the cutting passive of Fuuton. The wind tunnel will last for 2 posts after creation.

Kaito’s golden eyes flared behind the Senpu markings as the Byakugan’s telltale chakra pulse washed over his sensor range. The captain was approaching from the eastern entrance. Predictable, if nothing else--that side had the largest door and easiest point of entry. He’d positioned himself just inside the eastern hallway’s threshold, his back pressed to the cold stone wall as he waited for the captain's opening salvo, holding up a hand to stall Shishi's advance. Kaito’s golden eyes narrowed behind the black Sage markings as his sensory field prickled—Fuuton and Katon, swirling together in Takeshi’s core like twin serpents coiling to strike.

Ash Release.

"Effective, but no," he muttered to himself, channeling his own chakra as quickly as he could sans hand seals--he wasn't fast enough to keep up with a jounin's hand speed, but he didn't need to, as his channeling was among the fastest in the village. Just as the ash began to leave the captain's lips the hallway shuddered as a [Mokuton • Wood Locking Wall] erupted from the ground at 40 [Speed] and 50 [Strength], because while ash was strong against his wood style, it was slow and usually needed to be combined with Fuuton before it became a speedy threat. The barrier formed in front of Kaito, closing off the hallway he was in to the main gatehouse.

The ash cloud collided with the barrier, its incendiary payload smothering harmlessly against the wood's grainy surface, smouldering but failing to catch the wall alight. Behind the wall, the corridor and its explosive tags remained untouched, pristine. Unfortunately, the hallway to the right, where he'd set up two of his five explosive tags and Akemi had set a few as well, wasn't as lucky, and it was rocked with a series of 15 [Strength] explosions and engulfed in flame and force.

Kaito didn’t pause to savor the counter. He lunged backward, his boots skidding across stone as he retreated 20 meters at [25 Speed], putting distance between himself and the impending retaliation. His Senpu-enhanced senses tracked every shift in Takeshi’s chakra: the Hyuuga’s diaphragm flexing, lungs expanding to fuel the follow-up Fuuton technique. Now.

A simple pulse of chakra, and the Wood Locking Wall detonated on command.

[Mokuton • Splinter] shredded the barrier into a storm of razor-edged fragments, propelled outward at 50 [Speed] and 40 [Strength]. Maybe not enough to get past the Captain's armor, but if he was still in the area and breathing, it wouldn't necessarily need to. The insidious technique basically powdered the wood--currently covered in the clinging, burning ash that Takeshi had breathed against it--and aimed to have the opponent breathe it in and work its way into the bronchial tubes, where it would start growing and shredding the soft tissues within.

Kaito ripped one of the explosive-tagged kunai out of the wall where he stood, holding it ready as he kept his senses trained on Takeshi's movements and ready to react at the slightest provocation.

"He's coming, Shishi, and he's not playing nice," he hissed at Akemi, his golden eyes moving to take in his surroundings as he waited for the captain's next move.

Akemi watched with narrowed eyes as Kaito released a wooden structure in front of them and directed her that Takeshi was on the move. “I wasn’t expecting him to play nice, which means we shouldn’t either Toru.” She smirked at him, her brain already thinking her next few moves ahead as she moved towards the now exploding wall. ‘Step 1: distract and divert. Step 2: control. Step 3: should step 2 fail, counter and retreat.’ As she came around the corner and made the hand seals to release Scattering Flames 30 meters at 40 speed and 20 strength. She watched in fascination as the 15 fireballs lit up the entryway and parts of the hallway, igniting the wood splinters shooting towards Takeshi. His fuuton already activated in the other direction to funnel the ash through the fort. She had a moment to be thankful for Kaito’s quick thing before continuing with her plan. The fire would ignite whatever part of the fort it came into contact with, quickly making this area inoperable. This was her diversion, remembering how quickly Takeshi doused her flames last time.

Shortly after the fire began to spread through the entrance, she quickly released another set of hand seals to release her Shadow Imitation 40 meters at 15 speed and 45 strength. She remembered their last fight and how easy it was for Takeshi to dismiss her attacks. She was relying on her katon jutsu and the ignited splinters to distract Takeshi long enough for her shadow jutsu to take effect. This was her best opportunity to use her eiketsu as the flames danced along the hallway creating dozens of shadows for her to play off. She hoped she was strong enough to hold him this time, apart from Kaito’s bramble patch and burning it, this was her main goal. To restrict him and run the clock out.

Tengu observed his comrades’ countermeasures. He was impressed that Tora was able to manifest such a powerful defense so quickly, the Senju prodigy’s chakra control truly was remarkable, surpassing his own. Truthfully, he didn’t have any intention of storming through the front gate, but it seemed worthwhile to test how they would respond to a direct attack. He noted that Kaito had formed a clone, and it was likely the one in the center of the fort was the real one and possessed the original flag. Still, even his Byakguan couldn’t easily determine which was the original.

The counterattack burst forth, an array of tiny splinters, at remarkable speed and formidable strength followed closely by a salvo of fireballs. The wind tunnel slowed their advance, the mokuton disrupting the wind enough to allow the fireballs through, growing larger as they interacted with the Fuuton chakra. Takeshi shifted his stance, countering with a rotation technique would be the most expected. He had to assume they accounted for that. Instead, he would respond in an unconventional way, using a technique neither of them had seen before. He simply raised his left hand and the splinters and fireballs alike each stopped in place, a mere meter in front of him before falling harmlessly to the ground. However, he was surprised as some splinter, partially slowed by his Fuuton already continued forward albeit practically at a crawl to his honed reflexes. Leaping upward, he wouldn’t take the chance of a follow up attack manifesting from the Mokuton.

Chakra surged through his body as he drew his bow, focusing on the Kaito in the center of the fort as he noticed the other one begin to fall back. However, as he notched an arrow his body froze. 'She caught me!?' he realized in surprise, his gaze diverting to the young Nara woman below. Her shadow had been so slow he hadn’t even noticed it at first, too occupied by the rapid, immediate threats. And as he leaped his shadow had elongated by the bright lights behind him, connecting at a point still within the entryway. What was more impressive was the fact that her shadow was actually strong enough to bind him. Only a few days prior when he had recruited Shishi, he had been able to break free of her shadow binding with ease, leading to him believing her shadow paralysis and imitation techniques would be ineffective against him. ‘Damn, this is bad’ he realized, mind racing as he assessed the situation. Fortunately, he could still channel chakra, even if he was bound physically. His Fuuton technique completed, allowing him to remain hovering in the air 10 meters above them. But he was vulnerable to a counterattack, with few options besides his chakra armor to defend himself. Still, he was curious to see how they would handle the situation, and his heart raced in excitement. It had been years since he had felt even remotely challenged by his peers, only Bannin ever serving to humble him. And already these two were proving remarkably talented. He had assumed he would be able to handle his entire squad with ease, but only half of their number was already causing him some problems.

Kaito’s golden eyes flicked to Akemi as her shadow snaked across the floor, its inky tendrils latching onto Takeshi’s silhouette mid-leap--and actually connected!. The Captain-Commander froze, suspended in the air by her [Shadow Imitation], his chakra flaring as he struggled against the bind. He'd half-expected his strategy to fail against the brilliance and strength of the man who led the entirety of the ANBU, but he supposed that no one was invincible--which is why Kaito had devoted his childhood to learning strategy in every way he could.

And his education was telling him now that the Guardian he'd created as an insurance policy was no longer viable, if he wanted to end this quickly.

"Kai," he uttered simply, his hands dropping the kunai before flicking through a single hand seal. The wooden guardian clone in the pagoda--and the flag on the real Kaito's hip--dissolved into a shower of splinters, its chakra rushing back to him in a warm, revitalizing wave. The flag it had been carrying tumbled to the floor, landing squarely in the center of the courtyard—and directly atop the buried bramble trap.

Kaito’s lips twitched in a faint smirk. Perfect.

"Whatever you do, don't drop that jutsu!" Kaito called out to Shishi as he dashed forward, just enough to clear some distance and make sure he wouldn't crush his partner, and clasped his hands together as if in prayer as he channeled an intense, dark-green chakra that seemed to flare around him for a moment. The air itself seemed to shudder as Kaito’s chakra surged, the ground beneath him cracking and groaning under the strain of what was to come. His hands moved in a fluid, almost ritualistic motion, the black Sage markings on his face pulsing with golden light as he channeled [Senpu Mokuton • Aspect of the Bodhisattva].

The first sign of the golem’s emergence was a low, resonant hum, like the distant tolling of a temple bell. Then, the floor erupted.

Massive cords of wood burst forth, twisting and coiling like the sinews of some primordial giant. They wove together in a symphony of growth, each strand hardening into muscle-like fibers that rippled with latent power. The golem’s torso took shape first, its broad chest and shoulders forming from interlocking layers of wood that gleamed like polished lacquer. Its arms followed, each one a masterpiece of Mokuton craftsmanship—thick, corded biceps tapering into forearms etched with intricate patterns resembling Buddhist prayer beads. As the golem grew, the walls and ceiling broke apart under its relentless, advance, causing the massive golem to seem to erupt out of the fort itself.

The golem’s face was the last to emerge, and it was a sight to behold. Carved with serene precision, its features reflected the impassive peace of a Bodhisattva—a deity who had forsaken enlightenment to aid humanity. Its eyes were closed, as if in meditation, and its lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile, radiating an almost otherworldly calm. Yet, despite its tranquil expression, the sheer scale of its presence was overwhelming.

Kaito’s body was embedded in the golem’s forehead, his golden eyes glowing like twin suns as he directed its movements. The golem’s head alone was the size of a small house, and its full height of 30 meters made it a colossus in the confined space of the training facility. Its arms stretched 60 meters fingertip to fingertip, each hand large enough to rip the roof from a house with a single grip. This was Kaito's ultimate creation so far--a golem large enough to change the way a battle was fought, turning the tide of a conflict when he found himself overmatched or outnumbered--and he'd yet to actually show it off to anyone, as it was a relatively recent one.

The giant golem moved with surprising grace, at 45 [Speed], as both of its hands reached out to where the captain was floating in mid-air, the wooden hands creaking and groaning as they cut through the air with the force of a tidal wave. The sheer weight of its movements sent mild tremors through the room as both hands moved to clasp around the man and hold him in place at 45 [Strength], hopefully long enough that they would win the exercise. Kaito could feel his chakra reserves suffering after the rapid-fire Jutsu he'd engaged in, but he still had enough to maintain this statue until it ran its natural lifespan--which should be more than long enough.

Akemi watched as Takeshi slowed the momentum of her fireballs and Katio’s splinters enough that he could jump out of the way. She was curious as to how he did that given the fact that she didn’t feel any additional chakra on the battlefield and his fuuton was increasing the size of her fire and trying to blow the splinters the opposite direction. ‘I’ll have to ask him about that later.’ However, Takeshi launching himself into the air elongated his shadow along the light of her katon, making it easier to ensnare him in her Shadow Imitation. As the reality of his predicament hit Takeshi, Akemi settled into the feeling of her shadow attaching to his own as it connected them, embracing the cold security of the darkness. She let out a loud whoop at her success where she had failed last time. “Fuck yeah!” She couldn’t believe it worked! He so easily dismissed her during their last encounter, and this time she was able to somewhat keep up.

She heard Kaito yelling behind her and took note of him channelling chakra into something big. Akemi made the hand seals for her Shadow Tendril jutsu, performing it twice to create two arms at 20 speed and 40 strength grabbing 5 kunai each and bringing them to her. Where she then made the seals for her Heated blade and ignited 2 of the kunai with 30 strength. With her tendrils gripping the kunai, she directed them to be thrown in Takeshi’s direction; at 20 speed and 40 strength, aiming straight for him. As her kunai released Akemi crossed her hands behind her back, holding hand to wrist in an infinity sign, making Takeshi take the same stance within his wooden cage. Her tendrils withdrew back to her in an anticipatory stance as Kaito's massive mokuton golem finished taking form. She saw the massive hands reach out to grasp at Takeshi and waited to see what happened next and how she should react to it.
Jutsu UsedShow
~Eiketsu • Shadow Tendril
D-rank Ninjutsu
After completing a string of hand seals the user will infuse a shadow within their Control range with chakra, causing a tendril to emerge from it at a Speed and Strength up to the user's Control. This tendril can reach up to 5 meters in length and can be manipulated by the user to grab at anything within its range, throw objects, or even impale targets at a 40 strength and 20 speed up to the user's Control. The Shadow Tendril will remain apparent for up to 4 posts before additional chakra is required.

*Katon • Heated Blade
D-Rank Ninjutsu
By channeling katon chakra into a metal weapon or blade, the user will cause it to grow hotter and cover the blade in flames. The imbued weapon will be able to carve through defenses of 30 or less strength with ease.

Tengu smirked as Tora’s clone dispersed and the young prodigy began building up a massive amount of chakra. ‘That’s more like it’, the goal was clear now, the flag exposed now that his opponents rallied to secure their win. He had hoped that his state of apparent vulnerability might encourage his operatives to use more chakra and shift their focus to offense. Even as his flight jutsu completed he simply hovered in place, observing Shishi’s counter-attack. It was well timed, the follow launching just as the Mokuton golem neared its completion, breaking through the roof of the fort. The 30 meter tall ceilings of the 80 meter long by 40 meter wide training arena, barely contained the impressive creation. This would leave little room for maneuverability, but the sheer size could just as easily be a liability that could be exploited.

As the kunai were launched, Tengu would suddenly move backward at 35 Speed, propelled by his aura of wind, while channelling chakra once more. As he moved out of the trajectory of the weapons another gust of wind would propel him further, pushing him backward at 40 Speed, while also redirecting the salvo of 10 projectiles into the incoming Mokuton hand at 40 Speed and Strength. He hoped this would at least slow the construct somewhat. During his chanelling he had dropped his bow and the one arrow he had held, forced to mimic Shishi’s hand seals, and now he felt the pull of his arms being lowered. His evasive movements wouldn’t be able to hold out for long, the Mokuton technique was faster, if only slightly. Thinking quickly, Tengu adapted to the situation, even physically limited he was a competent fighter. Manipulating the Fuuton aura that controlled his flight he rotated himself upside down, causing his remaining arrows to fall from his quiver but also jarring his sword free from its sheath. The timing was impeccable, the sword slipping free the moment his left hand passed over the blade as it moved behind his back. It was time to reveal his second legendary weapon, the one he had claimed as a Genin in a death match against a renowned member of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist.

Anger fragmented into thousands of tiny shards at the moment the Mokuton hand was sure to be surrounding him. In a whirlwind of steel, the blades began to spin around him, shredding through the Mokuton constructs hand at 50 Speed and Strength. Panting heavily, Tengu righted himself, continuing to strafe backward but now angling away from the Mokuton Golem, toward the side of its body that would surely now be missing a hand. ‘Just a little more’ he urged. Over half the allotted time had passed already, they each just needed one final push now. He still had plenty of chakra, well over half his reserves but his legendary items were taxing, and he knew he couldn’t rely on them indefinitely. His Byakugan was also nearing its limits, though it would persist until the end of the challenge at least.
Jutsu UsedShow

Fuuton • Flight (Still active)
A-ranked Fuuton Jutsu
After forming the necessary handseals Takeshi will flow Fuuton natured chakra around his body in a thin veil. Unlike most Fuuton jutsu this veil contains no cutting properties, but it does create a buffer that blows aside any airborne particulates. In addition, it allows Takeshi to soar through the air, controlling his direction at will or conversely as he typically opts to do he can rely more on the Fuuton focused around his feet, running, jumping or even rolling across the sky as if he were on solid ground, remaining in full control of his movements. This jutsu can last for a maximum of 7 posts, allowing the user to move at a speed equal to his control to a maximum of his Speed stat.

Ignorance (40)
“Ignorance is Bliss”
A ring worn by the user, Ignorance is considered to the greatest of the Evils. Once per post, by focusing chakra into Ignorance, the user can simply hold their hand up. Any non-living (i.e. excluding humans, spirits, and pets) entity within direct alignment of their hand, up to 10 m away from it, will lose momentum. The amount of speed lost is equal to the 'Ignorance' weapon stat.

Fuuton • Evasive Maneuvers
D-ranked Fuuton jutsu
By channeling chakra to any point of their body, the user is able to summon a sudden gust of wind that will propel them with [40] Speed in the opposite direction. Conversely, this can be used to interrupt opponents and objects, propelling them away from the user simultaneously with [40] Strength. These bursts of wind can cover up to a 5-meter-wide area and propel both the user and the target outward for up to 10 meters.

Anger (50 Speed and Strength)
“Harness It”
Anger is a rather simple-looking sword approximately 3 feet in length, with a single-bladed edge, and a hilt that appears to vary in size to fit the user’s hand perfectly. Unlike the other Great Evils, Anger in this form cannot be controlled, though has a strength equal to the weapon stat. However, by running their free hand along the blade, the blade will split into 1,000 tiny blades that fill a 2x2x2m area. The blades can be controlled like a swarm, and the user is granted an 'Anger' weapon stat which functions as the “swarm's” synch stat.

The youngest member of the group clenched his teeth and concentrated as the fireballs got redirected towards the outstretched palm of his golem, forcing him to move the hand in an unnatural, swerving motion that slowed it down just a hair to avoid being struck by the scattered fireballs from his teammate's technique--though 5 of the kunai did bury themselves in the wood even as Kaito dodged the most damaging of the techniques. He was so focused that he almost didn't register the unfamiliar surge of chakra, though he was able to stop just short of collapsing his hand around the Hyuuga.

Kaito’s golden eyes narrowed as Takeshi’s blade shredded through the golem’s outstretched hand, the wood splintering under the whirlwind of steel. The moment his sensory field registered the Captain-Commander’s chakra surging into the sword, Kaito had yanked the golem’s arm back, halting its grasp just shy of collapse. The hand hung mangled, deep gouges tearing through its lacquered surface like claw marks from a titanic beast, but it remained intact--a battered shield instead of a weapon.

He could already see the wounds beginning to close in the laquered wood, the Growth of the wood repairing the structural damage if only a little as he drew it back and regarded the Captain-Commander. He'd been to cocky, and it had almost cost his construct the utility of a limb--and it would cost him the match if he wasn't careful. Kaito could feel that he was running low on Chakra, lower than the captain at any rate, and he withdrew the limb for a moment as his opponent began to circle around the injured side of the golem.

"Akemi, his kunai pouch! Right hip, flap is closed--get him in the quad, miss the femoral," he ordered--after all, he'd been taking tactical lead--before he lashed out with the damaged arm once more at 50 [Speed] and 40 [Strength], aiming to simply pin the captain against the far wall or, failing that, make him back away from the fort. One of the advantages his Golem provided was that in a semi-enclosed space like this, there was nowhere in the facility that he could not reach, and the speed afforded to him by the golem's mutable nature meant that when he was trying to outspeed someone there wasn't much that they could do.

The sword that the captain had, he could feel, took up quite a bit of chakra to use, so even if the golem suffered this time, Kaito could still follow it up with a secondary strike from the hand that wasn't injured.

Takeshi flying backwards spurred Akemi into motion, taking off at 28 speed to keep her jutsu connected to him; her tendrils following behind. She was surprised to see that Kaito had abandoned their plan and left the fort, discarding the coveted flag in the bramble patch. Coming upon the massive wooden titan, she ran up the side of its body and stopping at its shoulder. “I could have sworn the plan was for you to protect the flag and for me to protect you.” Shooting him a long side eye as she performed her hand seals for another fireball. Takeshi’s defenses were impressive and made sense considering he wasn’t just their captain but also the commander of ANBU. Her plan was to stick with distracting him offensively while she maneuvered in the shadows.

She released her fireball at 40 strength and 20 speed directly at the center of Takeshi’s wind and blade storm he was currently encased in. She had heard Kaito’s instruction and had a moment of hesitation, it seemed like a cheap shot to take during training, but she trusted Takeshi’s ability to handle himself overall. As the last dregs of fire spewed from her lips, her Shadow Imitation still in effect; she brought her left hand to her hip watching as Takeshi mimicked the movement with his right and mimed pulling a kunai out of a hip holster. She then acted out a clenched fist around the handle of a kunai and would drive it into the outer left side of her thigh at her full 30 strength. Essentially giving herself a charley-horse while the tip of the kunai embedded in Takeshi’s thigh.

*Katon • Fireball
D-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the correct hand seals the user draws in a deep breath before exhaling out a 1 foot diameter fireball at the opponent. It travels up to 10 meters away at 20 speed and 40 strength.

Still active:

~Eiketsu • Shadow Imitation
C-rank Ninjutsu
After completing a string of hand seals the user will infuse their shadow with chakra and stretch it across any surface up to 15 meters at a Speed and Strength up to the user's Control, aiming to connect it to the opponent's shadow. If contact is made, the user and the opponent will be linked together in movement so that everything the user does is mimicked by the opponent. A Strength equal to or greater than the user's Control is needed to break free of this technique. The effects of Shadow Imitation will remain apparent for up to 5 posts.

~Eiketsu • Shadow Tendril
D-rank Ninjutsu
After completing a string of hand seals the user will infuse a shadow within their Control range with chakra, causing a tendril to emerge from it at a Speed and Strength up to the user's Control. This tendril can reach up to 5 meters in length and can be manipulated by the user to grab at anything within its range, throw objects, or even impale targets at a Speed and Strength up to the user's Control. The Shadow Tendril will remain apparent for up to 4 posts before additional chakra is required.

Tengu’s mind raced, assessing the various angles of the battlefield, and estimating his own rapidly depleting chakra reserves against his opponents. He had hoped to destroy the Mokuton golem quickly, knowing it would only grow stronger the longer it persisted. He was accustomed to training alongside powerful Senju members, Tora’s predecessor, Senju Noeru, codename Kitsune, was even more powerful. A shinobi of near S-rank caliber, yet at least in terms of his skill with Mokuton, Tora could clearly contend at an S-ranked level. The obvious solution would be to engage in close quarters, strike the young man directly and prevent his manipulation of chakra. If he had free use of his limbs and his Jyuuken techniques that would be easy enough to accomplish, though in his current state he was forced to act defensively.

Still, the objective didn’t require him to defeat his opponents, nor did theirs require them to act so aggressively. He could at least draw their focus on him, use his own apparent vulnerability to fuel their aggressive approach to a defensive objective. Flanking to his left (the golems right) and to the opposite side of the sand pit, Takeshi had ensured both golem’s hands and both opponents attention was focused squarely on himself. Running forward as Akemi did Takeshi closed the distance to a mere 20 meters ahead of his opponents. And as Akemi launched her fireball he did something unthinkable, directing his anger swarm towards her, Kaito and the mangled hand while leaving himself open to the uninjured left hand of the golem.

He would continue to strafe to the left, evading the fireballs with ease moving 15 speed faster than them while simultaneously using the large fireball as a deterrent and shield against the mokuton hand that was sure to be closing in on him. Of course, he could do little to stop the control of his hand as he was forced to reach into his pouch, grasping one of the kunai that he kept on the right side. ‘He’s attentive. Not bad’ he realized, he hadn’t expected Kaito to be so familiar with his gear, knowing exactly how he arranged his pouch and what weapons he kept there. However, as Akemi forced him to stab his leg, moving at her speed and strength, the tip of the kunai would be stopped by his near invisible layer of chakra armor that he had coated himself in at the beginning of the match. He hoped it would be enough to protect him for a little longer, for as the anger swarm descended upon his opponents, attempting to shred the remainder of the injured hand, he would suddenly lose command of the swarm as he channelled another technique while the handle of the sword cluttered to the ground.

It was a risky gambit, but it might just pay off. While his opponents focus was split between defending themselves and attacking him, he hoped to catch them off guard as a tunnel of wind manifested around the fallen flag some 15 meters behind them. At 50 speed and 10 strength the winds would form a compete tunnel, moving from the location of the flag to the sand pit roughly 40 meters away from it. With any luck the injured hand would be rendered useless, and the intact one would have been too focused on grasping him to be able to respond in time. Regardless he had managed to take advantage of the weakness of the destroyed fort that Kaito had exposed himself in his reckless counter-attack.
Jutsu UsedShow
[Ninpou • Chakra Armor] (50 Strength, still active)
C-Ranked Ninjutsu
The user channels chakra, flowing it in a thin layer across their body, including their hands and head. This amor has a strength of [Control] and forms at [Control] speed. This aura of chakra can also be formed on others, though only one person per cast, so long as they are within 25 meters of the user. This layer of chakra does not impede movement, normal bodily functions, or the ability to perform hand seals in any way.

Fuuton • Flight (still active)
A-ranked Fuuton Jutsu

Fuuton • Wind Tunnel (range increased to 40 meters, 50 Speed, 10 Strength)
D-Ranked Fuuton Jutsu
After forming a brief series of hand seals Takeshi will build up chakra manifesting a wind tunnel from within 10 meters of him. The stream of air will follow a funnel pattern that can be manifested in a variety of shapes but not manipulated after creation to serve a variety of purposes. The length of the tunnel is up to 10 meters long and 2 meters wide. This jutsu moves at a Speed and Strength equal to [Control] but does not contain the cutting passive of Fuuton. The wind tunnel will last for 2 posts after creation.

Kaito’s golden eyes flared as his sensory field prickled with the sudden surge of chakra. Fuuton. The air around the flag twisted violently, a tunnel of wind forming at 50 [Speed] and snaking toward the sand pit. His jaw tightened as the Senju realized what the man was attempting, his eyes rolling in his head as he calculated angles, speed, and force on the fly. He might have overcomitted with his counterattack, but he knew that the captain couldn't keep this kind of jutsu usage up for much longer than Akemi and him--besides which, he didn't need to keep it up much longer.

The time limit was almost up.

The golem’s mangled hand twitched backwards away from the splinters of anger, retreating away from it at 45 [Speed] and managing to get away with only shallow scratches to its slowly-healing surface. The golem's arm snapped back toward the fort without slowing down and intersected with the path of the chakra he sensed, allowing the flag to simply embed itself in the golem's palm before he closed its fingers around the flag, guarding it from Takeshi's sight. The wind tunnel collided with the wooden barrier, the force of the impact sending tremors through the golem’s arm but not forcing it to move thanks to the construct's slowly-increasing strength.

At the same time, his other hand shot forward at 45 [Speed], just as it had been the entire time, and moved to slam the ANBU captain into the wall with a twisting, almost serpent-like motion that, if successful, would pin the captain in such a way that his arms and legs would be pinned beneath the laquered wood and the captain himself would be rendered immobile even if Akemi should choose to disengage her shadow bindings.

"The plan is still in effect. Without your bindings, Captain Takeshi would have ended this long ago," Kaito admitted with a slight strain in his voice, sweat started to bead his brow as he began to strain his chakra reserves to their limit in order to succeed in this exercise.

Akemi stayed within range of Takeshi, as she avoided his swarm of blades, making sure to hold her eiketsu as that was the top priority. Running along the long lines of the golem made it easier to combat the distance at which Takeshi flew overhead. It also helped to avoid the sharp flying objects currently causing mayhem in her immediate vicinity.

As she ran ahead along the golems arm, leaving the storm behind her, she was finally face to face with Takeshi as Kaito had him pinned in place. There was a solid 10 meters between them as she watched out of the corner of her eye while Kaito grasped the flag, preventing Takeshi’s wind tunnel from moving it any further. As she faced her captain, she rolled her eyes as he said the plan was still in effect. It didn’t seem like a good plan to her to extend beyond your abilities, the sheer strain of their training evident not only in the young boy's voice, but also on his face. While it’s true training was meant to push you to achieve more and get stronger, personal limits were in place for a reason. Dying was a part of the job, unfortunately, but that was on the job.

It was true that strategically speaking he was a prodigy, and his intelligence was almost infallible, along with his surprising control. But there was a lot of work to do still regarding his overall strength and stamina. She was grateful however, to be paired with him. It not only painted a clearer picture of the team’s dynamics but it also showed her more about the role she could fill in the team. And it did show her the value of her use of distractions. She understood that when people looked at her, they saw a physical threat and didn’t anticipate any sort of meaningful jutsu from her. And when she opened with jutsu, it threw people off and made them think her muscles were purely aesthetic. She enjoyed being underestimated; it reminded her that her training really did pay off in the end.

Tengu's swarm of blades didn’t pursue the mokuton hand for long, having dropped the handle of the sword. The shards clattered to the ground. For such a chakra intensive weapon, it hadn’t inflicted much damage to the impressive construct. Though Mokuton jutsu did not truly repair itself such as Suiton it did grow more powerful over time and remained sturdy even when damaged, similar to Doton. It was a powerful fusion element and Kaito was well on his way to mastering the art, though his chakra reserves were lacking when fighting at such a high level. The Hyuuga could see the strain on the younger teenager’s face. If the bout were to last just a few minutes longer he was sure Kaito would reach his limit. It was good pacing on his part for the time constraints but would be problematic during high stakes missions when circumstances were less controlled.

As the flag was intercepted, Tengu sighed, ‘Looks like they win this one’ he conceded. With barely a minute left, he knew he didn’t have the chakra reserves to both evade the fist closing around him as well as overcome the one clenched around the flag while still fending off further attacks. Though if it were a fight to the death, he was certain he had enough tricks left up his sleeve to overcome the opponents themselves. His gambit hadn’t quite paid off, attempting to lull them into a false sense of security by allowing himself to be caught by shadow possession. Kaito had taken the bait and risked overextending with highly chakra consuming counter attacks, exactly as predicted. However, the Commander had overestimated his ability to deal with Kaito’s most powerful jutsu.

The fist clenched around him and his wind aura dispersed. The young commander exhaled sharply as the 50 Strength golem slammed him against the reinforced walls. His chakra armor flickered then dispersed and the bulges around his eyes subsided as he deactivated his Byakugan. Panting, his hair fell across his face, his ponytail jostled loose. “Well done” he congratulated as he looked to the large clock on the far wall. 38 seconds. He could use a substitution, make one last attempt, perhaps even knock out Kaito directly and force him to drop his jutsu before attempting to fend off Akemi and secure the win. But no, he didn’t have anything to prove. They had succeeded in their task and shown good teamwork and an ability to adapt quickly and commit to their improvised strategies, supporting one another even if their methods differed. That was all he needed to see in this exercise. He would wait out the time, knowing that Kaito wouldn’t be foolish enough to release him until the timer officially ran out. “That’s your win then. 5 minute water break then we run it again with opposite objectives” he said with a smirk. He still had about 30% of his chakra reserves left, less than Akemi surely but even with a rest Kaito would struggle for the rest of the session. He would continue to push them hard, increasing their rest times but drilling them with similar exercises for the next hour.

Only by the end when they were each drenched with sweat and thoroughly bruised and exhausted did he finally call an end to the training session. “Alright, that’s it for the morning then” he said, wiping his face. There would be another set of exercises later that evening but they would have the day to recover. “Tora, you’re young but your strategies and your improvisation are impressive. I’m promoting you to Fukutaichi, my second in command. Whenever we split off into smaller squads, you’ll be the acting leader for your group, adjusting battle plans as necessary” he said, clasping the younger teenager on the shoulder, before giving Akemi a sweaty slap on the back with his other hand. “And Shishi, I’ll be recommending you for Jounin in no time. You’ll be stronger than me soon at this rate” he said, giving her muscular back a squeeze. He was all business while on missions or actively training, but he found that after a good workout he tended to relax and let himself be more casual with his squad mates. He hoped to encourage both machine-like efficiency on the battlefield and close-nit comradery off of it. “Dismissed” he said with more authority, officially ending the session and forgoing any last tricks he might pull to ensure they weren’t caught off guard. With that Takeshi would head off to the showers.

Kaito's chest rose and fell in steady, measured breaths as the Mokuton golem stilled beneath him, allowing him to pull himself out of the top of its head and stand upon the wood. His hands trembled slightly at his sides--not from fear, but from exhaustion, the last dregs of his chakra reserves clinging stubbornly to his coils as he willed his muscles to stop trembling from the strain. He hadn't expected to pull off a win, but he'd been told to achieve a mission objective using any means at his disposal--and he had rightly judged that the shadow binding was enough of a restriction that his golem would be effective.

However, he knew that he'd overextended--and worse, if this was a real scenario, he'd be almost helpless should more enemies arrive. He estimated that he could have held out an additional minute and a half before exhaustion took him, which was an unacceptable outcome. He needed to work on expanding his chakra pool.

The praise, when it came, was as blunt as a kunai to the ribs.

Fukutaicho. Second-in-command.

For a single, unguarded moment, Kaito's carefully schooled expression fractured. His brows lifted a fraction, lips parting just enough to betray the shock coiled tight in his gut. He recovered quickly, of course--blinking once, slow and deliberate, before dipping into a shallow bow.

"Understood, Taicho," he said, voice even. But the words tasted strange on his tongue, like a language he hadn't quite mastered. His gaze flicked to Akemi as Takeshi praised her, then away just as fast. Jounin. She deserved it. She'd fought well.

Kaito flexed his fingers, feeling the ache in his joints, the protest of overused muscles. One minute, thirty-eight seconds. That was all that had separated victory from collapse. Now that the others would be depending on him for tactical command, he needed to be better than that.

As Takeshi strode off toward the showers, Kaito remained rooted in place for a heartbeat longer, staring at the Captain's back as he walked away, the weight of his new responsibility almost enough to make him bow beneath its weight. Then, with a quiet exhale, he turned and walked over to one of the benches that lined the wall--the one next to the water cooler.

Akemi breathed out a sigh of relief knowing that they had won. She was unsure for a while if they would be successful with Tengu’s odd little swarm of knives flying around, and with Kaito overextending himself. After their day of training, it gave her a lot to think on, areas for her to improve on as well as areas for the team to be more conscious of. She felt that this was a good team, but in order to do well and benefit Konoha, they would need to be a great team.

She clapped Kaito on the shoulder at his promotion, considering his tactical skill and chakra control it made sense. “Well done Tora.” She shot him a bright smile in congratulations, which quickly turned to surprise as her captain announced he would be recommending her to Jounin after only 6 months of her being a Special Jounin. With her eyes wide and mouth agape slightly, she bowed her head towards Tengu in appreciation. “Thank you captain, I’ll be sure to give you a run for your money.” Though there was a little playfulness to her tone, her expression conveyed more gratitude than anything else.

Akemi nodded towards Kaito and Takeshi as they were dismissed, turning around to look at the now decimated arena that lay before them. It was hard to imagine this on a grander scale with lives involved, something she needed to work on to make sure she didn’t make costly mistakes in the field. She saw the captain leaving out of the corner of her eye and Kaito walk over to the benches and the water cooler. She didn’t know what she had been expecting for today, but it felt like something had been accomplished and gained.
