Another Cobble in the Road
Another Cobble in the Road
It had been a journey. The airship that had crossed half the continent through the window of which Jirou had watched the vast deserts of Wind Country float by had taken him far. Still, its landing only marked the halfway point. It had set him down in one of Pebble Country’s larger settlements, from which Jirou had found a carriage. Around nightfall, it deposited him in a small town in the hilly interior of the country. The inn was a humble establishment, but one that provided Jirou with a hearty meal of rice, river fish, and three different kinds of pickled vegetable.
From here he was on foot. The countryside would have been beautiful, had Jirou been in a mood to appreciate it. All he could think of was his desire to reach the Ishidatami school, high in the countryside. By afternoon, he had reached the town at the base of the mountain the school sat upon. Another inn, another hearty meal. The innkeeper knew on sight that he was here to train.
“They like to put their students through the wringer,” the chubby, bald innkeeper joked. “Around here, we call their mountain ‘The Zeroth Trial’.”
“The Zeroth Trial?” Jirou asked, cocking a deep red eyebrow.
“It’s got to be a thousand steps up the mountain. When I was a boy they tried to get us to deliver their supplies up there. My father told them to pound sand and come get their damn supplies themselves. He wasn’t climbing that damn mountain every week. It’s the zeroth trial because the students who aren’t in good enough shape to get up it aren’t cut out for the school anyway.”
Jirou smiled and flexed.
“I don’t think I have anything to worry about,” he laughed, his voice booming through the quiet inn.
Jirou hardly slept that night, his mind too captivated by the prospect of finally mastering Toryu.
“Be seeing you soon!” the innkeeper called after him as he went through the door.
“What?” Jirou turned around and glared at the man. Did he really have so little confidence in him?
“Either you’ll come back down tonight, or they’ll send you down for a couple hundred pounds of food next week,” the old man laughed. Jirou joined in.
“Better double that,” Jirou bellowed, a grin on his face. “Or I’ll eat through it in a day!”
They shared a laugh, and Jirou started up the mountain.
The sun was just past its zenith when Jirou finally made it past the last step, drenched in sweat and breathing heavily.
“Who goes there?” a young man in an orange uniform demanded.
“My name… is Jirou Kisama,” Jirou panted. “I’m an Akibushi… of the Heart Empire… and I come recommended.” Jirou held out a scroll of worn paper to the guard, who took it and read it over.
“Very well,” he said. “Proceed.”
He produced a great key and opened the gate. Another guard led Jirou through a courtyard full of students sparring with each other, and into a central hall. He had caught his breath by then.
“I am Jirou Kisama!” he bellowed into the hall, targeting his announcement at the old man who sent in the center. “Akibushi of the Heart Empire! Apprentice to the great Roku Shuryo! Student of Iaido,” he leveled his gaze directly at the master. “And soon to be master of Toryu.”

Another Cobble in the Road
Standing among all the students, Ryuoichi was training his skill with his katana. In front of a mechanical robot, Ryu was ducking slices and retaliating with quick swipes of his blade. Ryu was a specialist in up close combat, nd he liked to spend his time honing his skills. He had some obvious weaknesses, like range, but Ryu didn't worry himself about that. Pebble country was filled with ninjutsu and most of the time , the biggest danger was another person. Ryuu had killed before, he was a tough guy.
When Jirou came brging into the classroom, Ryu was immediately disturbed. The boy was annoying and loud. Two traits that ryuoichi despised. He backed up from his combat dummy and turned to see who was yelling. Ryuoichi had never seen a Kisama before and he was quite surprised by the monstrous staature of Jirou. He felt a fire burn up in his chest just by looking at the dark kinned teenager. "Disgusting.." He spat out at Jirou and walked over to confront that flagrant swordsman.

Jirou’s hand immediately went to his sword as one of the students spat at him.
“What's your problem?” he shouted, eyes narrowing at Ryu. “I’ll kick your-”
“Starting fights so soon?” the voice of the dojo’s master boomed through the hall. “Very well, boy. You would not be the first fiery-tempered practitioner of Toryu. I would have you prove your worth if you wish to train here.”
“Wait, sir,” Jirou called out. “I also come recommended.”
His right hand stayed on his sword, and he held up the scroll with the other hand. With a nod of his head, the master bade one of his attendants to run forward and retrieve the letter. Another student came up and put a strong hand on Ryu’s shoulder, reminding him to hold back until their sensei gave the word. The attendant ran back and presented the scroll with a bow. The sensei read it over, then cast it aside.
“I would still have you prove your worth if you wish to train here. Ryu, it looks like you have volunteered to test the newcomer. Everyone else, clear a space!”
The assembled students moved out of the spacious hall’s center and took seats around the edges, ready to watch the match. The two combatants found themselves only a few meters apart, in the middle of a wood-floored hall that was around 10 by 5 meters.
“Begin!” the master called out.
Immediately, Jirou’s hand went to his hilt as he took a few quick steps towards Ryu. With an intense and practiced speed, Jirou’s sword was out. As it arced towards Ryu’s torso at 27 Speed in the most classical of Iaido blows, Jirou suddenly let himself drop and transferred his momentum into a hard low kick aimed at Ryu’s knees, always sure to keep his blind spots in mind.

*[Iaido • Ancestral Focus]
D-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
The hallmark of Iaido is its practitioners abilities to launch an attack even when their swords are sheathed. This Discipline represents the practitioner's capacity to consistently execute a sword draw and slash all in one movement by gripping the edge of the scabbard and pulling the scabbard slightly forward before drawing the sword. This Discipline enables the practitioner to immediately draw their sword and attack at the start of combat.
*[Iaido • Weapon Mastery]
D-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Since Iaido is a style that prioritizes speed over brute strength, wise usage of the blade is paramount to the practitioner's success in the style. This Discipline represents the practitioner's knowledge of their weapon's strengths and weaknesses in combat, allowing them to use the weapon more efficiently both inside and outside of its use in Iaido techniques and avoid unnecessarily presenting their weapon's blind spots to the opponent.
*[Iaido • Last Breath]
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
The most iconic (and most basic) strike of Iaido, the practitioner quickly draws and cuts with their blade in a wide arc in one fluid motion. This simultaneous draw and attack straight from the scabbard makes Iaido well-suited for an initial surprise attack and for taking advantage of openings presented by the opponent.
*[Toryu • Dust Eater]
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
The practitioner moves in and initiates a feint in the form of a thrust. Partway through the thrust, however, the practitioner twists their arm to the side and drops low, rotating and lashing out with a spinning low kick, attempting to sweep the opponent's feet out from under them. Opponents with an Acrobatics technique of equal or higher rank than this technique can resist the tripping effect.

It would seem tha tthe master of the dojo believed Ryu to be a proper test for this newcomer. The swordsman in training, Ryu, wasn't thrilled with the idea of fighting this guy. Loud mouth's always had something to prove, and fighting against tenacity like that was bold to say the least. Ryu bit his tongue, literally, holding back his dismissal of the mmaster's orders.
When all the students had cleared the arena, Ryu drew his sword. He stood about 2.5 meter's from Jirou, and was preparedd to give him the fight of his life. Ryuichi stuck his sword forward and partitioned the space between the two combatants with it's edge.
Jirou made the first move, and he was certainly faster than Ryouichi. He slashed acrossRyoichi's torso, but was easily met with the Pebble swordsman's blade. With his sword stuck so far out, Ryoichi had but a turn of his wrist to deflect the slaash. That wasn't the end of Jirou's strike. Ryuoichi could tell that this combo was practiced, and he could read Jirou's novice movements to the ground. Ryu further turned his blade down by shifting his wrist, and arced a slash across the ground toward where Jirou's leg was quickly shooting out, with 20 speed and 28 strength,

Jirou drew his leg in with 27 Speed, just avoiding the slash while letting his kick's momentum carry him around. When he was clear of the blade, he shot his foot back out Ryo's foot, slamming his own onto it. Continuing his rotation, his left hand shot out to grab Ryo's upper arm, and with a mighty twist of his hips, tried to slam his opponent into the ground.

Prerequisite(s): 8 Strength.
One of Toryu's many grappling techniques, the practitioner steps in close to the opponent, slamming their heel into the opponent's foot to lock the target in place. In the same movement, the practitioner grabs the opponent's arm and flips them over their back, slamming them to the ground unless the opponent has an Acrobatics technique of an equal or higher rank than this technique. The prone position this leaves the opponent in leaves them exposed to an attack of opportunity from the practitioner's weapon after executing this technique.

As Jirou wsa carried around with his kick, Ryu pulled his sword arm tight to his chest. He watched the red headed Kisama aim to pin his foot down and strengthened his sword arm for a thrust. Ryu braced himself for the stomp and leaned forward. There wasn't much space between the point of Ryu'ssword and Jirou's chest. Ryu aimed for Jirou's guts and quickly shot his arm forward with 20 speed. Combined with Jirou moving forward to Ryu at 27 spee, the collision was certain to be breath taking for one of them.
As he pressed his blade forward, Ryu thought about wht a punk this kid was. He came into this dojo looking for a teacher, but held no respect for the style's art. Jirou's form ws easily readable, true novice. If only Ryouchi had the strength and speed of this dark skinned cretin The Pebble native took his free hand and grabbed Jirou by the lapels, pulling him closer to the sword's point.

While Ryo's Toryu technique was better than Jirou's, Jirou had a keener eye for battle. He could see the strike coming. He exhaled slowly and moved fast, letting his muscles relax. As he continued his rotation, he swayed his torso slightly away from the path of Ryo's incoming stab. At the same time, he pushed up with his left hand which was tightly grasped around Ryo's upper arm, forcing his opponent's sword up and away from his body with 27 Strength. All while continuing to fling Ryo to the ground.

*[Iaido • Ancestral Visage]
C-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Using Iaido to its fullest requires a keen eye and quick reactions, enabling its users to target weaknesses and openings that their opponents present almost instantaneously. This Discipline represents the practitioner's ability to attack openings that present themselves, the practitioner now able to reflexively attack an opening in almost the same moment that it is observed. This Discipline reduces the gap of time between a practitioner recognizing a potential opening for attack and launching the attack to exploit said opening to almost nil.
*[Toryu • Skipping Stone]
D-Rank Taijutsu Stance
The signature Stance of Toryu, practitioners relax the muscles in their bodies, gaining additional flexibility in their movements in how they approach the enemy, how they retreat, how they evade attacks, and how they attack the opponent. This Stance allows the practitioner to more easily read opponent's attacks and defend against them by evading in unusual ways, such as ducking, bending around, and quickly sidestepping attacks without needlessly exposing themselves to additional attacks. This fleet-footed Stance lets the practitioner mix up their movements to confuse and misdirect the opponent, allowing them to attack lesser-known openings in the opponent's guard. It also allows the practitioner to rapidly and reflexively change the angle, position and grip of their weapon with minimal movement, allowing them multiple manners in which they can attack the opponent or defend against attacks.
*[Iaido • Last Rites]
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
A defensive technique particularly useful when an opponent is close to the practitioner or is clinching them in a grapple, the practitioner grabs the hilt of their sword with a reverse grip and rams the butt or pommel of the hilt into the opponent's body, pushing the opponent back a number of meters equal to the difference between their Strength scores. Conversely, against opponents with higher Strength than their own, the practitioner can use this technique to push themselves back a number of meters equal to their own Strength score. The speed and simplicity of the attack can push opponents away and give the practitioner the needed space to set up additional attacks.

It seemed to Ryu that he would get the upper hand, but Jirou was much stronger than the PEbble native. That cannibal flipped Ryu right over and onto the ground. As he was pushed into the air, Ryo slashed out with his blade, aiming for Jirou's quarter. Ryu knew he was in trouble in a grappling match with this behemoth, but there wasn't too much he could do. Ryu dug his blade into Jirou's side, hoping to injure him and weaken his grip on the swordsman in training.

Jirou had made a promise to himself that he would sink or swim in this challenge by virtue of his sword skills, without the help of the abilities granted him by his blood. Watching Ryo's sword arc towards his side, he briefly reconsidered. It would be so easy to harden the skin of his torso and let the blade slide harmlessly across it. Instead, he let the blade dig into his ribs as he slammed his opponent to the ground.

The katana carved into Jirou's flesh. The Kisama's tough skin gave the blade tension, but it was sharp enough to slice through his side. Ryu would have grinned, but as he made first blood, Jirou slammed him onto the ground with his full might. Ryu wonered if his flesh wound just made things worse for him as his skull bounced off the hardwood dojo flooring.
Never one to lose his beat, Ryu wrenched his sword in Jirou's flesh turning the blade to the side. As he gaped open Jirou's tender flesh, Ryu grabbed his hair with his other hand and began twisting his body as hard as he could, trying to turn Jirou over in a moment of pain.

Another Cobble in the Road
Gritting his teeth through the pain, Jirou stomped down on Ryu's sword arm as his opponent bounced off the hard, wooden floor, forcing the sword out of his side. One foot on Ryu's forearm, he crouched down, placing a knee on Ryo's chest and angling his sword at Ryo's throat.
"Do you yield?" he barked, his free hand darting to his side to try and staunch the bleeding.

Another Cobble in the Road
Being lammed into the ground was certainly uncomfortable, but Ryo had gotten his payback. With blood dripping onto his exposed chest, Ryu woul have spit on Jirou if he could. A monster like him was a shoo in to beat a normal guy in a spar. Ryu couldn't help but think of all the training he had done. It was worthless.
"Get off me!" Ryu spat and started thrashing around on the ground. He was pretty well spent but the young guy had enough fire in him to push Jirou around. Around, not off of him. Ryu wass locked mostly in place and as much as he thrust his hips to break free of the mount, he was stuck "I yield, punk!" He cried out and stopped thrashing around.

Another Cobble in the Road
Still atop Ryu, Jirou lifted his sword from where it was, pointed at his pinned opponent’s throat. He stood up slowly, first lifting his knee from Ryu’s chest and only moving his foot from his forearm after he was on his feet fully.
Taking a few steps back while keeping Ryu in sight, he righted his sword. His hand left his side as blood bubbled out of the wound there and grasped the deep-red and brass scabbard still tucked into his belt. With a practiced precision more at home in Iaido than Toryu, he angled his scabbard and dragged the dull edge of his blade across it until the point sat before the opening. A smooth push saw the sword returned to its proper peacetime place.
He bowed twice. First to Ryu, then to the master at the head of the room.
“Will that do, sensei?” Jirou asked the older man. A heavy drop of blood landed on the wooden floor with a splat. Two attendants rushed over to help Ryu off to the infirmary. The master beheld Jirou for several moments, weighing his future in his mind.
“Someone get him bandaged up,” the man finally announced. “Your time here starts now. Someone will show you to your quarters as soon as you clean up the mess you are making in my training hall.”
