Showdown in the Sky

School was out, summer was here, and so was Tenshi.
A gray sky cast a spotlight on the genin’s messy, sun-bleached hair, as she strut proudly out of the academy building’s shadow. The sparring field, like most of Kumogakure, had an empty feel to it. The flat plane opened to a clear view of the mountains, ending in a steep cliff– though the drop barely reached two meters.

Truth be told, it was her first time back at the academy since graduating. If it wasn’t for the welcome home celebration a few nights ago she’d never be here. Her found family had spent the dinner talking about all the memories they made without her. Yuuto had lost another tooth. Arisa had a new boyfriend– There’d been an old one? and learned a few new jutsu she wanted to show off. That brought them to the stupidest conversation ever as Arisa bragged she’d graduated ‘top of her class’. Tenshi had never applied herself in school, but it none of that mattered because: “I’m the best of my class.”

And she wasn’t all talk. To prove it, they worked together on a set of dramatic flyers challenging any shinobi to fight in the schoolyard and pasted it around the Academy.

Tenshi turned to her “cheer squad” in the stands. The five or so kids were as lifeless as training dummies. They’d grown up with her and were used to her ‘performances’ by now. She’d promised a show but it was noon and no one had answered the challenge. She paced the sparring grounds, tracing its white outlines to stay warmed up.
“This is taking forever.” One of them whined.
“I’m gonna go,” Arisa huffed, fiddling with her new headband. “Tao wanted to see me before his next mission.”
“He'll wait.”
“Yeah, but I don’t want him to.”
Tapping her foot, Tenshi scowled at them. “Listen, I’ve been training in the cold, eating snow for breakfast, and sleeping with icicles up my nose for months. The least you can do is be patient! Besides, I put up the challenge and look… No one in Kumo dares stand against me! Doesn't that make it true?” She kept moving and ignored their teeth sucking. After all of that training in Cold Country, she refused to come back with nothing to show for it. "Trust me, when someone shows up, I'll make it quick."

Summer was Raijin's absolute favorite season.

That might be because he was just in a spirits-forsaken frozen wasteland full of animals that had no business being predatory chasing him through the woods while his pink-haired sensei laughed maniacally in the trees, but hey.

He'd had a good visit with his parents, gone through the motions of participating in a meal just for the chance to sit with them and listen to them talk about village life and the latest gossip--apparently Kobayashi-San down the street had managed to divorce her wife, get a new girlfriend, and get in a row so big they had to replace the walls of the local tavern. Raijin wasn't really sure what all that was about, but he was glad he didn't have to worry about that gross relationship stuff yet.

Now, he strolled through the streets of Kumogakure, hands behind his head with his fingers interlaced, elbows out as he whistled a slightly-staticky tune--right up until something he caught out of the corner of his eye brought him up short. He literally did a double take when he saw the flyer just outside the academy grounds--challenging any shinobi that wanted to fight the "Great Tenshi" to prove that they were stronger. Raijin walked over and plucked it off the wall, his eyebrows raised in curiosity as he read the details. Apparently his teammate wanted a sparring match to prove that she was the best in her class, and was willing to back up the statement with her fists--a fact that made a mischievous grin spread across his face that was eerily similar to the one his sensei wore at almost all times.

Raijin raised the flyer above his head and began to march towards the schoolyard--not that it took too long to reach his goal. The electrifying genin kicked open the door to the courtyard and waved the flyer above his head with a grin, taking note of his teammate and the gaggle of kids that he'd seen following her around when they were both in the academy.

"Tenshi-chaaaaaaa~n!" the younger genin called out as he waved the flyer he'd picked up, a bounce in his step as he practically skipped over to the group in the stands. "If you wanted to fight the best out of the academy, you coulda just asked the future Raikage!"

His tone was teasing, and a spark shot off his lashes as he winked at her cockily. Raijin wasn't trying to truly antagonize her--he liked Tenshi, she was funny and seemed to treat him like he was an actual person rather than a danger to everyone around him--but he was trying to rile her up just a little. It was more fun if they went all out, and being just a little annoyed was the best fuel for a friendly spar.

The girl crossed her arms, holding Arisa prisoner with her glare. Waiting around made her feel foolish but Tenshi was too stubborn to let time defeat her.
She looked over her shoulder as a door finally swung open. The bored kids perked up, sensing drama. Tenshi’s brow tweaked in surprise as a Raijin skipped out onto the courtyard. She recognized his mischievous smile but didn’t connect it to the flyer in his hand at first. For a second, her mouth fell open. Then her teeth snapped shut. Perfect.

“Ooo,” the gang cried when he made his boast. As a group, their eyes swished to Tenshi.
“Future Raikage, huh? Hm, that’d almost be a challenge but where’s he at though?” she squinted, scanning above the short Arashiyama.
“Ohh.”
Though Tenshi thought it was silly, she’d never dismiss his dream. They carried a chip on their shoulders. If becoming Raikage was how he planned to shift it then more power to him, but that didn’t mean she’d make it easy.

“Wait, is this your teammate?” Arisa wondered out loud. “The one you’re always complaining about?” she finished before Tenshi shushed her.
Such a loudmouth…
Rolling her eyes, Tenshi met him in the center of the sparring ground with hands akimbo. “Brave of you to show up,” said Tenshi. The genin could admit he’d shown her up a couple times in Cold Country, but she’d been out of her element then. Now was her chance to settle the score. “Are you sure about this?” She said with an easy smirk. “This isn’t going to be like sparring with Aki-sensei. I’m going to be giving it my all.”

"Aw, you talk about me with your friends? You're gonna make me blush, ya know," Raijin said with a grin, choosing to ignore Tenshi's friend group's jabs and teases. It was way nicer than some people had been when he was in the academy. At least this time it was intended to be at least a semi-friendly teasing rather than mocking him.

Raijin's grin widened at her words, a shudder seeming to run through his body as he blue-shifted for just a moment before he let out a barking laugh and threw his head back.

"If you weren't giving it your all, I'd feel insulted ya know! You haven't seen everything that I can do yet, Tenshi-chan," the younger genin boasted as he flexed his arm, his physical form showing off a muscle that was more a platonic representation of what he thought his body should look like rather than an actual result of his work. Still, not bad for a 12 year old!

Raijin began bouncing from foot to foot, sparks flying from the contact of his feet on the ground as he began to find his rhythm hummed an upbeat tune, the smile never leaving his face as his glowing golden eyes regarded Tenshi.

"Alrighty, let's rumble!" the young boy said cheerfully before he seemed to rocket towards his teammate, going from a standstill to his maximum [Speed] of 15 in an eyeblink. Fast as lightning, the young Arashiyama lowered his shoulder and aimed to drive it directly into Tenshi's sternum--a little trick that he'd learned from Akihiko-Sensei called [Lightning’s Shadow • Thunderstruck]. If it was successful, the 12 [Strength] strike would knock the wind out of her--he could hit harder, of course, but he wasn't trying to do any kind of permanent damage.

“They got their Arashiyama mixed up. I was talking about Kyou.” Tenshi said it fast enough to almost be convincing.
“Aww, play nice with your boyfriend, ‘Tenshi-chan’!”

She sneered but let it slide. Tenshi refused to let them distract her; she needed to lock in for this spar. He was right. She wasn’t sure what to expect from her teammate. During their training in the Cold Country, she’d been too obsessed with her own progress to notice his. The few times she’d seen him in action he’d been a blur– and even then the kunoichi suspected he held back.
Tenshi flinched– though if asked she’d say she was ‘bracing herself’-- as Raijin charged, tucking his head for a tackle. Caught with stiff ankles, she could only perform a half turn as he came in for the hit. Bam! Her quick maneuver distributed the force at an angle, but the blow was still teeth-jarring. Her heel scraped dirt as she gave ground, but kept her footing.

Not bad. Before his full momentum could drive through her, Tenshi shifted her center, planting her back foot solidly. She pivoted, redirecting his weight with a subtle push, aiming to unbalance him as they broke apart.

The spectators watched her bounce off the boy in amazement. Clearly they had not expected such power from someone his size. Yeah, yeah, he’s faster and packs a punch, but now it’s my turn. Tenshi, informally trained in close-quarters combat, ran on pure instinct. Pushing off her back foot, Tenshi lunged in [10 Speed] to catch Raijin’s head with a cross [8 Strength], following it up with a straight right [8 Strength] while she thought his guard was down.

Raijin's grin never wavered as he felt the impact--he could tell he hadn't hit straight on, but the move he'd just performed had to have dealt some damage--and followed his momentum to roll into an ukemi and pop up when his opponent shifted her weight. He'd spent hours training in this style with his sensei, and the movements seemed to come to him naturally at this point. He barely had to think about his foot placement, the way he moved his body, the way he dispersed the impact on the ground and rolled into a fighting stance with both hands raised.

The Arashiyama bounced on his heels as he stood, allowing him to immediately start moving as he watched his opponent begin her follow-up. The young genin leaned to the left to avoid the left cross at 12 [Speed], his glowing eyes following her fist for a moment before they cut back over to Tenshi. The wide grin on his face never faltered as he ducked to avoid the right cross--leaving him crouching below the other genin with his legs nearly buzzing with the tension he was forcing into the chakra there.

Raijin erupted from his crouched position in a flash of movement, twisting as he raised with his right fist clenched and his elbow bent at his side until the last second, when he sent it careening towards Tenshi's chin at 15 [Speed] and [Strength]. Maybe it was a little harder than he should have been going, but Tenshi got him excited to try out his moves--and [Lightning’s Shadow • Skyward] was a flashy move that would let him follow up with the rest of a combo he'd worked on for weeks.

The practicioner has trained and perfected distributing his weight during a fall through the art of Ukemi. This means he can naturally (like second nature) perform and seamlessly move into a roll, forwards, backwards or sideways from any position. Starting from a low position, the practitioner pushes upwards with his legs and rotates his core to create a high amount of torque while simultaneously moving his fist up towards an opponents chin or chest. This punch delivers a high amount of force capable of knocking people even slightly greater than his own strength off their footing. Those with less strength than him will actually be launched completely off their feet and into the air. For opponents weaker than the practitioner, for every point of strength he has over them they are sent flying 1/2 meter into the air.

Tenshi’s confidence faltered as Raijin weaved her punch. No problem. She had plenty to spare. His movements were nice and fluid. Like he’d seen it all a thousand times. Was this his training with Akihiko-sensei paying off? She hadn’t imagined the gap between them would be this wide, but even with the evidence playing in her face Tenshi refused to accept it. She just needed to think of a way to slow him down.

The answer came as her last swing hit air. Tenshi’s lanky build forced the shorter boy to cut in close to get his hits off. She could use that. She focused on her arms; the skin prickled beneath a film of chakra vibrating at a low-frequency hum. Through the frame of her arms, she saw Raijin’s legs bunch like a coiled spring. She threw up a cross-arm guard in time for it to buckle as his punch broke through like a battering ram.

His fist clipped her chin and Tenshi saw stars. At least it wasn’t a clean hit– though the way she’d stumbled into it made it look like one. Wincing as she was lifted off her feet, Tenshi felt a rewarding jolt of energy jumping from her skin to his fist. She grit her teeth, suffered the pain, and through the effort her jutsu held.
Now as she sailed through the air, the genin would do her best to orient herself to turn her fall into a roll, keeping one eye open for his next attack.

The tingling sensation of the Jikiton jutsu connecting was largely lost on him--after all, he felt like he was tingling at all times--but the fact that his fist didn't connect square wasn't. Still, it was enough to send his sparring partner soaring into the air, setting up the next leg of his combination. Raijin followed through on the punch and leapt up alongside Tenshi before interlacing his fingers, throwing himself into a mid-air somersault, and coming down on the older member of his genin team with both hands in a somewhat flashy rendition of [Lightning’s Shadow • Strikepoint] aimed directly at her now-exposed sternum at 12 [Strength] and [Speed]

If successful, the blow would send her crashing into the ground hard enough to create a secondary impact at the same strength--and that would still be just the start of the string of attacks he had prepared. The style he'd learned from his sensei demanded constant movement, never giving even a moment for his opponent to rest or recover from his blows--hopefully it would be enough to show Tenshi and her friends that she shouldn't underestimate the future Raikage.

Gasps rippled through the crowd as Tenshi arced overhead, a bright blur against the sky. Watching Tenshi finally get checked stirred a storm of shock, glee, worry. To them, Tenshi was a big sister. Whether she was the best of her class or not, she was all but invincible to them. This may not have been the outcome they expected, but if Tenshi could get a word through her gritted teeth, she’d make them certain of one thing: she was a performer.

She lifted her head in time to see Raijin flying towards her. Seriously!? He never stops. And all his movements ran together so smoothly it was hard to find an opening. She guessed that was sort of his defense. She’d just have to force her way through it. The thought sent an electric thrill riding up her spine.
Her hand twitched into a fist. The arm tingled as the bubble of magnetized chakra swelled. Polarity shifted. An unseen force would halt Raijin’s falling momentum mid-swing– if only for a breath. And that breath was all she needed.

“Gotcha!”
Tenshi would steal the moment of confusion, core burning as she twisted to deliver a wild swing at his chin. While she would have preferred striking from a stable base, rather than mid-air, the punch was still thrown with enough force [8 Strength] to knock them apart.

Her revenge sacrificed any hope of a graceful landing. But as she tumbled head over heels to the ground, she decided a little dirt in her hair was worth it if it meant paying him back. She rose to a knee, rubbing her chin. With interest, she thought bitterly. He might’ve knocked a tooth loose.

Raijin's eyes clocked the movement as she twisted to deliver the uppercut punch, a wide grin splitting his face as they connected simultaneously--stopping some of his momentum and allowing her to connect fairly solidly with his chakra-based body. He didn't have the same sensations as most--there was no jarring of bone, no shaking of his brain within the confines of a boney skull--but it was enough to prevent him from connecting fully with the overhead strike and send both of them stumbling into a landing. Raijin hit the ground in a perfect ukemi, rolling backwards from the impact and popping back up into a three point landing with one hand digging into the soft earth, before his face snapped up to look at her with glowing yellow eyes and the same ferocious grin that he'd been sporting for nearly the entire match.

"This is where the fun begins, ya know!" he said with relish before he seemed to simply blur into a streak of blue-white light that Tenshi would, hopefully, find impossible to actually follow at 15 [Speed]. He leapt up and over her head as he went, his arm transitioning into the blue-white ranton chakra that he was made of, and lashed out to wrap around her torso under her arms at 15 [Strength] and [Speed]. If successful, he would pirouette midair to pull his teammate into the air while being shocked at 12 [Control]--he didn't want to kill her, after all, but she'd made the mistake of underestimating him at the beginning of this fight and he wanted to show her just what he was capable of.

He would spin around and release her at the apex of the twirl, sending her tumbling into the stands where her friends watched at 12 [Strength] and [Speed].

Tenshi managed to stand and dust her shoulders right before Raijin took off. He was a blur of perpetual motion. Never letting her attacks (or attempts) break his flow, and smiling through it all. On the other hand, even this early in the match Tenshi’s breath came light and fast.

Any other opponent would take a step back and think to themselves- 'Maybe this is more than I can handle.' But that’s how losers think. Instead, Tenshi anchored herself in the moment, refusing to let Raijin run roughshod over her. Though he moved faster than her eyes could catch, the genin knew better than to trust sight alone. His footsteps left a rhythmic crunch of earth, layered under the flapping of wind-rustled fabric. Eyes swung lagging a beat or two behind him, until his shadow sliding overhead helped pinpoint him.

So he’d switched up tactics and gone airborne. Drawing a hollow kunai, she pivoted on a heel and spotted him. Luckily, that put him at her preferred range. But Tenshi’s eyes bulged as he flung out an arm and she watched it stretch towards her. He can do that? The kid was bursting with surprises.
She could still rely on old tricks. Tenshi allowed him to reach as close as possible before reversing the polarity again. The force was stronger than before but not enough to beat her technique. The lash of Ranton would stall in mid air-- to the shocked gasps of the onlookers.

Tenshi knew she’d be too slow to catch Raijin’s landing, and seeing how quick he recovered she couldn’t give him a second to think of a counter attack. Gritting her teeth, she concentrated; a bit of her will flowing into the steel. Go! The kunai leapt from her hand. It whistled through the air, pulled towards Raijin’s magnetized chin. It wouldn’t draw blood, but the dull, hollow metal would give him a good smack at least. Managing all this, Tenshi would use the brief reprieve to jump back, racing towards the cliff edge of the sparring ground.

Raijin's grin took on a slightly strained quality as his arm was stopped just short of its intended target, finally registering what was actually happening--she'd done something to him while she was blocking his attacks, taking advantage of the fact that he wasn't going all out. He could sense something off about his body, a slight variation in the frequency of his physicality that was the source of the resistance he was feeling. He jerked his arm back, allowing the limb to flow backwards like a whip recalled before solidifying back into his arm.

As he soared through the air he reached down to his belt, slotting both of his arms into shining metal gloves that hung on either side of his waist, where weapons would normally go. And indeed, for him, these were weapons of a powerful nature. As his hands clenched into fists and he channeled his very nature through them, lines on the gauntlets began to glow a iridescent sky-blue that Tenshi had seen several times thus far in their fight.

"Let's get it goin', ya know?" The young man called out as he landed in a perfect Ukemi before launching himself at the target of his attention. The kunai was still midway between the two of them as he began his charge, causing his eyes to widen ever so slightly before his grin intensified. As the onlookers watched the kunai would simply pass through the young man as if he weren't there, exiting out the back of his head and leaving a glowing blue hole through his chin and neck that swiftly closed after the kunai had passed completely through. The kunai was now coated in Ranton chakra, trailing blue light and sparking like a livewire, as it traveled away from the both of them and Raijin closed the distance.

As Raijin flew at his opponent at 16 [Speed], he stuck out one arm and concentrated on solidifying his form as much as he could at the joint, aiming to connect with his opponent at 17 [Strength] and activate his [Tempest Fist • Storm Binding] technique. If successful, ten ribbons of ranton would erupt from his arms and fly to wrap around each of Tenshi's limbs at 20 [Speed] and [Strength], leaving her bound on the ground and unable to move.

If they successfully ensnare the opponent, these ribbons will apply the appropriate Ranton effect based on the user’s [Control], and bind the target’s arms at [Control] strength.
