Kanji Inpan: Ryu Kokyuu Kani seal: Dragon breath
Rank: C-rank Fuuinjutsu
Description: By forming a kanji that combines the seals for "dragon" and "breath" in center of his palm and/or mouth out of katon chakra, Tousha is able to unleash a large stream of searing hot fire from the location the kanji is created. The flames produced by this fuuinjutsu can easily leave anyone struck by them with second or third degree burns. This continuous attack is released when Tousha closes his fists or mouth, breaking the kanji in the process.
Say one thing about Umezawa Tousha, say he was sore.

After two and a half days on non-stop training the last thing the kage wanted was to run outside and start shooting lightning bolts into the air or swinging a sword around. But he also knew that it was his duty to Konoha to get stronger in order to better protect it. But damn it all, his body hurt.

After his morning cup of tea Tousha found himself in a much better mood, which was still below his usual high spirited mood but he would have to live with it. He decided during breakfast that he had been spending too much of his time honing his raiton abilities, in the process he had almost completely neglected his katon techniques. But that was going to change after today, one way or another he would make something catch fire by the end of the day.

So Tousha found himself rummaging through his personal "scroll shed" for the third time in four days. After a few seconds of searching the Hokage found what he had been looking for. When he came into view once more he would be carrying a massive scroll, its boarders lined with several bright and dark colors alike. With a grunt the kage dropped the scroll onto one of the many boulders that lined the lake's shore and set out to find something interesting.

Their are two rules when attempting to perform a kanji technique. Rule number one is never, ever, ever combine two symbols that were entirely unrelated. For example, trying to combine the kanji for "fire" and "frog" would only end in disaster. Rule number two is to take our time when you first attempt drawing the kanji itself. Even the slightest mistake while scribing the symbol could be even more disaterous than breaking rule number one.

After a few minutes of searching Tousha found two kanji that seemed like they would go well together, the kanji for "fire" and "breath." But there was only one way to find out, so after whipping out his trusty steel jitte the kage hopped down from the boulder and kneeled down and stabbed the business end of his defensive weapon into the soft dirt.

Very carefully Tousha outlined the symbol for dragon, a kanji that he was very familiar with. It would be the base for the second seal, the kanji for "breath." This symbol was a tad bit more tricky, but Tousha wasn't a beginner in the art of drawing kanji so he completed the seal with relative ease. Tousha stood up and watched the seal for a moment, waiting to see if simply drawing it on the ground would result in anything whatsoever. Unfortunately for him, the kanji simply sat there like any other old symbol.

So instead of using dirt Tousha decided to use a different medium. The kage closed his eyes and raised his hand parallel to the ground, pointing his open palm towards the center of the lake he was standing near. With a small amount of effort he focused katon energy into his open hand, creating a small flame. He used this flame to outline the marking needed for the kanji, but since it was his first attempt the kage took his time. Drawing symbols in the sand with a jitte was one thing, but making one out of fire was a tad more difficult.

After several moments the kanji was finally complete and without a second thought Tousha flooded the finished symbol with cakra. Immediately he sensed the kanji coming to life, he grabbed his right wrist with his left hand and planted his feet in preparation. The kage felt an intense heat burst to life in the palm of his hand and spread outwards through the air in front of himself. A large stream of flames flew through the air over the lake's surface, causing the water directly below it to begin bubbling and releasing steam into the air.

For a good ten seconds Tousha continued focusing chakra into the kanji in the palm of his hand, just to get a good idea of how long he could keep the onslaught of flames active. When he was satisfied Tousha quickly clenched his fist tightly, breaking the katon seal instantly.

Kanji training

Kanji Inpan: Inferuno [Kanji seal: Inferno]
Rank B-rank Fuuinjutsu
Prerequisites: Kanji Inpan: Ryu Kokyuu
Description: By forming the kanji for "inferno" across the ground using katon chakra, the user of this technique will be able to engulf a five yard radius entirely in searing hot flames. The kanji itself is circular in shape and appears as a very intricate orange pattern on the ground that includes a small hole in the center for the user to stand. Anyone standing in or in the air above (six yards) will immediately be engulfed in these flames, causing second and third degree burns that can prove fatal.
"Dragon breath kanji, check." Tousha said smugly as he lightly blew on his palm, his skin still hot from the jets of flame that had been less than an inch from scalding it. That was the downside to kanji techniques, no one could ever be pretty good at it. People who were pretty good usually ended up catching themselves on fire and burning to death or disappearing for eternity. Or so his father had said.

But Tousha was more than capable of taking his katon kanji techniques to the next level.

So without a second thought the Hokage returned to the large scroll perched atop the large boulder facing the lake's crystal clear water. He extended the scroll a few more feet, revealing hundreds of new, more intricate kanji seals. It took Tousha a few minutes to find a seal that he could picture being useful, but the seal itself was one of the most complex pieces of writing he had ever seen.

This was a huge problem for several reasons. First off, if it was really intricate it would take longer to create in the heat of battle and any kind of delay would be incredibly dangerous. Secondly, if he managed to create the seal and then screwed up very, very bad things would happen. There wasn't a third reason but he was sure another problem would pop up sooner or later.

The kage knew that he wouldn't be able to just glance at the kanji and replicate it as easily as the last technique, this one was going to require a few practice tries. So Tousha dragged the scroll from the boulder and whipped out his jitte. He used the razor sharp tip of the defensive weapon to carefully etch out the kanji's symbol through the moist dirt. It took Tousha a good minute and a half to complete his etching, but as he connected the last two lines the kage took a few cautious steps backwards.

Tousha placed his palm on the ground and flooded the earth with his chakra, focusing it through the dirt and towards the kanji seal about fifteen feet away. He felt as his chakra reached the center of the seal, causing it to shimmer with a bright orange-red color. Then a massive explosion ripped the air throughout the area asunder.

The explosion rocked the ground beneath the Hokage's feet, as well as pushed him backwards with incredible force. Instinctively Tousha went into a crouched position, bending at the knees and placing his right hand supportively on the ground. He watched as his kanji, which did not do what it was supposed to in any way, sent several massive chunks of ground and rock high into the air. Luckily a majority of the debris landed harmlessly in the lake's once calm water, but after all was said and done Tousha found himself relatively unharmed. His clothes were a little dirty and he had a sort of dusty taste in his mouth, but besides that he was good to go for another try.

Kanji training

"And that should do it..." Tousha muttered, standing at the center of his newly formed kanji seal. He had taken over ten minutes to check and re-check the seal itself, careful to make sure that he hadn't missed anything whatsoever. He was confident that every line was exactly where it should be. But confidence didn't make techniques work.

So just as before the kage stepped out of the circle and placed his open palm to the ground. His chakra seeped into the dirt below him and made a beeline for the center of the seal, Tousha winced as it reached its mark.

A stream of orange and red fire leaped from the ground fifteen feet away, forming a perfect circular inferno. Tousha could even feel the intense heat from this far away, he couldn't imagine what it would be like to be trapped inside of that hellhole. But what he could imagine was his opponent trapped inside of those flames, and that thought alone made this technique worthwhile to learn.

But to be able to perform this technique in battle would require him to learn how to create the kanji without spending a few minutes etching the seal into the ground. He would be dead ten times over before he could even say "Alright, now you're gonna get it!"

And the kage had something that just might work in mind.

Tousha returned to the spot where he had drawn the second kanji and whistled, shocked and surprised to see what he found. The ground where the fire had been pouring from the kanji was completely blackened and still smoldering. It looked as if death itself had graced the earth with its presence. That didn't make Tousha feel any better about being at the center of the inferno, but he knew that it had to be done.

So Tousha took a deep breath and sighed, already feeling the soles of his feet starting to grow warmer to the touch. In a burst of light and heat several intersecting lines of orange and red fire tore small paths through the ground that stood in their way. Tousha's brow wrinkled and his eyebrows pulled tightly together as he concentrated on the task of creating a kanji by searing it into the earth with his own chakra. It was an entirely new experience to the kage, but one that came surprisingly easy to him.

His skill in ninjutsu helped more than anything else, it was that skill alone that allowed Tousha to shape the fire into lines with relative ease. And once he was done, the entire seal flashed brightly.

Tousha's right eye slowly peeked open, his hands were placed over his head and his knees were shaking rather badly. But he was pretty content to find that he hadn't been blown up in a massive explosion. But he didn't feel comfortable in the least. He found himself in the center of a raging ring of fire, a place that wasn't very cool in the least.

In fact, the heat was so intense that Tousha could only put up with it for about eight seconds. After he released his chakra from the seal the kage fell to his knees, coughing violently before taking very deep breaths. The fire had eaten up nearly every bit of oxygen around the kage as it burned. He realized then that this technique, if used excessively, would do more harm than good.

He was going to have to be more careful next time, otherwise he was going to end up dying for nothing.
